Ohio State Buckeyes 2012-2013 Thread

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2012-2013 Thread

Some are already on the WCHA thread predicting a sweep for Wisconsin this weekend. I hope our kids prove them all wrong. I get the sense from some posters that they somehow think we are a fluke despite the fact that we have been going toe-to-toe and have at times defeated the top teams in the league in the past. I think some rival posters somehow think we are going to suddenly forget everything that made us successful in the first half of the season and come crashing back to earth. I don't see that happening. I have been to a couple practices this season and if the scrimmage and skills competition over the weekend was any indication, I don't think we'll have to worry about any rust from the layoff. The girls looked sharp to me, like they hadn't missed a beat. We'll see what happens, but I believe in our coaches and kids.

Actually...not a fluke theory at all by me...rather a sense of UW becoming more typically impressive as the season has progressed, particularly of late. They were a tough out at Ridder in Dec. and handled the Whioux at home after that. If UW plays as I expect the Buckeyes will be tasked considerably. I would much prefer the Red Weasels were not in 2nd place at the series conclusion.

Brookyone, point is well taken. Wisconsin has been playing much better hockey as of late than they did earlier this season. If we come out of this series with a split, which will likely keep us in second place, I will be content with that. Minnesota is the only team in the league this season that has swept us. We did split with UND and Wisconsin at home, but we have swept everyone else. Wisconsin is definitely improved, but I believe our team has gotten better as the season has progressed also. We'll see what happens this weekend. I am sure our coaching staff will have our team ready.

ARM, thanks. Yes, I remember reading that. I'll have to read it again and refresh my memory on our recruits. I try to check the OSU athletic website regularly, especially the womens hockey stuff. Unfortunately, womens hockey doesn't get the attention that some of our other sports do, so there may be a day or two between articles. Thanks again for linking that for me. :)

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2012-2013 Thread

Thanks to both ARM & osualum86 for the follow-up. I also check-in with OSU's official website on a fairly regular basis, but I certainly do miss things.

Interesting to note that among the 5 incoming players, 2 U.S. States and 3 Canadian Provinces are represented. I guess it's fair to say that our prime recruiting area is "North America," and sometimes Scandinavia as well! On the plus side, it makes for an exciting diversity; a team that everyone can fit into. On the down side, it does makes it very difficult for anyone other than full-time coaches to see more than one of the incoming players perform with their current teams.

Certainly we've had Ohio natives on the team. But even in that case, they may spend their high school years widely dispersed. Straining my memory here, but I think it's accurate to say that April Stojack is orginally from Kent, Ohio, but played her high school hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary's.

Bottom Line? It feels a little lazy, but generally I just wait until the players get to OSU before really paying attention.

You better start recruiting Australia heavier to keep up with your upcoming opponent (although those home visits can be taxing.)

LOL, it's not that I don't pay attention, but it normally takes me until the second half of the season (late December or January) before I finally have all the new freshmen's names and numbers down. The 'ol memory isn't what it used to be, that's for sure!

"G'day Mate. Let's put another shrimp on the barby!"

I was sorry to see them go, but I wish them the best at UConn and Buffalo State. If your assistant coaches are any good, you eventually lose them to head coaching jobs elsewhere. I am sure Coach Handrahan will bring in some decent coaches to replace them. To be honest, the bigger story this spring was our mens coach getting fired for reasons that most are still not sure of. We have already lost two commitments and some are saying we are going to lose Zach Stepan due to Osiecki's firing, but I digress. I am looking forward to the women's hockey season. We have a great group coming back and Coach has more great recruits coming in. Plus, our team shouldn't be adversely affected by the 2014 Winter Olympics. The only player I can think of off the top of my head who we might lose to the Olymplics would be Annie Svedin. She has played with the Swedish National Team in recent years. Other than that, our D will be real solid with Chelsea Knapp back between the pipes, along with the Schmitt twins and other returning blue-liners. If all the forwards continue to chip in and score goals, we will continue to be a tough out for anyone. What I want to see this season is for us to get off to the start we did last season, only this time, keep that going in the second half of the season. I think a good goal would be to finish in the top four (outright) and host a first-round series, then see what happens in the WCHA Final Four. This will be Coach Handrahan's third season and I am really enjoying the direction he has the program moving.

Mox is actually headed to DIII Buffalo State:

Otherwise, agreed.

Of course it's tough to lose good people. Yet this is also an opportunity to bring new energy and perspectives to the program. And with Coach Nate still at the helm, I'm confident we'll be fine in terms of stability.

Yeah, I read that after I had posted and had not gone back to edit my post. Maybe I will do that now (haha). I'm with you on this, as long as Coach Nate is in charge, I am sure he will bring in some quality assistant coaches. I am really looking forward to next season! What can I say? I am having "Pgb's Three Stars Of The Game" withdrawal! :D
