Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close 1st

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

As a totally neutral observer at today's game, I must say I was super impressed with the Lakers. In fact, I wondered to myself how on earth did my Cardinals ever beat this team once much less two times. I thought the first period was pretty even with maybe a slight edge to Norwich. The early goal did not fluster Oswego. They also answered the second Norwich goal without flinching. But the 3rd period was an absolute clinic. Pinpoint passing, great team defense, speed to burn and superb goaltending.

Whitelaw IMO is in a class by himself. He schooled Norwich's tough D-men all afternoon and his passing is amazing. Hare made the saves he needed to make. The Lakers are certainly on a roll. The SUNYAC is proud now finish the job!

Faceoffs aren't always important. The percentages will revert back to the mean, which is around 50%. I bet they improve tomorrow!

Norwich is a very very good team, but yeah the Lakers were just that good today. Honestly, in all the years I've been watching the Lakers (admittedly only a few years) I have never seen the Lakers playing better than they have played these last few games. Sure they clean up against low-quality teams all the time, but the level of skill I'm seeing them display against very good teams (and they just keep getting better) is unbelievable. They're a juggernaut right now.

How about the stick skills on Norwich's defenseman? Best I've seen this year! That was a good team!

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

I just watched Mike McShane on the local news saying he thought Norwich played good for about 50 minutes. He would know, but I've seen Norwich look better than they did today. Lots of defensive collapses in the 3rd period and BINGO!! it's too late against the most opportunistic team in DIII hockey.

Question: Not to pile on UC, but how do we view a finish to a season with one win in their last 4 games?

Utica learned the NCAA Tournament = ? One of the best D-III teams I've ever seen was RIT's '90-91 undefeated team which was "humbled" by the Cards in the finals?

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

Thank you Admiral for your post. Jon Whitelaw's skill was highly evident this year, especially after he went out with a very painful high ankle sprain early in the season. We missed his play, we had to change lines constantly to find the right chemistry. After Jon came back he, like many good athletes continue to play at less than 100 percent.
The Lakers have peaked at the right time. They are painting a picture on how to overcome adversity to win. Not many writers have given much hope for this team recently, and rightfully so after the beat down in Utica. But as we all have seen this is a group of mostly eexperienced seniors and great under classman that risen up.

I suppose we will be hearing from OZ fans on the ground in LP once the hangovers wear off.....

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

First let me say that I was very impressed with the speed of many of the Norwich players for they were faster that most or our players and that is something I have not seen all season and I have seen many of the Lakers games. The passing skills were also very impressive for Norwich. For me there were 3 aspects of the game that separated the teams.
1: The coomposure of the heavily leaden senior team of the Lakers, they never lost their composure.
2: Last nights game was the best effort of forechecking and back checking for the entire year.
3: The Lakers did all the little nitty gritty things to win, ie Singletons goal was just a pure hustle and a never give up effort.
If the Lakers can duplicate this effort they will come away with thier second Championship.

Close but 00-01....

What was even more impressive was the route they took to get there...

Losing 8-2 to RIT in Jan
After crushing through Geneseo, needed a Sunday game to beat Potsdam in the SUNYAC Finals
Going TO Middlebury just a year after they ended Middlebury's streak and winning both Quarterfinals
games (yes when we actually played a TWO game series)
Going into RIT and facing arguably the 2nd best team in UWS who was on a 23-game long unbeaten streak, beat them. Sundberg 50 saves on 53 shots. Ziemski (UWS) 4 goals on 17 shots including giving up 3 goals on Plattsburgh's only 3 shots in the first (the sun was in my eyes)
And then capping it off with a dominating 6-2 win over undefeated RIT at home..

Re: Oswego State Laker Hockey 2012-13...Part 2..Because Norwich's thread didn't close

I was hearing some Oswego fans at the game last night saying how they'd rather face off against Utica than Wisconsin because Utica is the better team. After last night's smackdown, I think Wisconsin very much proved themselves the better team. I'm glad that Oswego will be playing Wisconsin, because I want to win the championship playing the toughest teams, not the easiest teams.

I don't think Coach Loen was joking in his presser that he would be calling St. Norbert's head coach Tim Coghlin. I know I would.

It was a very surgical win for the Blugolds. I check here, a shot there, and before you know it, you were in too deep a hole.

this will be a great game for sure,Oswego needs to play the same game last night, stay out of the box, and keep the turnovers to a minimum,...They really have to keep an eye on Singer he is all over the place...Eau Claire seems to remind me on St Norb, fast forcheck, top goalie, crowd the net and block shots, several forwards that grind and play hard hockey, this yr Oswego seems to be playing that type of hockey as well, they have been finishing their checks and crashing the net.......Cant wait
