Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Question: So I was reading the hockey olympics page, and came across the rules. Here's what they say:

Overtime rules: If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 4-on-4, sudden-death overtime period will be played (five-minute OT in preliminary round, 10-minute OT in playoff round and 20-minute OT in gold-medal game). If the game is not decided in overtime, it will go to a shootout.

Does this mean that the medal rounds can be determined by a SHOOTOUT?

I would doubt it/ hope not. That would just be asinine.

I guess maybe you are too young to remember Peter Forbserg scoring the gold medal winning goal in a shootout in 1994 against Corey Hirsch. :)

That's how Sweden won the gold in Lillehammer.

Of course it can. Always has been that way.

AMEN!!!!
Though, I would give ski jumping a pass.

• Downhill skiing: Fastest one to the bottom wins. A sport.
• Ski jumping: Whoever jumps the farthest wins, but there are style points involved. Anything that involves style points is not a sport.
Surprisingly, not a sport.
• Cross-country skiing: First one to the Finnish line wins. A sport.
• Freestyle skiing: Includes subjectively judged events. Not a sport.
• Ice hockey: Objective scoring. Missing teeth. A sport.
• Ice dancing: You're kidding, right?
• Curling: Frozen shuffleboard with brooms, objectively scored. Shockingly, a sport (though possibly more of a game).
• Luge: Fastest one to the bottom wins. A sport.
• Bobsled: See luge.
• Speedskating: Fastest one wins. A sport.
• Biathlon: Skiing and shooting while resisting shooting the guy in front of you. A sport -- and one that would be huge in Texas,
where I live, if we had more snow.

He's wrong about freestyle skiing. It's still partly about speed and all that moguls training takes a toll on your knee/hip joints. It's more legit than ski jumping.

I'm too young clearly. Wow. That's so... stupid. Honestly, hockey games of that magnitude should NOT be decided by a skills competition. Hockey is a team sport. Let the teams decide the winner, not one shooter and a goalie.

Why did the Norwiegians send their women's team to play the Canadian Men? The Norwiegians didn't even try to check anyone, they just played the role of practice cones.

Did you only watch the third period? I saw numerous good hits delevered by Norwegians. They didn't look intimidated by the Canadians at all.

Doing construction work all day takes a toll on your back and fingers. Yet I don't see house-building as a sport, either.

Objective scoring (most points, fastest time, least number of shots, etc.) is pretty much the main criteria in my mind for sport/not-a-sport. Beyond that, it cannot be played by patrons of a bar or casino, taking cards, darts, and pool out. Finally, there must be some physical exertion, so board games like chess are done, too.

Boxing's a tough one to call because a knock-out is clearly an objective outcome, but the judge's scoring is subjective. The goal is always a knock-out, but more fights ultimately go to the cards. So, I don't know how to call that one.

If I'm feeling really persnickity, I also add rule 4: the majority of work must be done by a living being, thereby keeping horse racing a sport but eliminating NASCAR.

Technically, the judges are supposed to use the statistics (boxer X landed y punches) but I'm not sure how much they do. It's also up to a judge to interpret the different types of punches...jab, upper-cut, round-house, etc. and what % of each actually landed.

Golf is like boxing for me and that it operates in a gray area. I'm not sure if the level of physical exertion required (especially for the Cart driving crowd), really qualifies. When You can drink a six pack while playing, well thats tough to dignify. I don't think I've ever played hockey, soccer or basketball, and grabbed a cool one when I was subbed out.

When did you move?

Must be a long commute for the Rat to STA.

Re: Part II of the XXIst Winter Olympiad....and NBC still sucks.

Sounds to me like you've never really played hockey.

I've done a beer before (no more than that or I feel like puking on the bench), and certainly beer after, but I don't think I've ever consumed alcohol on the bench.
