Ohio State 2024-25 Domination of the Portal Queen!

Minnesota was the hungrier team and played harder than us. We need better mental discipline, you can't give a team like Minnesota power plays and breakaways! Also our PP percentage is too low. It'll be interesting what this will cost us in the pairwise and the selection show. If we had advanced and lost to the Badgers I don't think that would hav dinger us.
Ohio State is the #2 seed, regardless of today's outcome.

Robertearle, I am thankful for your post as I was concerned about our position in the PairWise, but you are my go-to when in comes to that. Please beat the Gophers tomorrow to ensure that, K?

Ohio State was beaten soundly by Minnesota earlier tonight, 6-2. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Jocelyn Amos and Joy Dunne, but it was all Gophers after that as they scored 6 unanswered goals to soundly defeat Ohio State. Minnesota got two goals later in the first period from Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber to tie the game at two going into the first intermission. Audrey Wethington and Ava Lindsay scored goals for the Gophers in the second period to put the Gophers up 4-2 and the game out of reach. Minnesota would get two more goals in the third period from Abbey Murphy and an empty-netter from Chloe Primerano to complete the blowout victory for the Gophers. Ohio State outshot the Gophers in this game 24-21. Minnesota netminder Hannah Clark stopped 22 of the 24 shots she faced in the win. Buckeye backstop Amanda Thiele stopped 15 of the 20 shots she faced in the loss. Minnesota moves on to face Wisconsin in the WCHA Title Game tomorrow. Ohio State will now wait to see where they are seeded in the NCAA Tournament.

Totally agree. This team needs to step it up. They may not be as deep as last year's team, but they have the talent to win it all, provided they are hungrier than the teams they are playing!

It's fascinating how Muzzy and MJ are worlds apart in their approaches. Muzzy totally threw the team under da bus postgame. MJ would never do that publicly. Obviously both approaches are successful. It would be interesting 5 years from now to sit down in a bar with Wheeler, Kunz and Webster and hear about the coaching styles from 3 who have seen both sides of it.

It looked like OSU came out hard and was taking it to Minnesota until the two back to back power play goals by Minnesota then the tide seemed to turn. I said weeks ago the repeated penalties were going to bite OSU when it matters. They made several unsuccessful attempts to ice the puck and ultimately Murphy killed them from her Ovechkin spot on the ice (which I can't understand how OSU's penalty kill was not prepared to take that option away). I agree the OSU powerplay, especially the 5 on 3 looked awful. It looked like they forced one option and made it very predictable rather than taking what the PK unit gave them. It will be interesting to see if Minnesota brings the same energy against Wisconsin in the finals.

There are definitely some difference in our PP and PP kill with coach Elander gone. Some aspects of them seems to have dropped off but lets not forget the skill level of last seasons defensemen who are gone now as a huge factor as well.

When did Coach throw the girls under the bus? I have been trying to find video of her postgame press conference, but have been unsuccessful. You don't happen to have a link, do you?

I read it on online. I think it was on the USCHO site like a summary of the two games
During the game today, the play-by-play announcer, Jay Wilson (a longtime Madison TV sports guy), said (as best I recall) something like Muzerall she felt like they team slumped after Minnesota tied it as two, instead or rallying back.

The Minn Star-Tribune article says :
We just couldn’t dig ourselves out of a hole that we put ourselves into,” said visibly frustrated Ohio State coach Nadine Muzerall, who deferred to her players for an opening statement during the postgame media conference. “I’m going to switch it up and let the players do an opening statement because I’m kind of still figuring out what happened,” she said.

In a few minutes of looking, I didn't manage to find video of that post-game Q-and-A.

-------------------

Adding, the Duluth newspaper with a much harsher quote:
“We couldn’t dig ourselves out of a hole that we put ourselves into,” Buckeyes coach Nadine Muzerall said. “The disappointing thing is we quit. I didn’t appreciate it because we did embarrass OSU and who we are and what we represent. If we’re going to lose, we’re going to fight if we lose. We’ll take it on the chin, but we never quit and we did that tonight.”

I think this is the article that Timothy A read. Coach M's quotes are toward the end.

I have also been looking. The rumor from a few different people today is that she also took the team bus to the hotel alone and then sent it back for the team...I don't know how true it is, but three people mentioned it when I asked if they saw her press conference.

from the Duluth News-Tribune's very excellent hockey reporter:
“We couldn’t dig ourselves out of a hole that we put ourselves into,” Buckeyes coach Nadine Muzerall said. “The disappointing thing is we quit. Thanks for the information, everyone. Thankfully, the season is not over. It will be interesting to see how the girls respond to this next weekend when they host an NCAA Regional. Will this be the beginning of the end or will they rally and play like they are capable of playing? Hopefully it's the latter, and not the former. The high school basketball coach at my old high school had a team in 1987-88 that started the season off 15-0, then was upset on the road by a fired-up conference rival, 65-62. After the game, the coach told the kids, "Forget your mistakes, but remember what they taught you." Think that applies here. The girls need to forget the mistakes, but they need to learn from them.

Final Score From Thursday, March 13th
St. Lawrence 4
Penn State 1

ECAC #3 vs. Atlantic Hockey #1

Advantage, ECAC. A rematch might play out differently. But on this occasion, St. Lawrence scored 3 goals in less than five minutes A fine way to close out the opening stanza. From there, the Saints controlled most of the rest of the game.

Penn State finally broke through in the 3rd Period. But it took a rare 6x3 Power Play/ Extra Attacker Goal to accomplish that. An empty netter at the end of regulation time restored the Saints's three goal advantage.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Tessa Janecke, Penn State
Tessa's reputation preceded her arrival at the OSU Ice Rink. Was #15 as good as advertised? For sure. Highly skilled, great anticipation, hard worker. Of course I could go on. Scoresheet-wise, Janecke had the primary assist on Kendall Butze's Goal, the lone PSU tally.

Couldn't help but notice that Tessa appeared to have a good luck ritual going at the end of warm-ups. The last Nittany Lion off the ice, she was going to exit after putting one last practice shot into the net. It missed. Janecke quickly remedied the situation by collecting another puck and burying that one in the top shelf. But was the missed shot a harbinger of a tough evening to come? Maybe. Or maybe I just have an overactive imagination. Still, I couldn't help but wonder.

#3 Star: Anna Segedi, St. Lawrence
First Line Center and shifty playmaker in the best sense of the word. The State of Ohio has a longtime marketing slogan proclaiming that Ohio is "The Heart Of It All." Anna was at the Heart Of The Three Goal Explosion, posting assists on both Abby Hustler goals. Segedi's +2 performance was topped only by Hustler.

#2 Star: Emma-Sofie Nordstrom, St. Lawrence
We're not talking Nordstrom Rack. No discount goaltending here. Emma-Sofie gave the Saints a top-of-the line performance. When located in a shopping mall, Nordstrom the retailer is usually the anchor store. Nordstrom the goalie was the Saints' anchor, largely controlling play in the St. Lawrence end. Calmly smothering pucks, Emma-Sofie's teammates followed up by winning 56.6% of the draws. Good business model.

In partial contrast, Penn State Goalie Katie Desa spent much of the evening fighting off challenging St. Lawrence Shots. Katie didn't do badly at all, posting 23 saves. But Desa was outplayed by Nordstrom.

Ultimately Penn State denied Emma-Sofie's shut out bid. Still, it took all but four seconds of the two man advantage to reach that goal. In the end, Nordstrom had 32 saves on 33 shots. The 6x3 goal was the only blemish.

#1 Star: Abby Hustler, St. Lawrence
The St. Lawrence Sniper. Shooting with pace and deadly accuracy, Abby had the first and third goals for the Saints. Hustler's +3 Game led all players. If the Buckeyes hope to prevail Saturday night, they would be well advised not to lose track of Abby Hustler.

Confidential To The Visiting Fans: Nice turnout by both fanbases. Good on you for supporting both your team & Women's Hockey in general.
