Ohio State Buckeyes 2023-24 The Muzzinator Gonna Muzzinate!!

This comment made me idly curious about how many freshmen on the Ohio State roster actually won a national championship as a freshman. (As opposed to how many on the current UW roster who have done so - 13)

And surprisingly - unless I'm reading something wrong, and I could be - the answer is "zero"? Nobody on the 2021-22 roster who was a freshman that year is still on the roster? Honestly, I did not intend to actually post something here, until I came up with that answer. Is that really the case? Am I missing someone?

(The wiseguy part of the answer is there is one player on the current OSU roster who won a natty as a freshman - Makenna Webster.)

Looks to me like Ohio State only had 2 freshmen in 2021-22, and those 2 have transfered to UMaine and a USports school, but OSU currently has about 8 players who won the national title in 2022. It also looks like the freshmen this season have played in more games and tallied overall more points than the freshmen in 2021-22.

Wow this is crazy.

Amos has that Liz Shepherds attitude and leads by example. As a freshman it incredibly impressive. The young talent and incoming talent is going to be fun to watch. I really love Baxter's game as well. Fleming has been strong and focused in her development. It's an enlightening experience to be a freshman on this current roster.

Now that you mention it, she does remind me of Liz, too. Our first year players have been playing really well this season and it was great seeing Jordan finally get some goals! Joy Dunne getting WCHA Rookie of the Year, along with the other first-years who are making a splash on this team kind of blows up the bullshit that all Coach does is get transfers. Last time I checked, recruiting was part of coaching, whether it's a first-year or a transfer. People are over on the WCHA thread dissing Coach about the WCHA Coach of the Year Award. Haters gonna hate, I guess! LOL, they act like they wouldn't have wanted players like Cayla Barnes or Hannah Bilka on their team. The ironic thing about the fanbase that is over there making the most noise is that they don't win National Titles in 2019 and 2021 without transfers (Kristen Campbell in net in 2019, Kennedy Blair in net in 2021, and oh by the way, Daryl Watts scored the game-winner against Northeastern in the 2021 National Title Game). I guess they're the only ones who are allowed to get transfers, LOL.

One of those first-years just got the WCHA Rookie of the Year Award, Joy Dunne.

Campbell was of course something of a special case.

But you've mentioned three transfers over the course of five years or so. That's what, 25% of the number of transfers OSU has on its roster this year alone?

I am *really* looking forward to see how this plays out over the next year or two. As I've said, I fully expect the transfer pool to largely dry up. The idea that they'll be players like Bilka and Barnes ready to replace this year's crop strikes me as *highly* unlikely. We'll see.

(Adding, one more note: the 2019 and 2021 teams also had a goalie on the roster named Cami Kronish. She turned out to be pretty good, capable of winning a natty, as well.)

I mentioned those three because those are the only three I am aware of. I am not an expert on Wisconsin Women's Hockey, so I am sure there are more than just those three. As was the case with Kristen Campbell, we got three transfers a few years back from Robert Morris when they dropped their program. We also got Charly Dahlquist from North Dakota when they dropped their program. It's funny you mentioned Coach loading up with "All-Stars" from the transfer portal on the other thread. You sure wouldn't know it from the All-WCHA Teams as only two of our players made the first team, none on the second team, and a few players on the third team. It's all good, we're used to the league disrespecting our program, been doing it for a long time. It was a nice surprise to see two of our first-years on the WCHA All-Rookie Team. As for the transfer portal, I think there will be one more year of it being crazy as this year's seniors will be the last class that gets the extra year due to covid. I think 2025 will be the start of a downturn when it comes to the transfer portal, but I don't think it is going away altogether as there will always be players who are not happy with their situation and want a change of scenery. Whatever happens, I trust Coach to adapt to the change. She had us winning and going to Frozen Fours before the transfer portal became a thing.

UW has had one or two transfers on their roster since what I'm picking as the start of the Muzerall era, her first FF team, 2018. One year as many as many as three. Seven total?

I think people are wildly overrating the skill that's going to be in the transfer portal this coming summer. A healthy number of the potential high-end players who could use a COVID year went through their senior days and are expected to head for the PWHL Draft. Some of them I presume will not get drafted with the influx of international talent expected, and I don't know what the policy would be if you declare for the PWHL Draft and are not picked.

According to the transfer portal thread, there are 22 players in the portal, but your point is valid regarding the skill level, and as you mentioned, the opportunity to get drafted in the PWHL and make a living playing pro hockey.

The "one time undergrad transfer window" doesn't open until a week? ten days? after NCAA selection Sunday. COVID year grad transfers don't have to wait until then, they can enter whenever they choose. But it would be understandable to wait until their season ends. So the trickle so far could pick up steam over the next three or four weeks.

There's a further irony here, at least for me individually. And interestingly enough, perhaps Timothy A.

A number of years ago, we had a conversation on this forum regarding wisdom of relaxing the transfer rules. As I remember it, there was pretty much universal agreement that a player who earned her degree, yet had eligibility remaining, should be free to go to graduate school wherever she wished. Calmness.

But in other situations, I had some reservations. I hope I'm remembering my ally correctly; apologies if I'm wrong. But IIRC, Timothy A & I were more or less on the same page, asking the same questions. We weren't yelling Calamity, but we were expressing concern about unlimited transfers.

It was a lonely experience. We got sternly preached to. The full Reverend Smedley treatment. We were more or less shamed into silence.

So how does it play out? Timothy A's Badgers get some key transfers that put them over the top. More than once. My Buckeyes reap a bountiful harvest of transfers that led to a regular season for the ages, and perhaps more. Don't get me wrong. I respect those Badger Championships; and I'm incredibly proud of our current Buckeyes. But I am scratching my head over the irony of this. To the doubters go the spoils??

I'm not claiming to remember every single poster's individual opinion. But the "Reverend Smedleys" -- those staunch defenders of unlimited transfers -- don't seem to be weighing in. I'll just say this: If any of you are out there lurking, be more careful what you wish for.

I was thinking about a comment that Robert made about Muzzy should get credit for building her roster the way she has as far as the coach of the year thing goes. After thinking about this for hours and hours, I would agree. When I see the word "coach" I think X's and O's but in reality there's also a huge part of the job that's GMing. I would give her an A for being a GM. They have the deepest roster in the country. I'd give her a B- for coaching because a one-arm blind monkey could coach this team to first place all the Sr and Gr talent she put on it. I would have given her a C, but I do give her credit for getting them to play together.

When I think about Mark Johnson, I give him a B+ for GM. His roster had zero depth at forward. He only had 12 and two were injured all year, but the acquisition of Wilgren was a super under the radar sneaky good move. He also has the best eye for talent in the country when it comes to defenseman. I would give him an A for coaching. He navigated the injuries skillfully and has the three top scoring forwards in the WCHA, which was unexpected considering who Muzzy brought to the table.

Haha, another diss job by our own league! She is somehow the third team goaltender in the WCHA, but she is up for the National Goaltender of the Year.

With all the part-time goalies, is almost impossible to pick a goalie of the year in a league or a conference. Might as well put all the names in a hat and pick 3.

In those days, there weren't as many student athletes looking to transfer, and I still expect that the Covid season factors heavily into it. If your position is that it isn't fair to the players already on the roster to get buried under an avalanche of transfers into the program, I'd agree with you. Otherwise, my position both then and now is that it doesn't really serve anyone's interest to make student athletes remain on a roster that they no longer wish to be on, while non-athletes have the freedom to transfer. In discussions, we can often paint the players as being young, impressionable, or for some reason, incapable of making an intelligent decision regarding where they should study and play. My experience in meeting them suggests otherwise -- they are more mature than the average poster here.

Fair assessment, although I would give Coach Nadine a little better coaching grade than you did. OSU went 26-2 in the WCHA, our best league record ever, and Coach was not there for one of those losses, which I still think made a difference. People can disagree with me on that, but I think it made a difference that Nadine was not there in that upset loss vs. St. Cloud. The other league loss was the last league game of the season, a road loss to your Badgers. Would have been nice to be able to hold the 2-0 lead that we had at the first intermission, but you have a great team there just as we do here. As I said on another thread, recruiting is part of the job, too, not just the games. When you are down here in Ohio where there is no girls high school hockey, along with having a subpar facility (putting that mildly), you have to get creative with recruiting (ie. utilize the transfer portal). Cannot wait until we get the new facility built. That should help recruiting.

While I don't fully agree with your take, I have no real problem with your position, then or now. The Reverend Smedley comment wasn't directed at you. Nevertheless, I appreciate that you had the integrity to step up and offer a principled response.

Fair point that the quantity of transfers has temporarily increased due to the covid year. Maybe the controversy largely goes away in 2025. Maybe.

In the earlier conversation, I did have some reservations about a system that gives some players two D-1 opportunities, leaving others with no opportunity at all. But that train has left the station. I accept the idea that this is an elite level battle for scarce ice time, and that there's no entitlement to that ice time. The powers that be have determined that an (essentially) unlimited transfer rule still constitutes fair competition. As such, those of us with concerns "lost" the argument. The best response is to accept the decision, and compete within the agreed upon rules.

As far as I'm concerned, that's all that Coach Muzzerall and her staff have done. Compete for transfer talent within the agreed upon rules. And yet the bricks fly about our supposedly unfair advantage. And the Reverend Smedleys are nowhere to be found. Do I find this surprising? No. Am I nevertheless a little disappointed by the deafening silence? I'll admit I am.

It's just discouraging that lofty principles are aggressively claimed, then easily shrugged off.

No call Bradshaw doing his thing today by not doing anything! I've watched numerous trips, an interference and Bilka gets thrown down and he takes her as well!
Sure hope he doesn't get in ice tomorrow!
