Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

In a very off topic, but totally on spririt, update- WolverineTrumpet's boyfriend (who I think does lurk these boards) had a great weekend down in Mid-Ohio running in the Skip Barber Pro Miata series- ignore the fact that he started 3/4 and finished 2/4, the SB cars start at the back of the Playboy Series cars, so he started 22 overall, and finished 14th!! That's a lot of faster cars to pass! Nicely done!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

After my disappointment of realizing that Yost will be inaccessible when I'm in town on the 4th of July, I realized that I'll be in Toronto on the 6th, which is Free Friday at Honda Indy Toronto! I haven't been to an IndyCar event in years (went to Milwaukee a few times in the mid '90's and that situation sounds sad, sad, sad; plus went to Michigan a couple times), but have never been on any day but race-day. The event schedule isn't updated on the race website yet, sooo, what should I expect to be able to see? Practice? Qualifying? Not much? Thanks, and I think I'm as excited about seeing the new IndyCars as I am about the rest of my baseball park trip...

sad, sad, sad.

this may be the last milwaukee open wheel race. I'm hearing just north of 13,000 sold thusfar. the week of the race. jesus christ. just no advertising like they used to do in the 80's and 90's. nothing at brookfield square, no billboards. which very likely means absolutely no advertising in chicago.

Andretti has very much disappointed here.

I think you need to give Andretti some slack here as his company didn't exactly plan promote this race until late in the planning season. With that being said, his promotion company still needs to do an good job or everyone will lose money. However, if there are so many great race fans up in that area as I keep reading about (on other forums) then it should not be a problem to sell out given the cheap ticket prices. If this race doesn't draw well then Indycar needs to move on to other venues (if they can find them).

That is impressive!

There should be at least one round of practice for Indycar on Friday, plus some practice and maybe qualifying for the support races.

Watched both of the races this past weekend and thought both were excellent. I was pleasantly surprised by the Texas race. It's so good to see drivers actually have to drive the car on an oval and not just hold it to the floor.

The F1 race was very good too. Good mix of strategy and passing to mix up the order. It's amazing how far F2012 has come this season. On Sunday the car genuinely had pace to fight for a win.

So, I just read that the China Indycar race has been cancelled. You have to wonder how much longer the BoT in Indy are going to keep supporting Bernard with these kind of gaffs continually happening. I understand they all are not his fault but he's at the top and the one to be held responsible. Again, I keep thinking that for every good thing that happens for Indycar there is a bad thing right around the corner that happens.

Word is that Izod's contract states that there must be a 16 race schedule minimum, so if this is true then I wonder where the replacement race is going to come from..... my guess is the either they will tag along on a Grand-Am or ALMS race somewhere or run the road course at Indy. Looking at the other series schedules, I personally like Watkins Glen with the Grand-Am series on 8/12 since I will already be there. :) However, my thought is that it will be Indy as that way is Indycar has total control over the race and it might make the logistics easier (ticket sales, team's HQ are close, etc.)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

(they are going with mega low downforce to avoid the pack racing)

They had the rear wings set to generate lift.

(Which says a lot about the aerodynamic design of the rest of the car.)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I will watch the start and then the end for sure. I will probably catch some of it during other times as my wife allows. ;)

I managed to watch most of it last year, though much was on fast forward. I'm very curious to see how the Delta Wing does in its class.

100% sure that it will finish first in it's class.

And I'm also 100% sure that it will finish last in it's class.

It's running on it's own. Target speed was midpack for P2. but it's just an experiment in low downforce/small displacement race cars.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

the problem w/Milwaukee Mile and lousy promotion is not entire Andretti's fault of course due to how late he came into the game.

that said, this race while a great quality of life aspect for Milwaukee, was always supported a TON by people in Illinois and Minnesota. I remember in the 80's and early 90's seeing tons of Illinois plates, and Minnesota, and many others from PA, MI, IN, and Canada. that support from out-of-state is crucial but if Chicagoans don't know the ****ed race is actually happening they won't be here.

I expect 15,000 here on saturday. lousy, but made even worse considering a 4-5th level stock-car event happened here wednesday at 9pm and drew 12,000. ugh.

just ugh.

You do realize that 8/12 is the NASCAR weekend at Watkins Glen...?

No, I don't follow NASCAR at all. I just have a buddy of mine ask if I wanted to go with him to see the Grand-Am race as he had an extra ticket.

I lived outside Chicago and in Minnesota in that timeframe and went to the Mile several times. Good to know Indy is back - maybe I'll try to make the race if they have it again next year. I was busy today, but will watch the replay on ESPN3 later.

awesome!

I was at the race today. pretty decent race overall and the early crowd estimates are 18,000-20,000 in the stands (not sure how many in the in-field but certainly moreso than last year)

Andretti announced @ the race that yes it will be back next year and tickets go on-sale tomorrow!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Wow, what an end to the race! I didn't think that Wilson had a chance when he held on for a late pit, and then not pitting under Yellow. But then they reported that the leaders were out of sticker tires, and he had one more set.

Rahal ALMOST had that, but he admitted messing up- running high, and touching the wall. Basically a miracle that he finished, let alone second.

But major congratulations to Justin Wilson!!!!! That was something.

Great to hear the drivers just loving the driving with so low downforce. Unlike other series where they whine about not being able to run WOT all the way around. They all totally understand that 1- driving is better than holding on, and 2- keeping the car under you for the entire stint is key. So cool that they all really like driving like that!!!!!

I just got to watch Texas, and it was great to see the drivers have to actually drive the car and manage the tyres. I didn't like how some drivers called the handling "scary". Grow some bigger balls or go drive in a different series.

Montreal....awesome race.

Milwaukee....didn't get to see it, I was travelling.

Rumor has it that Elkhart Lake may replace China, it fits in Elkhart's schedule. And yes WI can support 2 open wheel races. Back in the Cart hay days Milwaukee was packed and so was Elkhart Lake. Elkhart Lake was kind of considered a "home" race for IL people, they gave away Chicago Tribunes at the gate. There would be more IL cars in the lots than WI.

Because it's the NASCAR weekend, Grand Am is going to use the Short Course.

They are also here on July 1 for the Six Hours on the Long Course.

Personally, I way prefer ALMS (will be going to Lime Rock and Mosport), but I usually go to the Six Hours since it's local for me and I always manage to find a way to get in free.

I don't think the drivers were complaining. I think they were just making an observation. ALL the drivers lobbied for the wing changes to reduce downforce to prevent pack racing and force them to actually drive the cars. Sure, it was harder, but they all knew the circumstances. They were just relaying that feeling in the interviews.
