Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Well, it's going to start soon enough.

and since we are talking unrest in egypt, we actually need to talk about it in this thread- GP2 practice has been canceled in Bahrain. I take that back- the entire RACE has been canceled in Bahrain.

They are looking toward a replacement to the F1 opener, but it's unlikely to happen quickly, if things fall apart in Bahrian.

In other news- Heidfield will sit in for injured Kubica this season.
And we still face the idea of having Group Lotus racing against Team Lotus. While you can trace the $$ back to both of Champain's enterprises, I don't see either as Lotus but in name only. So I'm just going to sit back and laugh while both teams struggle with identity and speed.

So we should be racing san-fenders, soon enough. Just forget about the race this weekend... ;)

I was very pleased to see Schumi on top of the charts 1 day last week. Maybe there is hope yet.

The IRL ditched Motegi; great move. They need to run all the races in timezones that make sense for ratings in North America. I hate all those F1 races out east; it really sucks the flow of the season right out the door for F1 for me. F1 needs to stay more true to it's European roots and not chase $$$ all over the globe.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! TG is back on the board of Directors of Hulman & Co, the administrators and funders of the IMS and Indycar. Hopefully he's just sit quietly and nod yes.

I just read about this this morning. I really, really, really, hope it's just for the family to have "peace" and that he's really not going to do anything more than hold down a chair at the board meetings.

I think that the Bahrain race will get cancelled. Of course with Bernie one never knows. I read this morning that there is talk of moving the Bahrain practice to Barcelona. I think I read that the problem is that some equipment has already been shipped out (boat) and is on it's way to Bahrain and that other stuff, which will go by air, will need to go by mid next week. So a decision needs to be made ASAP.

Good to see Nick get another ride. He's much more talented than a lot of the drivers currently in seats. It will be interesting to see how he does against Petrov.

That Lotus thing is a mess. And I agree, neither is really Lotus.

I am shocked Bernie would leave money out there but the Bahrain GP has been postponed.

Now this has some interesting possibilities. I think having Crapcar or ALMS or some other series driver compete at Las Vegas is much more possible than Indy.

Just the fact of that promotional video is a big thing. Indy Car has struggled to tell anyone about it, I think.

but the $5M is a cool deal. (the 80k free tickets is actually pretty brilliant- probably backed by Vegas hotels)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

A reminder that we are close enough to this season....

Specifically for 2011- it appears that Bernie waived the cancellation fees for Bahrain, due to the nature of the cancellation. Funny.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Sure was nice of Bernie! I am shocked he did that.

I am super excited for this.....Hamilton and Stewart to swap cars and run at Watkins Glen!

So if Lewis and Tony stay in touch, can we expect to see Lewis in a cup car in about 5 years....

Happened before.

I'll predict that it will take Lewis longer to figure out the cup car vs. Tony the other way around. Sure, an F1 car is a long way from a indy car, but it's still closer than a cup car.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

So I was looking at the Crapcar and F1 schedules. And this will most likely happen during Crapcar's Glen race in August. Crapcar is there from August 11 - 14th and F1 is off for their summer break from July 31st to August 28th. Ugh, so if I want to see this I will probably have to suck it up and purchase some kind of Crapcar ticket.

From Speed.com:

No Quick Fix For Korea 'Love Motel' Problem: Some visitors to South Korea for the country's second F1 race this year will again have to stay in so-called "love motels." That is the admission of Joo Dong-sik, head of the Yeongam event's organizing committee, after a meeting this week. Korea won the FIA's 2010 race promotion prize, but from other quarters the event was criticized for problems including circuit construction delays and poor management. Another high-profile problem was the fact that — with the city section of the facility not yet built — many team members and journalists stayed in what became known as "love motels." The phrase was coined due to the hotel rooms' obviously frequent usage by prostitutes. "We are currently faced with no other options but to utilize existing accommodations and upgrade their quality," said Dong-sik, admitting the accommodation shortage. "But we feel that the upgrades, such as free internet and cable television, will satisfy our visitors," he told the Joongang daily. It has also been announced that tickets are significantly cheaper for this year's October event in a bid to boost attendance.

I am thinking that there are other ways for the visitors to get satisified in those motels. ;) :D

So Firestone is out of Indycar at the end of this year. That was a shock. If I were Indycar, I would have asked that they not announce it until the replacement had been signed on. Now Indycar may on the short end in whatever negociations go on for a replacement supplier unless more than 1 comes forward. Plus it's a lot less of a pr hit when there's a seemless transition and not a gaping hole in a plan. Too bad they just can't use what F1 is using, but those tyres are so engineered for certain tracks it's just not posible.

Which is really to say that Bridgestone is 100% getting out of racing. Oh, well.

I wonder if Goodyear will step up, and do it some more? Or will we see a Korean tire company try to get more exposure.

Pirrelli has no real impact in the US, so I can't see that happening.

According to Speed Channel, Bernard has been talking with Goodyear, Hoosier, Michelin and Avon. I can't see Avon getting into Indycar, but maybe one of the other three might.

Interesting ones- I would have said the same about Avon, but they can be branded Cooper Tire- since Cooper own Avon- according to their website.

I had no clue that Avon was owned by Cooper. Hm, maybe that makes more sense now.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2011, hurry, before we downsize your engines....

Anyone else see the report that Bernie wants to artificially wet the track surfaces? The ghost of Gilles Villeneuve would wet its pants if that happened.

I read that comment. I chalked it up to an old senile man who doesn't know anything about racing except how to fleece track/cities out of their money.
