Ohio State - 2014/2015

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Well they did have a much better team from the standpoint of they were deeper in scoring than this team is.

Scoring has been tough to come by this season, but if we can get solid D and goaltending this weekend, we will have a chance. That, and we have to minimize our penalties! We are finally playing some decent hockey! I am looking forward to the BIG Ten Tournament. I would not have been saying that last month. Credit Coach Rohlik and the kids for getting things figured out. Or maybe, as some have alluded to, it was just a matter of getting healthy. In any case, happy for the kids and coaching staff that they are having some success. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

As far as minimalizing penalties coach needs to stress mental discipline.
You'll always get the bad calls and sometimes you have to hold or hook when it's the only way to stop an opponent from scoring.
But some players simply like to hit and at times it's part of the game to wear down opposing players but being smart in how you achieve this is essential.
When Healey drew a charging penalty last weekend it was obvious he came straight in hard & fast from outside the play directly at the guy he took out. A definite no-no that even I would have called simply because it was so blatant and he was lucky he wasn't ejected.
I enjoy watching a good hit as well as the next guy but it isn't about a payback or taking a guy out, it's about doing your job to help the team win and advance.
Take a bad penalty now and you may help end the team's season so it's time to grow up and play for the team.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Totally agree Hockeybuckeye. Sometimes you do have to take a penalty. A prime example is if a guy is on a breakaway or in the process of getting down the ice for a breakaway. Rather than letting a guy walk in for an easy goal, take the penalty and see if your PK can do their job and not allow the opposing team to get a goal. Hitting should be used to wear down the other team, but should not be done from behind where you are in danger of getting a five-minute major or 10-minute major. This is the type of discipline that has been missing at times this season, and at inopportune times. The coaching staff definitely needs to get these guys playing disciplined hockey if we want to be successful this weekend. If we can play disciplined hockey and get some scoring, we could make some noise. Unfortunately, we won't be going up. It's only a few hours up the road from here, but we just took a vacation to Toronto a couple weeks ago for the Clarkson Cup. We had some cash coming back, but we are saving it for a little road trip to Binghamton, NY in a week-and-a-half. We're heading up there to check out a Senators game. Gonna see Ryan Dzingel and Max McCormick! Mrs 86 is a BG grad and was hoping to see Andrew Hammond, but he's on a 10-0-1 run backstopping the big club, so, don't think he is going to be back in Binghamton any time soon! Told her to leave her BG Hockey sweaters here and just pack the OSU Hockey sweaters!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Nice job by the Bucks today with a 3-1 win over Penn State. Christian Frey was solid in net and goals were scored by Nick Schilkey, Justin DaSilva, and David Gust. Let's keep it going against the Gophers!

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Minnesota won't go as easily as Penn State. They'll be fresh and looking to payback that last loss we gave them. Just wonder how sore & tired we'll be for that game.
If we do get past them will it just be a repeat of last year where we'll start strong and then the tank runs dry before we can seal the deal?

The one big difference this year will be minnesota is playing for their season. It is possible that they make it with a loss tomorrow but it's not a lock. Very nice game today although I didnt like the second period to many turnovers gave penn state life.

So is that our strategy, play hard for the lead in the 1st, cruise in the 2nd and drain the tank in the 3rd?

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Just saw on twitter that John Markell is applying for the OSU women's HC job...........uh.....

I was told by someone in the media (not going to say who) that Markell is not a serious candidate for the job ... thankfully. That would be just like our athletic department, though, wouldn't it? Yeah, let's get our women's program headed in the right direction ... by hiring a guy we fired from the men's job five years ago. Not to turn this into a women's thread, but our athletic department really needs to make a home run hire with that position. Anything less than that is not an option right now.

I don't think you should have fired Osiecki. Let's forget about what later happened that year and look at what OSU hockey did: #2 in the nation and had a massive win streak. Came out of nowhere.

The reason they couldn't keep it going could perhaps be they had to learn how to handle success? IDK, I just think something was there and could have happened if they stayed the course. Was very surprising he was out after 3 years.

Good lord, Red didn't even get to the NCAA Tournament until his 7th season. Some of his early teams needed to learn how to handle success. There was an infamous game early on in his career where Michigan was up 7-2 on Ferris State after 2 periods and wound up losing 9-7.

I didn't think we should have fired Osiecki either, but we're two years removed from that. What's done is done. It's just another reason why most feel our athletic department doesn't give a rip about our hockey programs. Osiecki wasn't unemployed for long, so that tells you all you need to know about our athletic department's commitment to putting winning hockey teams on the ice. I say hockey teams, plural, in this case. Who the athletic department brings in to coach our womens team, after forcing Nate Handrahan to resign, is the part two of our athletic department's commitment to hockey. The womens program needs a home run hire here (we have talent and a great recruiting class signed), and I am skeptical that our athletic department is going to deliver.

I wouldn't advise that against the gophers

They left it all out on the ice this evening. Folks can say what they want about coulda, shoulda, woulda...this team ended the season strong. How many games under Oz did we get scored on first and then completely collapse and give up? I wonder how different the outcome would have been this season had we had a healthy, strong bench Nov-Feb. Certainly the Big Ten rankings and seeds would have looked a lot different.

I'm proud of this team. Everyone knew what was on the line and they left it all on the ice. MN's only saving grace was Wilcox...without him that game could have easily been 6-3 OSU. We must find a way to solve tough goalies next season.

I'm sad to see this season end but am extremely optimistic about what we are building upon and what talent is coming in next season.

Also trying to decipher attendance figures at the Joe. We all know OSU fans don't travel, period. Was happy to see what The Scarlet Liners put together this season and take a somewhat cohesive group of fans to the Joe the past two days. Extremely tired of hearing about how great MN fans are and how well they travel....MSU/MI had more fans at GLI than they did fighting for their survival tonight for an NCAA bid...don't understand that at all.

In all fairness, he wasn't fired...OSU didn't renew his contract. I agree tho, WIH needs new blood and new leadership.

GreyGhost, yeah, you are correct on that, OSU didn't renew. They did the same thing with women's coach Jackie Barto, they didn't renew her. I expect the athletic department to wrap up the search for a women's coach soon.

Not meaning to beat a dead horse here but when your bosses are in your office waiting for you the Monday after the CCHA Championships and tell you you're done sure goes down as a firing in my book. Non-renewal is a technical irrelevance.

I agree with you on the injuries having an adverse effect on us. It's Coach Rohlik's job to recruit great players so that we're deep enough to sustain injuries and not allow those injuries to lead to catastrophic losing streaks. It's hockey, so everyone has injuries.

Either way I finally found out what happened. Lets just say your current coach is a better fit with OSU players and admin.
