OSWEGO — They clobbered Fredonia 10-2 two weeks ago. Now, the Oswego State Lakers hope to beat the Devil out of Fredonia again at 7 p.m. Saturday in a SUNY Athletic Conference hockey semifinal game at Campus Center Ice Arena.
The top-ranked Lakers (21-2-2) swept the season series from Fredonia, also earning a 4-1 road win in November.
Still, Coach Ed Gosek’s team knows what happened a season ago. Fredonia came to the Campus Center and stunned the Lakers 2-1 in overtime in the SUNYAC semifinals.
“I wouldn’t say revenge is a factor,” Gosek said.
“We could use it as a reminder that come playoff time, it’s a new season. They’re a team that’s won a playoff game. We have to be ready to execute our game plan and play to our potential.”
Fifth-seeded Fredonia (12-10-3) advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 triumph at fourth-seeded Geneseo on Wednesday. The Devils outshot the Knights 30-21 and got two goals from Andrew Christ and 20 saves from sophomore goalie Mark Friesen.
Friesen has a 12-8-2 record with a 2.59 goals-against average and a save percentage of .918.
Offensively, the leaders for the Devils are senior Bryan Ross (10 goals, 26 assists) and juniors Mike Muhs (8-13) and Mat Hehr (8-12).
Gosek said he expects to see a much different Fredonia team than the one that got blown out of the Campus Center two weeks ago.
“They certainly have something to prove, the way that game turned out,” Gosek said. “Ross is a solid player. When you give him an opportunity around the net, he can finish. Their strength is being opportunistic. They’re not going to take a lot of extra chances.”
Fredonia will play sound defensively and try to force the Lakers into turnovers, Gosek said.
The Lakers are in the midst of their best stretch of hockey this season. They have won 11 games in a row, including back-to-back 3-0 shutouts of Plattsburgh and Potsdam to close out the season.
“When we’re focused on the task at hand, unselfish, and playing as a team, it’s a fun group to watch and coach,” Gosek said. “The confidence our team has is they know when we’re staying disciplined, working hard, and are unselfish, we’re a pretty good team.”
Junior goalie Andrew Hare (18-2-2, 1.65 goals-against average, .934 save percentage) has been the backbone of Oswego State’s stellar defense.
“He’s tracked the puck well and has controlled rebounds,” Gosek said. “The defense hasn’t given teams a lot of second or third opportunities. They have kept teams to the outside. And our forwards have worked hard to get back and support our defense.”
Junior defensemen Zack Josepher and Taylor Farris earned all-conference recognition, and are among a deep and solid blue-line corps for Oswego State.
Up front, Oswego State has plenty of firepower, led by first-team all-conference player Jon Whitelaw (17-20). Other top scorers for the Lakers are juniors Paul Rodrigues (11-22), and Luke Moodie (14-17), along with senior Ian Boots (8-15).
The Lakers have converted on 35-of-137 power-play chances, a 25.5 percent clip. They have killed off 113-of-129 penalties, 87.6 percent.
While Oswego State dominated the SUNYAC regular season, it must turn up the intensity for the playoffs.
“Now, the second season starts. This is when the stakes rise,” Gosek said.
Other semifinal
In Saturday’s other SUNYAC semifinal game, second-seeded Plattsburgh (17-4-4) will host third-seeded Buffalo State (13-11-2).
Those teams split their season series.
Gosek declined to predict a winner.
“For some reason, Buffalo State matches up well with Plattsburgh,” he said. “They are two good teams. Both have offensive firepower and both have good goaltending. It’s a tough one to call.”
The SUNYAC championship game will be at 7 p.m. March 3 at the site of the highest-remaining seed.
