Open Wheel Racing 2021, anyone there to watch?

I don't think Max got close enought to force Horner's hand. So, we'll never know...

It was hinted at during one of the radio messages. Checo was told to keep it somewhere around 32.6 + .4, Checo asked where Max was and they said 32.2 so Checo asked why he doesn't just run at Max's pace and they told him just keep going.

On the other hand, Max asked what the fastest lap was, RB told him they aren't concerned about that, but Max said he is. Then goes all out on the final lap to get the extra point.

NASCAR ending to an F1 race. Who could have figured that given a grid restart they would be that aggressive? What a mess.

Forgot to record the live race so recorded a replay, but it goes from a red flag at lap 56 to the rolling finish at lap 58 after commercial breaks. Apparently I missed a lot?

Also like ESPN listing this with zero context as the closest finish since the early 2000s when it’s not like Hamilton could’ve overtaken anyway.

Yup. Kind of an expected chaotic finish- they tried to restart at lap 56, but there was carnage at the first turn, so had to revert back to that start to finish under the safety car. Except that neither Alpine finished because they crashed (heavily) each other out, and Sainz got a questionable 5 second penalty for starting it all- moving him from 4th to 12th.

I really don't understand why racing has to finish under green. Makes no sense. The original red could have been dealt with via VSC or SC, but they want to have race finish drama even if it's made up. Max had a 10 second lead, it was hardly going to be interesting.

The whole race was a hot mess. This was the first time Dr. Mrs. & I were watching when everything fell apart.

Alpine needs to get right with the Lawd, they really got f-cked.

Are there specific protocols on when to start from the grid versus a rolling start after a red?

For a sport with so many specific regulations and points of emphasis on seemingly trivial things, once it comes to race day there are a lot of decisions that appear to be completely random.

Was it questionable? It sure looked like his fault.

The worst part was it broke Tsunoda's streak of 11th place finishes.

I think so. If that had happened in the middle of the race, and was just an aggressive pass, sure, he would be at fault. But it was a grid (re)start, so all of the cars were really bunched together. And everyone is scrambling for position- just like the start of the race. I think that would have been ok on lap 1, and it was similar to something that did happen on lap 1.

It's a whole lot less clear than other situations.

No idea. Sure seems pretty random. And given where the car was, why was it even a red flag? Why can't a race finish under a SC? It was going to be an anticlimactic ending anyway, given the gaps.

Where the hell was Leclerc?

indyar in Texas was pretty amazing! Newgarden with the win.

Man, I'm pretty frustrated with Indycar. I have no idea when a race will be on, and missed the whole thing, again. It's been a few seasons since I watched most of the season, and then the races became pretty random and barely talked about. IIRC, last season I only watched the 500, as it is pretty easy to predict when it's on and to search for it. This season, I've not even seen a replay of a race, let alone an Indycar on a track.

In contrast, NBC's former sport is easy to find- the NHL on both ESPN and TNT is consistent enough to find them really easily. I've watched more hockey this season than I have in many, many years.

What time did the race even start?

Fair. I'm actually surprised there isn't a 9-car pileup on the first turn in every Grand Prix.

One of the big reasons MLS went with Apple: consistent start times for all games. Unsurprising that NBC is jerking IndyCar around and not advertising.

Started at 11est. I agree though, INDYCAR marketing is awful and NBC controls their start times and puts what I consider a very important race for them (Toronto) on their stupid peacock app only. It’s ludicrous.
