Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

As a #1 Seed in the SUNYAC they are 1 for 6 in since 2003-2004
They are 3 for 6 in the Pathfinder and 0 for 2 in other tournaments....

If you can't win the "little" ones how do you win the "big" one?? Like I said, Oswego (as the record has shown) does not do well in pressure (tournament) games.... 4 Championships out of 14chances...and thats not counting the 3 other times they lost in the SUNYAC Finals as the #2 seed.

Recruits are starting to notice......
......your obvious bias. You have great insight that turns into NFL fan boy goon dum when it comes to Oswego. Like I said ....exactly. We know how you feel.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

OK, here's how this whol Cardinals-Lakers thing began (cue the wavy screen)....Way back in '80, Herb Hammond brought his overmatched Lakers in to our barn and spanked us thus winning the first SUNYAC title. The basic reason for the dislike for each other was because the majority of our players were french-speaking Quebecers and Herb was using kids from Ontario and Western NY>.

Over that summer, Hammond surprised everyone and bolted for the open Plattsburgh coaching position. Needless to say, our trips to Oswego turned in to ugly, bitter affairs with fans attacking us on the bench, in the hall and around the bus. At that time, both teams had players who still lead many offensive categories and reside in their respective Hall of Fame's (Lair, Flynn, Pratt, Kimura, D'Anjou, Strack, etc). Our comeback in the final game of 1981 propelled us to the 1st of many NCAA appearances (losing in the final to Lowell 5-4). The players changed out but the hard feelings remained thru the '80's. Laker fans began throwing bagels at our goalies after the first goal of the game while our fans used the lime green tennis balls (in tribute to the grotesque uniforms sported by the Lakers).

The game changed and so did the rivalry. Nowadays, the games are clean, fast hockey. It's a game that every player who ever suited up for either team gets up for more than any other. Its why you play college hockey. In recent years, I even found myself pulling for the Lakers if the Cards were eliminated!!

I was way before the 80s, before most of the SUNYAC played hockey NCAA but why was it bagels? I mean there must have been some octopuses around

Recruits are starting to notice......

Recruits notice week after week the same three teams that have dominated the rankings and the Frozen Fours for the last five years. Recruits care every bit as much playing for a team that is ranked number one, makes it to the Frozen Four, and who wins the league's regular season title as they do about winning the conference tourney. You hang your hat on that because the last five years Oz has dominated Platty in the other three areas. The recruits also notice 5-0-1.

From my understanding, they were celebrating the fact that in the previous game, they'd recorded their first shutout against Plattsburgh since the advent of the tennis ball tradition. Quite a feat to celebrate, considering Plattsburgh's still only been shut out 11 times by DIII competition, twice by DI opponents, once by a CIS school, and once by the US18 team.

My question on that theory is: when did the bagel tradition start? Because, looking at the Plattsburgh Medua Guide from last season, February '98 is the first time I see that Oswego shut out Plattsburgh (Feb '98 and Feb '12, with Plattsburgh shutting out Oswego in Nov '98 and Feb '00)

Don't forget about the 3-2 win at the CC last march that copped the Birds another conference tourney. Your sampling of the last few years is rather small. In NO decade have Oswego had a winning record against Plattsburgh and, in fact, have been totally dominated during much of that span. I believe the All-time series is 75-40 or something like that. So let's be fair when you use "dominated", OK?
That said, Oswego has been a great program for a long time as has Plattsburgh, Norwich, Middlebury, Elmira and recently St. Norbert. We will take ANY road to the NCAA's and have used various roads to get their MANY more times than the Lakers. And if the ultimate prize is winning the whole darn thing,,...we have you 3 to 1....good night!!

Sloppy game tonight. Referee's were calling everything!! That was a lot of penalty minutes for a game that wasn't chippy at all. Buff State was fast, and won many puck battles, they are a good looking gritty team.

There is no doubt the Cards are way ahead of the Lakers in terms of all time history. However, the comment was made in regards to what current recruits notice. I do not think recruits today care about anything that happened more than a few years ago. The Championship banners at Platty are quite impressive, but Oz has enough Final Four banners from the last 10 years that would make any recruit take notice. Having been a part of the rivalry in the early 90's, when wins against the Cards were very few and very far between, I am well aware Platty has owned the SUNY, but ask any Laker or Platty player from the last five years, and any recruit who is considering either school and they will tell you there is little or no difference between the two.

Just thinking, at no time does a team's "Class" credibility last more than 4 years, once the Seniors go that's it. Every new class lasts~4 years so the run for a championship can only look back on the last 4 years, and not beyond that, unless you have former players coaching. So a sampling of 4-6 years can be quite correct, The tradition ghosts will give you maybe a game a season and a recruit per season.
Tradition is nice but when it comes down to the end of the season it is "What have you done for me lately?" With his record, why when the Birds are having a bad time do we hear fire Emery or the same thing with Gosek with the Lakers?

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

Its a long season. Anything can happen. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Aww, screw that - Puck Flattsburgh 12-1-12!!!:D I hope that both teams are healthy and they have fun out there...a great rivalry that produces great games...

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

Bob Emery and Ed Gosek will stay at their current jobs until they don't want to anymore. Crackpots who call for their jobs periodically have nothing else to bring to this forum. What's interesting is the contrast in their coaching styles. Emery stresses defense first and will pass on a kid who lights it up and plays no defense. He also is reluctant to take "somebody else's problem" (Some transfers). Gosek seems to like the snipers more and allows for more creativity. He'll outscore most teams, but has improved the defense over his tenure. They've not had the goaltending some years, but they're probably more exciting. But when they play, it's usually a great game decided by special teams.

I do believe that you mean 2 to 1 as 1987 was vacated by the NCAA.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

No, I meant 3 to 1. Who cares what a suit at the NCAA have to say? Fair and square, the game was played and won.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

Oswego had some really bad moments and a players, Brown, Rodrigues, Moodie and Josepher pretty much carried them to the win. Their penalty kill was abysmal all night long and the power play wasn't a whole lot better. This pattern of not matching the other teams intensity early on in Friday night games needs to stop because eventually a couple of these teams aren't going to let them off the hook. Can't complain too much, it's two points and I am sure they will learn some things from the film to help them going forward.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

#1 in the country is nice (doesn't mean anything), but not as nice as having 1st place in the conference (does mean something)!

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

Don't know if I would call their penalty kill abysmal as it was exhausted. I believe two of the goals came when they were down 5x3 and the third they just fought off a 5x3 and were still down a man. Just too many penalties, some not smart and some by an official who seemed to be being payed by how many whistles he blew. But you have to be smarter than this... if you have a ref making calls like that you have to adjust. Good thing about this team, you know they have the firepower to overcome a bad game, just don't make it a habit.

"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself...and ourselves." Laker Hockey Fan, November 17, 2012:D

Yes, they are talented...yes, they seem to be able to score when they need (want) to...yes, they are led by 14 grown men who have been to the big dance the last 3 years...Yes, Yes, Yes!

Bottom line - if this team doesn't play the game for 60 minutes, adapt to the whistles working that night or forget the team first concept, then Laker fans on this board will spend March to Ocober 2013 whining, crying and *****ing about woulda, coulda and shoulda... :(:(:(

Friday and Buffalo State is in the books...Tonight it's Freddy's turn...a break to give thanks, then WHITEOUT (Potty & Platty) WEEKEND, a visit by Utica and a trip to Hobart...

The morning of Sunday, December 9th will be a good time to reflect, assess and, perhaps, peek into the future....:D
