Open Wheel Racing 2021, anyone there to watch?

Sato just threw away this race. Should get an extra penalty for running over a hose...

Although Schwartzman just said "hold my beer".

Good finish- I was hoping that O'Ward would have had a better chance, but Palau made the fuel savings strategy work- and made a great pass for the lead.

He would have needed a red flag. An SC would have still cost him 10 seconds, which he didn't have, except to Piastri.

Again, don't count tire changes under a red flag, and all of this issue goes away. Of all the "lucky stops"- that's the worst one.
Watching the F2 race (where in the feature race, there is a mandatory pit stop) they talked about how the rule is written differently than in F1.

In F2, the rule says you have to perform a pit stop (and it only counts after lap 6).

In F1, the rule says you have to use two sets of tires. (Note, nothing about a pit stop.)

There's the solution. Just write the rule the way F2 writes it.

Nice run to end it at least. Not sure what Ericsson was thinking leaving the door open with 14 left. Have to think he was plain surprised.
From what Ericsson said, he thought there was no way Palou was going to pass him at that point in the race (apparently, Ericsson bobbled, which gave Palou the opportunity).

As it turned out, Ericsson got a penalty for a rule infringement. So it turned out better that the official winner got to celebrate. (other Andretti cars got penalized, too- so Penske isn't the only cheater)

Happened to wake up early and get to see P1 at Spain, where the new front wing rules are being enforced.

And the most important thing I've heard so far, McLaren did NOT bring a new wing. They have been using this one before. I really appreciate how Horner is so fixated on McLaren and not his own team.

According to Alex Brundle (on F1 TV), McLaren added a reinforcing bit on the end of the front wing to strengthen it from flexing. Whether they ran that type of wing before, I don't know.

I always felt this flexi wing deal was much ado about nothing. Remember last year when they were all complaining of McLaren's flexible wings and mini-DRS. McLaren made changes right away, and one of their top executives said this isn't why we're good. Even alluding to the idea that they like everyone fixated on it because it keeps them from looking at what the real advantage McLaren has, the old magician slight of hand.

Well, then comes the start of this year, and everyone finally realized the huge design advantage McLaren has is their whole rear brakes/wheels/tires cooling system. And it is that which is allowing such amazing race distance pace. Then of course, everyone complained about it, coming up with crazy "water in the tires" conspiracies. Yet, despite the FIA constantly looking at the systems with a fine toothed comb, they keep declaring it legal.

But because the flexi wing momentum was in full force, the FIA had to continue to go along with the promised rule changes in Spain. But it was all a red herring and McLaren is laughing all the way to the podium. (The-Race even had an article saying this change may hurt Red Bull and Ferrari the most, which really cracked me up.)

Stroll missing today's race for an injury, so only 19 out there. Allegedly after throwing a tantrum in the garage and hurting his wrist after hitting something.

My question: Isn't this the point of the reserve driver? Or do they have to participate in qualifying to race?

I think Max knows he’s cooked and is lashing out. He can’t keep up with Mercedes in any of their forms anymore, and now’s there’s a Ferrari getting in front of him regularly too.

Lewis had more of a reason to be mad- he should have had a car equal to Charles, but it was so bad he got passed by a Sauber. Max just reestablished his real identity.

To anyone who lives near Watkins Glen, I have two free tickets to the Six Hours of the Glen on June 20-22. Turns out I got asked to drive the pace car for the vintage event at Mid-Ohio that weekend (as well as the vintage event at Indy this weekend). So, if you want them, they are yours. Contact me via DM.

They are digital tickets (via TicketMaster), so very easy to transfer them to someone else.
