Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

Re: Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

they had a PP with 4 minutes left and could have ended it right then but they didnt and look what happened. If you take matters in your hands and dont leave the outcome to chance then there will be no what if's. I would have liked to be at practice this morning.

That's my feeling on this whole series. We had our chances to add to our leads in both games and didn't get it done. We had a five-minute major to work with in Saturday's game and did nothing with it. Need to shore up the special teams (namely the power play) if we want to be successful this weekend vs Michigan.

I want to see the BUCKS get back to the teamwork playing we had in the first half. To me some players are getting selfish around the net and not passing to the open man for the goal. TEAMWORK wins games. GO BUCKS.

Re: Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

This may be covered somewhere else on the board or in this large thread, but, can one of you Buckeye types explain why you aren't drawing more fans to your games, please?

2,376 per game? In that building? In the Big 10? The number 2 team in the country?

Looks like people are going to Blue Jackets games. Is that the problem? Outwardly, this does not make much sense to an outsider looking in.

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Several reasons.

1. The program has been in the crapper since 2005.

2. The athletic department has (foolishly in my opinion) focused their marketing efforts on presenting the games as a cheaper family option to the Blue Jackets for Columbus locals rather than getting a building full of students.

3. The Schott is a horrible venue for hockey unless there's 13K in there for a Michigan game. Even during the glory years (or as close as we've come to such things), the atmosphere left a lot to be desired when there would be 5 or 6 thousand for a game.

4. Lack of a deep hockey culture in Ohio

5. Top 5 programs in football AND basketball tend to suck a lot of oxygen out of the room. Students can only get excited about so many sports programs.

All of which makes me absolutely furious about this crap occurring on Sunday. How galactically stupid does Gene Smith have to be to take the one hockey weekend that the students (and local alumni) really get excited about and move it off f#$%ing campus and to another g-d city.

Short term, a program on the rise and the BTHC should help. Long term, Ohio State desperately needs a 7-9K hockey arena.

The building size thing is something of an issue here as well. What they do here at the Clink is curtain off the upper level of the arena on one side and one end. This brings the capacity down on the nights those sections are curtained off to the 11,000 or so range and makes for a more intimate setting. Still, we play in a cavernous building as well. But, we'll averaged 8000 or better once the season is said and done and have done so for 9 out of the 15 years of the program's existence.

With D-1 programs starting with you guys, and then Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio (Findlay--well almost although UNO has played them twice--in 2001) and the other D-1 programs that are nearby and the legacies of all, it seems odd that there is a "lack of a deep hockey culture in Ohio".

Yeah, I would imagine that OSU basketball and football might overshadow hockey a bit.

Joining the BTHC should improve things as you said.

Since the university is already managing two huge arenas in Columbus, it seems illogical that there is probably much sentiment to build the 7-9K hockey arena you are talking about and manage a third.

We all saw how galactically stupid Gene Smith (and Gee) was during the whole Jim Tressel thing. Must spill over into other things.

If I was on the BUCKS Coaching staff I would be knocking on AD Gene Smiths door demanding some answers.

The reason for it even being in Cleveland is it's part of the Indian's winter promotion and is being paid for by the Indians. Did you think OSU would spend real money on hockey? Now I would hope that if the program is successful under Oseicki and grows a respectable fan base I could forsee someday an OSU - Michigan outdoor game being played in the horseshoe. Now just because you may not have been correct about why the out of town venue doesn't mean you are wrong in your opinion of Gene Smith. lol!

As I mentioned on this thread Coach Oseicki & company have dramatically improved our fortunes this season and it's hoped that it's the new standard for our program. Now I lament the havoc done by the Big Ten to the CCHA & WCHA but perhaps attendence will also improve with the new conference as I imagine a lot of buckeye fans who may not necessairly be hockey fans would be more interested in watching us play a longtime conference foe like Wisconsin rather than Lake Superior State (no offense Lakers) or other schools only really known to the hockey fans.

You, us, & the rest of the world see this but apparently our Board of Trustees can't so they're just as stupid!

Re: Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

I think the outdoor game in Cleveland accomplishes several things. First - it doesn't cost OSU anything. Second - there should be a decent crowd. Third - it's about making the program fun for the players and even more so for future recruits. If Oz and the team are successful for the next few years I would very much like to see them do it again in about four years.

Red Cows: They do partition off the upper deck in the shot with black curtains and only use the lower bowl for hockey. My understanding is that the lower bowl is almost full for Friday night and that part of the upper deck will actually be in use if ticket sales continue.

This year the student section is far, far improved from previous years. They are making the games fun.

Student participation is an issue here as well, mostly because UNO is making a transition from a commuter school to a campus based housing school. The deletion of the football and wrestling programs here this year will also serve to redirect student's energies since hockey is now the pre-eminent sport at UNO. Students seem to show for the "glamor" games, mostly, although joining the WCHA also has helped.

Won't be an issue this weekend, though, with upwards of 17,000 at the Clink to see us play Minnesota Duluth on Friday night and the game being on national television:

You guys were our "sell out" game two years ago. There will be students galore at the game this Friday night for a change.

Re: Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

Smith is gone. Wheels, unfortunately, are going to have to spin slower than many would wish regarding Smith. I agree that Gee didn't handle the whole JT thing well. JT should have been whacked before Gene Smith's abortion of a press conference, and that stupid "hope he doesn't fire me" quip will live in infamy. That being said, Gee is a sharp son of a *****. There's a lot of reasons that Les Wexner flew down to Nashville and personally brought him back. He inherited GS, and needs to go through certain motions, but there is no way that he, Wexner, Schottenstein and the other power brokers will allow Smith to stay on long term. The writing was more than on the wall when they wouldn't let GS handle the Meyer negotiations. Gee, Wexner and Schottenstein hired Urban themselves.

Red Cows, I feel for you. As bad as GS is, I can't imagine the horror of having Trev Alberts running the show.

Oops, I am a supporter of Trev Alberts. My comments cut and pasted from elsewhere on the topic:

"FYI, I support and agree with Trev Alberts decision(s) here. He said the entire athletic department would have been broke in 5 years if he hadn't taken these steps and there is no doubt in my mind that he was right. I can totally understand why outsiders looking in might think his actions were stupid or wrong. He's defended himself and his decision ever since and I support him. They hired him to clean up the mess that was the UNO Athletic Department and, IMHO, he's made sure we're gonna have one in the future. Do a Google search about what went on in UNO's Athletic Department between Trev's tenure and Bob Dannenhauer's tenure as AD, previously, at UNO and you'll see what sort of mess Trev inherited."

This requires some explanation. My comments are about Trev's decision to eliminate football and wrestling. The AD between Bob Dannehauer (I spelled his name wrong in the post above) and Trev Alberts was David Herbster.

I assume you are talking about his "controversial" decision to eliminate football and wrestling. If not, I'd be interested in knowing what issue you have with him.

More the decision to eliminate wrestling, and I'm a zero fan of the sport. I actually think that schools like UNO should not pump millions of dollars into money losing football programs. A strong and relatively low cost wrestling program is something else though.

And to be honest, a lot of animosity towards Trev goes back to his days on ESPN. He was Craig James (who may or may not have killed 5 hookers while at SMU) before Craig James was Craig James. That is to say, Trev took going full retard to a whole other level.

Re: Ohio state " buckeyes " 2011 / 2012 season.

As much as we all hate Gene Smith (and deservedly so) shouldn't some of the hockey hate fall on Asst AD Chris Schneider, who really runs hockey? Do you think Gene even popays any attention to hockey. Schneider is the one calling the shots when it comes to the Puck Bucks and should take equal if not more blame for things.

Just my opinion....

Perhaps. I think it's more of a long term cultural thing within the AD. Hockey is really looked at as no different than fencing or swimming. In fact, it might be looked at worse since it costs more to run and has underperformed for so long.

I will give the athletic department credit for two things. They hired Oz, and they really drove the bus on the BTHC. Those two things, I guess, should not be overlooked.
