Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

What?!?!?!? Ferrari #2???? Blasphemy! ;)

It's just as Blasphemous that we are rooting FOR Ferrari. Well, we being Mrs. Alfa, and Ferrari meaning Alonso and not Massa.... I'm still for Hamilton and McLaren.

Saw the end of qualifying before heading out for the run. The new qualifying rules kind of suck- lots of nothing happening. And then they all go out at the last possible moment for a fast flying lap. Actually, the worst thing about the new set up is the total lack of data from the F1 feed. Nothing. You have no idea what the order is....

Anyway, interesting results- remember, this is on vapors, but with the tires they start the race on-
Vettel- 1:54.101
Masa- 1:54.242
Alonso- 1:54.608
Hamilton- 1:55.217
Rosberg- 1:55.241
Weber
Schumacher
Button
Kubica
Sutil.

So Nico is faster than Michael. We will see how that goes to morrow.

And Sutil ran on the hard compound. If he can keep close, he's in a good position to run the soft compound tires on a lighter car.

For sure, I'll get up early to watch the F1 Race.

Next up- Sao Palo qualifying at 2pm.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

More troubles for the IRL....

Qualifying was canceled today. Front straight was so slippery that no cars could get any traction in any gear. They are going to try to texture the surface tonight and qualify tomorrow morning.

Apparently, the surface was painted for Carnival, and when stripped, it was nice and smooth.... oops.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Graham Rahal inked a 2-race deal with Sarah Fisher (love her as a driver and for her guts and attitude, but this speaks volumes as to what's wrong with the current model. Pay to play can suck it).

OTOH - it *appears* for the millionth time we've got a new open wheel boss "saying" all the right things....we'll know in 6 months if this guy can walk the walk

encouraging news to me is 24 cars start tomorrow.

though...no Paul Tracy, and no Graham Rahal is complete b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t.

F1...that first corner may be the most exciting I've seen in a while. No effing way Schumacher comes out of that in 7th. He'll be up to 3rd or better or be out of it.

It's really disappointing that Senna is on such a lousy team. I mean if Piquet got on a mid-level team I don't see why Senna can't make to *at least* that level of team.

Red Bull may be proving now that they're here to stay at the top of the grid.

Williams improving???? thoughts????

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Had it not been for a suspected (I'm sure we'll find out later) broken header, I think the end of that race would have been really interesting. Before the break, Alonso was able to close on Vettel to challenge for the lead. But the break gave the lead to Fernando, and he then took the fastest lap once in the lead. Heck of a start for the new guy (Alonso has now won a race for 3 teams.... not bad).

McLaren/Hamilton was good when not behind Rosberg. Showed some good speed, but could not close enough on Masa to challenge for 2nd. Still have to qualify better. Button- eh... not bad.

Mercedes- Michael... well- finished. I have to give him a few races to get 100% back in shape, if he can, and really develop the ar to his needs/style. Rosberg- good run- finished ahead of your teammate.

Renault/Kubica- hard to start a race with a spin, but he was fast. Willimas was pretty good, Sauber had a few moments, but the mid team that showed anthing continues to be Force India.

New guys- Lotus was the only team to finish both cars. Let me rephrase thta- they were the only new team to FINISH. But, all things considered, the times that they ALL showed wasn't all that horrible- lots of late nights and scrambling got them on the grid, and all but HRT started on the grid- HRT started in the pits. Long way to go, but it is a long season.

Haven't seen any news on the concrete repair in Sao Paulo. But I'll tune in to watch.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

After watching the race, I am very pessimistic about the level of excitement in F1 races this year. I was afraid that the changes from last year would make it less likely to see much passing, and that seems to have been the case today.

I fear the pit strategy will be the same just about every race, soft tires for the first third of the race (because they will need them in the qualification for good grid position, but during the race they will quickly turn to crap due to the heavy fuel load) and then riding deteriorating hard tires until the end. Changes in position during the race will most likely occur primarily due to mechanical or tire problems.

Hopefully I will be proven wrong, but I am considering watching the International Paint Drying Association Championships or the Global Grass Growing League over F1 if this weekend is any indication of what the whole season will be like.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

I few thoughts on this weekends races..

F1: I thought it was a decent race. The start was interesting. I am wondering if Liuzzi turned into Sutil on purpose? I think he is that desperate to stay in F1 and he is certainly out classed by Sutil. If it was NASCAR I would say it was a definite but since it's open wheel, I'm not so sure.

At any rate the race was a bit slow until Alonso came alive. Like Alfa said I would have loved to see him and Vettel battle it out at the end.

Props to Lotus. I think they are definitely best in class of the new teams. They will probably be challenging STR for grid position soon enough.

Schumi look very good considering his years of layoff. He won't win the championship this year but I think he will certainly get a win or two.

Kubica showed decent pace in what my opinion is a inferior car. Rubens showed that he still has it even at his age. I love seeing a driver in F1 that is older than I am! :)

My concerns for the year are: 1) Qualifying is going to be boring again at least for the top teams. 2.) I am concerned about the lack of refueling taking away from the racing stragedy. Although I am not as pessimistic as others are. ;) It's still early in the season.

IRL: Terrible race. They should never go back to that street race again unless there are some major changes. Between the concrete being too slick (and dusty at the start) and the bumps it was almost unbearable to watch. At least there was some fireworks at the start. I'm not a Marco fan but he got hosed by a stupid mistake(s). What in the heck were the back markers thinking at the start? Trying to win in on the first lap? Good grief that was horrible.

The race also showed why the pay-to-drive drivers have to pay. They suck. That is all.

Also, if IRL wants to race in Brazil they should change to Interlagos.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

F1: I like the fact that who gets the pole doesn't depend on fuel load in qualifying. I really missed the fuel strategy during the race. I think that the in race intrigue is lacking. Before, at least even if there wasn't a lot of passing, you still had the various fuel load strategies to shake up the order. I'd rather see refueling and no tire changes.

It will take Schumi some time to get back in rhythm.

McLaren may be in a bit of trouble, but I read their diffuser had to be changed before the next race.

IRL: I only saw the race from the restart after the rain until the end. That racing wasn't bad (there was passing compared to the F1 race), but the track was way too tight and bumpy. I was really bummed Brisoe screwed up. I was looking for the Penske 1-2. Hunter-Ray was impressive. Danica sucked BAD. :D

I don't think they will ever go back to no tire changes after what happened a couple of years ago with Raikonen trying (and failing) to finish a race with blatantly dangerous tires. That was a rule that was just asking for trouble.

Of course as I stated before the no refueling rule will have similar consequences, encouraging drivers to take a chance and try to finish the race on bad tires. Hungarian TV showed a shot of one of the top three driver's tires after the race and they were in scary condition.

In addition, following another car (in passing distance) puts more stress and wear on the tires, so there were several instances in the race where guys backed off and gave up any chance to pass just to save their tires.

I think the tire manufacturers could make a tire hard enough to last the race if they really wanted to. In fact, a harder tire may place more emphasis on the driver and not a sticky car.

I am sure you are right, but the problem that occurred with Raikonen was due to either a faulty or damaged tire (I cannot remember the situation perfectly), and he wasn't sure whether he might be disqualified or penalized for changing. If I recall correctly, when the tire started going bad he had enough of a lead to possibly come back from the pits still in first place or at worst second. But in fear of the rule he stayed out, losing 7-10 seconds per lap until the tire blew on the last or second to last lap with him still in first. At any rate the rule caused him (or encouraged him) to stay out on a dangerous tire, and after that fiasco I don't think that rule will ever be brought back.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Too, bad that USF1 will not be racing this year. I was looking forward to seeing the first American team since Dan Gurney and the All American Racers. Dan was the last winner of a F1 race by an all American team at Spa in 1967. Anderson was a shock absorber engineer, not sure how much he knew about designing race cars. Lots of technology including an air tunnel in North Carolina. Perhaps next year?

Great point on what to do IF you have a problem. I can see why that will never happen.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Thanks to my wife choosing what to watch on TV tonight, the highlight of my evening is getting to see Hamilton in the crowd on Dancing with the Stars watching his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger. :o

I guess I was not doing a good enough job of distracting myself. :(

I thought it was Hamilton I caught a glimpse of in the crowd and I made my wife back it up so I could double check. At first I think my wife was actually excited that I was interested in the show! Then I went and told her why I was interested I got the "Only you could find a way to connect this to racing!!" :D

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2010...He's baaack...He's gone...

Just when I thought I might get some hope for IRL...

IRL sets up Committee to pick new car

A Retired Air Force General for the committee head? Hm, not what I would pick but maybe he might be ok.

But it sounds like IRL is going continue to go down the path of one chassis and one engine. UGH! What is it with IRL and a single chassis/engine? Don't they understand that takes away an element of interest for the fans? I like cheering for against an engineer/car supplier! It's part of what makes racing fun.

Hopefully the General is just the facilitator of the meetings and will take good notes.

The state of the IRL is like the health care debate in the US. The folks in charge are ignoring what the majority of the people want.

Rahal back to his old seat is a good thing.
