Ohio State - 2014/2015

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Not to be a Monday morning QB but I believe we had a 2 goal lead in that game late in the 3rd and gave it up just like we have all this year. So is that coaching or lack of coaching?
You do make one good point Coach Handrahan is doing a much better job. It’s kind of sad that the better coach is coaching the girl’s team, even sadder the better games to watch over last week end where played at the girl’s rink.

You are correct, we did have a two goal lead, and with only five minutes to go in the game. I think that is a team thing, honestly. It's the coaching staff's job to put our kids in position to win, but then the kids have to execute. Clearly, the players didn't execute late in that game because it should have been a done deal ... two goal lead with five minutes to go in the game. I recall some using the excuse that the team was tired (I may have used that excuse, too, don't remember). OTOH, I'm not 100% sold on the tired excuse because the 2003-04 team played three games in three nights in the CCHA Tournament that season, and they still had enough left in the tank to beat Michigan 4-2 in the CCHA Tournament Championship Game, not to mention the two games they played before the title game both went into OT! In regard to Coach Nate, it's not sad if you are a big fan of OSU Women's Hockey! I completely understand what you mean, though. I have hope that someday we'll have a great coach running the men's program and getting them to the next level! I believe it can be done. We just need the right guy in here, and some support from the athletic department wouldn't hurt either!

Tanner put them up 2 goals with 7:52 left and in :48 the game was tied. Once Wisconsin tied the game you could see the Buckeyes had no legs left thats not an excuse it was reality. I dont blame that on the coaching staff the players have to finish that game. This team lacks that go to scorer that they had last year. With Ryan and Max leaving it left a void that no one has stepped in to fill. Playing with Max made it easy for Tanner and Greco to get scoring chances because so many teams keyed on Max. Like wise it was easy for guys to play with Ryan because of the same thing. Ive said it many times and will say it again there is no on ice leader for this team. They miss Gedig more than people think. That is not on the coaches either because someone on the ice has to take control of the team. This team reminds me of the 05-06 team that was picked 2nd in the CCHA coming off the title in 04 and runner up in 05. That team fell flat on their faces and finished near the bottom of the league losing at Ferris in the 1st round of the playoffs.

I am new here so forgive me if I did not do this right. I think it is clear that Rohlik has lost this team. You can see it in the uinspired play, d men that wont block shots, wingers who wont take the hit to get the puck out with not consequences. I saw somewhere that the PK and PP combined are last in the nation. That should not happen at a school like ours. As all you hockey guys know, PK is coaching and PP is recruiting so I give them a F in both categories. I hope it gets better but it generally does not when a coach loses a team. I heard from a parent last weekend that the coaches are constantly fighting with each other too where the players over hear them. That just should not happen in a program at a school like OSU. I thought that's why the canned Osieki? I agree with everyone on here, Lets go out and find the best coach money can buy and put this program on the national map. We certainly have the resources to do it.

Welcome! I have not heard about the infighting between the coaches, but it wouldn't surprise me. Having said that, though, I really enjoyed last night's game. The guys played hard, and they really seemed to neutralize Michigan's faster skaters (I'm a diehard Buckeye fan, but I can admit that Michigan has better skaters than we do). Our puck management skills are still less-than-mediocre, but we were able to score some timely goals last night, and another key was going 4-4 on the penalty kill. According to the recap on ohiostatebuckeyes.com, Michigan only got one shot on goal during their four power plays, which is amazing with their offensive firepower. It was a nice game by our guys. I do enough complaining on here, so I am giving credit where it's due on this one! Hopefully the guys can bring that effort the rest of the way.

Best game they have played this year by far. Still making the mistakes with turnovers costing them both michigan goals but Frey was there to make the big saves when called on. Michigan only getting 1 shot on 4 PP's well that is because the guys really sold out and blocked shots for once. Michigan is the better skating team but ohio state really made an effort to not let them get that going by not turning the puck over in the neutral zone very much. Now on Sunday we will see a very ****ed off Michigan team lets hope our guys can make that.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Nice to finally beat Michigan for the first time in 11 games and almost 4 calendar years. Also nice to beat them in Ohio for the first time since Dec. 2010

Stop sucking please. I would rather have you guys as the second team representing Ohio than bg. They are falling out pretty quick though.

Absolutely the best game OSU has played all season long. They stuck to it for 60 minutes. Hopefully they can take that on the road tomorrow.

The Scarlet Liners are having a Viewing Party tomorrow at Cbus Sports Pub, 2280 Henderson Road, Columbus, 43220. The game is at 5. Typically we all chip in for some Cousin Vinny's pizza. Cbus will be having some drink specials.

BG is definitely in meltdown mode right now, getting swept at home by Northern Michigan. They are going to play themselves out of an NCAA Tournament berth if they don't figure things out. And yeah, I would love to see us "stop sucking". It's sad that in just three short seasons of having division I hockey, Penn State has already passed us up. The problem here is that Gene Smith doesn't give a crap about hockey. He's the one that orchestrated what we are dealing with now by promoting an assistant coach who is clearly in over his head. Ohio State couldn't duplicate their performance from Friday night and dropped today's game in Ann Arbor, 5-2.

Michigan was a determined hockey team today. I dont think Ohio state played poorly but they still make the same mistakes that led to Michigan goals. I dont think you can blame Frey on 4 of the 5 goals. On to the Penn State series next week.

Well, let's not give up on that comparison just yet. No question that they're well ahead of us in this year's standings. But the head-to-head games next weekend are relevant to the question. There's also decent chance we'll get a game with them at the B1G Tournament. Those results will help me decide if they've really "passed us up."

And regardless of how this season ends, the long term question is wide open. Note that this is Gadowsky's 4th year of coaching at Penn State. He took over the coaching reins for the last year of the ACHA Club team in 2011-12. The current roster does list some seniors. I've got to believe that the players who signed on for that last year of club hockey were varsity caliber players who knew full well what was coming the following season. Also, a number of the key players for the current Nittany Lions are juniors. So despite the short history of the club, this may actually be a seasoned, veteran team.

It's not unheard of for a new program to enjoy this kind of success 3-4 years after a program begins. The question is whether they can sustain the success after the first wave of recruits graduates. Maybe PSU can do just that. But it is an open question IMHO.

In any event, I'm certainly looking forward to next weekend's games.

You make some good points, but I look at the standings and Penn State has double the points we do. Plus, we have 13 players that are juniors/seniors, so we're not exactly a young team ourselves. As others and myself have alluded to, I think Rohlik deserves an opportunity to right the ship. Time will tell whether he is the guy to get us to the next level or not. I don't believe it's necessary for the players to like the coach, and I don't think it's necessarily the best idea to hire a guy just because that's who the players want. Then again, the timing of the Osiecki firing didn't leave the athletic department with many choices in that matter. If OSU continues to remain at or near the bottom of the league standings (Wisconsin could still pass us in the standings and put us in the BIG Ten Hockey cellar), the athletic department may need to bring in someone else to lead this program. There is no reason for Ohio State to be this bad in hockey, despite the lack of a hockey-only facility.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

You make excellent points as well; I wouldn't necessarily dispute anything in Post #192. I guess what I had in mind goes something like this:

When we were building the Schott, that led to an immediate uptick in recruiting. Those efforts culminated in the Hugo Boisvert class that led us to a Frozen Four. Basically, the Schott was perceived as college hockey's shiny new toy during its construction. After a few years, the luster wore off; the recruiting advantage didn't endure. Right now, the Nittany Lions and their new rink are the shiny new toy. Will that advantage endure? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Granted, the Schott is simply too big for a normal college hockey season in Central Ohio. They didn't make that mistake at PSU, so maybe they have a better shot at making the momentum last. But I still think that "flavor of the month" status is fleeting in the usual case.

Another example, this one from long ago: When the Northern Michigan program was new, they rapidly rose to the top. IIRC, in their 4th year they made it to what was then known as the Hockey Final Four. Did it last? Well, they've always been a credible program. And they did win it all in 1991. But I wouldn't call them a perennial contender for championships. They've had their ups and downs, as we've had.

Bottom line? Penn State has outperformed us this year, at least so far. But the long term trend is an open, complicated question.

I understand what you are saying, and since you put it that way, I can't necessarily disagree with it. Time will tell whether or not Penn State keeps this going. In an unrelated note, I finally looked at the box score from the Michigan game Friday night because I was curious about the attendance ... 6,896. I haven't looked at all the box scores or run numbers this season, but I would think that is one of the better attended games this season. My other guesses would be Miami and Bowling Green. 5,391 for the Miami game, 5,075 for the Bowling Green game, 8,156 for the Michigan game last month, and 5,617 at the Wisconsin game on 2/14. I need to run the numbers and see who is drawing better; OSU men's hockey or OSU women's basketball. Last year it was hockey, so I am constantly telling people who rattle my cage by saying "No one cares about hockey" that OSU Men's Hockey is the third most popular sport on campus, that only football and men's hoops outdraw our men's hockey team. I need to check the numbers this year to see if that is still true.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

Pgb, you're a prophet! You said something about seeing what happens when the two teams play against each other. The Bucks took game one tonight 5-3. I didn't see the entire game, but the part of the game I did see, it looked like the Buckeyes played a decent game tonight. Those two goals within :57 by Healey and Stork to put us up 5-2 were huge. Penn State got a late goal to make it 5-3, so Healey's goal ends up being the game-winner. Ok, I did the numbers, and I have to say, OSU Women's Hoops is third at this time, outdrawing OSU Men's Hockey by 57 persons ... 4,779 to 4,722. I still think Gene Smith and the athletic department should make more of a commitment to hockey, but I won't get started on that. Ohio State and Penn State hook up again tomorrow night at 7:00.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

In other news, I left BTN on and am watching Minnesota vs Michigan State. The announcers said something about Mike Reilly being one of the best defensemen in the country. Looked back at Mrs 86 and said, "His sister, Shannon, was better!" For those who don't know, Shannon played her college hockey for the Buckeyes!

I did have a good feeling going into this weekend, not that there's any profit in that.;) The Buckeyes now lead the season series 2-1. Next chapter unfolds tonight...

A couple of impressions:

1. Friday we saw some of the crisp passing we've been craving. Several of the goals were picture perfect.

2. Penn State certainly isn't shy about shooting the puck. The Buckeye keeper will need to be fully focused for the entire 60 minutes tonight.

Thumbs up! I will say the Reillys are a pretty amazing hockey family.

It wasn't perfect but they did enough right things to win the hockey game. I also thought the passing was much better than it has been most of the year. Turnovers and defensive miscues cost them 2 goals. Tonight they have to do a better job of getting pucks deep and make penn state go 200 feet. Penn state sure does like to shoot the puck from everywhere so u can't let them have the shirt route to the net. Going for the first sweep of the season tonight!

It would be nice to actually sweep someone. Hard to believe we have not swept anyone this season.

Re: Ohio State - 2014/2015

How sweep it is! The Buckeyes take the regular season series 3-1. Yeah, there will probably be a pretty important rematch during the first round at the Joe. But if only for a few hours, let's enjoy this weekend's results.

You know, it occurs to me that the Pep Band should designate a special song to celebrate sweeps. I realize that Battle Hymn of the Republic is taken. (MN) Maybe Stars and Stripes Forever? A few thousand of our closest friends waving State of Ohio pinions to the tune of that majestic march would be a pretty cool sight.

Note that our state flag is a pinion because it's a pennant with two points.
