Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

I reached out to several people who would/should know - and it was the first they heard of it.... It's blowing up all over social media, so I suspect there may be some new/additional information forthcoming. My quick read - there are no winners here.
The article is defending the student
there just seems to be more to this,
as written the school is so wrong in this

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

I didn't feel Friday's game was all that well played by either team. The fact that Morrisville definitely doesn't freeze their pucks really hurt Oswego's skill game. The Stangs have pretty much no discipline and their penalty kill is terrible which adds up to their record so far. Brown's goal was an absolute bomb but it took three attempts for him to load it up, everyone in the place except for Morrisville's players seemed to know it was coming.

Oswego was able to find the back of the net five times which is great and only giving up one goal again is nice but they had a couple of really bad breakdowns that Morrisville couldn't capitalize on or things might have been different. It is two points against a team that has been able to steal some points in the last few seasons so I guess I can't complain too much.

The article is defending the kid because they are the group that came to his defense. This article makes a little more sense.

What it seems to me (and full disclosure: I am a college employee, but know nothing of the situation) is the kid screwed up. He misrepresented himself by saying he worked in the Public Affairs office rather than saying he was a student working on an assignment. He never should have done that and should have been disciplined in some way. But it seems as though someone complained (perhaps one of the coaches who received an email) and some administrator really went too far. The dishonesty charge? Ok. But citing the disruptive behavior charge? That seemed overboard. But as others have said, there may be more information that will come out. Bottom line? No one looks good here.

Isn't that the truth. The Aussie will be under the gun of SUNY Oswego's monitoring, but some much larger media ordinance is sighted in on the school itself now. Wonderful job done to all parties involved, now give yourselves a round of applause...:rolleyes:

Re: Cluster

Re: Cluster

on a hockey note we have a tough Buff st team coming in fri, would have had a closer game with Platty but they gave up 3 pp goals in 1 minute with a 5 minute penalty,,,,the bengals have been the most improved team in the SUNYAC and beat platty last yr and gave us fits for sure, they play a gritty style and will bang it out should be a great game..

The statement below was distributed via campus wide email yesterday afternoon - the bold emphasis of the last paragraph is mine.

In response to a recent news article, I am writing to the college
community to assure you that SUNY Oswego remains the institution of
integrity that you have always known.

The principles of free speech and expression are fundamental to an
open society. The building blocks of learning are based on the quest
for information and analysis in the context of open inquiry and
skepticism. SUNY Oswego honors the First Amendment and has vigilantly
undertaken to protect students, faculty, staff and others against
suppression of First Amendment rights.

In instances where charges are brought against a student, student
judicial hearings allow for the perspective and explanations of the
student who is charged to be heard and the issues to be sorted out in
a process that incorporates an advocate for the student and
deliberation by a blend of students, faculty and staff. The charges
reviewed by the hearing panel in this case did not relate to speech,
and the finding specifically addressed a violation of the college code
not related to speech.

There are always lessons to be learned. We are open to criticism with
the goal of increasing our understanding and assuring that we apply
our policies in a manner consistent with our beliefs and values,
especially with regard to free speech and free expression. We are in
the process of assessing our practices and clarifying guidelines.
Moving forward, we have assigned this matter to a group of faculty,
students and staff to propose how that might be done.

Deborah F. Stanley
President

The process in place worked - the wording of the form letter issued under President Stanley's signature did not - the student was never evicted...the hearing was conducted in a timely fashion...the ultimate punishment fit the crime. The fact a group of students, faculty and staff are reviewing policies, guidelines and communications so improvements can be made is a good thing.

In other news - DROP THAT PUCK!!!:D:cool::p

Note to Laker fans: A quick look at the stats shows exactly 3 goals scored by non-seniors in the Oswego lineup!!! Conversely, the Cards have only 2 of their 23 goals scored BY seniors. Does Gosek have another giant recruiting year planned, or do we return to Cardinal domination of the Lakers???? Just sayin'.

Good players tend to gravitate to teams where roster spots are open. Oswego is going to have plenty of those open next year. With that said I think they need to win a couple of trophies this year meaning the Pathfinder and one or both of the SUNYAC and National Title. Players know they can go to Norwich, St. Norbert and Plattsburgh and win league and National Title's, they can't say the same about Oswego. If they can take home some hardware this year it will make Eddie's job of replacing their top talent a lot easier.

Norwich is the same boat.

19 goals....six of which have been scored by non-seniors.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

I think there's a fine line between over-recruiting and "stocking up" as any successful coach will tell you. Amazing class Gosek brought in 4 years ago, augmented with the odd D-I transfer. A good mix of snipers and role players. Same thing in Norwich.
The Cards have been trying to get by with smallish, quick guys with questionable closing skills, not the problem anymore. At least 5 or 6 high-end forwards and a couple of sturdy DMen. Certainly the Cards will thin out at the semester (Curry??), which helps solve the weekly dilema on who gets on the bus.
Can Whitelaw, Moodie, Rodrgues, et al finish off their careers with some meaningful hardware?? Could be a while if this group doesn't get it done this year.

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

Laker seniors are on a mission...to get to the big dance all four years and win the last one...as long as they win their final game of the season, no one will remember or care if they won the Pathfinder or the SUNYAC...

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-2013....No Slogans, Just Hockey

I think a huge advantage for this year's recruiting is the fact the playing time is wide open for next. Many players at the "non-powerhouse" schools are there because they don't want to have to wait their turn trying to beat out an established NCAA player. Brockport's Freshman goalie Lockhurst is a great example of a player who I think would compete for a starting job at a "powerhouse" school and is somewhat guaranted an immediate starter by attending Brockport. Oswego's class next year will be loaded with studs who would normally have gone to some of the schools mentioned in posts prior to this due to the open roster. And that would be reloading year, not a rebuilding year.;)

With little to no FA...good luck with that.......

There's a lot of pressure on OSU this year, especially the SR class...and we all know how they handle pressure.

But how much will the loss of the $12K-per-year International Student Aid Grant effect how many Canadians Oswego will be able to pull in?

The success, the rink, and the location will certainly still be a solid sell...But in the end, money talks and instead of paying "X" per year to go to Oswego now hockey players will have to pat "X+12K more" which might put the money it costs to attend closer to private schools.

Clearly, you have yet to send a kid to college - aprox annual retail price - Oswego "out of state:" $15,000....Elmira $49.950....Norwich $47,000....St Norbert $39,000...Middlebury $55,550:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
