Ohio State Coach???

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Check Twitter!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes if this stiff is true!

I think the still was fired but OK. :)

Interestingly, deadspin.com posted the story yesterday. For all their focus on the biggies they do catch a lot of lesser known stuff

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Tessa Bonhomme as next coach, or is she having too much fun with the TSN gig?

I think Tessa would make a great coach, despite the lack of experience. She obviously knows the game, and what player wouldn't want to play for someone who won a gold medal in the Olympics? Unfortunately for us OSU Womens Hockey fans, I think she is having a great time in TO with her TSN gig!

Re: Ohio State Coach???

Knowing how to play and how to coach aren't the same.

Absolutely agree. Tessa is a personality and an important part of OSU's past. She is not a coach, never has been and not sure if she has any interest in becoming a coach. This would not be viewed as an attraction to any recruit, current or future. Bring in an experienced coach (Miller, Fetter) or an up and coming assistant with credibility (Schuller, Friesen) and the program will gain credibility overnight. Knowing the inns and out of the conference is definitely a bonus. Big school, excellent freshman class, top recruits coming in, this is without a doubt a terrific opportunity.

My guess would be she is happy with where she is at. Her personality appears to be a great fit for that role.

You make good points. I certainly hope the athletic department here realizes how important this hire is to the future of the program. If they make a bad hire here, we could lose our recruiting class, and the program would be set back for years. I am cautiously optimistic based on the OSU athletic department's track record with the hockey programs. Last time we went through this (men's team), no big names wanted the men's job. We promoted an assistant coach that the players lobbied for and you're seeing how that is turning out right now (5th out of 6 teams in a weak BIG Ten Hockey Conference).

Re: Ohio State Coach???

there has been a turnover of 5 of 8 coaches in the WCHA in the last 2 years
the second big turnover in the short history
(nit picker please refrain, everybody but you knows what I mean, it doesn't need to be pointed out)
and those that need the obvious stated, just be patient, it will become clear to you

any significance here, or just coincidence?

Count me as a big Tessa fan, but I must agree. If she actually wants to a coach -- and we don't know that -- an Assistant Coach's role might be plausible. But coming in cold, no coaching experience whatsoever, and taking the top job at a D-1 program? That's not a fair expectation for anyone, even a strong personality like Tessa.

Re: Ohio State Coach???

I totally agree, but not all former players end up being bad coaches.
Definitely agree. Most of the best coaches played, at least at some level. But there seems to be a perception among many that great players can hang up the skates and immediately be a good head coach at a high level. Some are natural coaches and can do fine; others need to start at a much more elementary level. Some players who were too small or too slow may have a better head for the game and be better equipped to pass knowledge on to others.

It's like when a network hires a former athlete to be an announcer for a sport. Because a person can run, jump, or skate, it doesn't necessarily mean that the same person can describe action coherently in real time.
