Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

As far as I'm concerned those don't count. If they're giving out medals for ping pong, then they may as well let billiards, darts and competitive eating into the games.

If they do I am all ready in training for the Pizza eating competition.:)

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

I’m getting kind of annoyed by the amount of hype around the “most medals ever”.

No surprise that the two sports involved are swimming and gymnastics. Swimming has a lot of events; four different strokes (that are not for differerent folks :D), medley events, and relays, in a relatively compressed range of distances, none (except maybe the 1500 meters) that is so taxing that you can’t enter several medal events.

In gymnastics, there are four apparatus events, the team event, and the all around. You’re pretty much automatically entered in two, and probably in three or more.

In other disciplines it’s much harder, the extreme being decathlon. They have to train for ten events as disparate as 100 meter dash, shot put, and pole vault, and at the end of the day (actually two days) the winner get one lousy medal, even if he won more than one of the individual events.

Nothing against Phelps or Latynina. They’re the most medaled swimmer and gymnast, respectively. But to use medal count to compare them to athletes in other sports is unfair to the athletes in the other sports.

Very thoughtful post. Always thought someone who could win the gold in the decathlon and repeat in 4 years should get more credit. Also when they total the countries team medal count-team sports that can compete in 7 or more games(that last hours at a time) count as one medal while some other events last a few minutes and a country can seep and get 3 medals. it is all relative.

So you want a job with NBC, it seems.

The horse died yesterday morning on this subject, the buzzards has been picking at the bones since the afternoon. There's nothing left to beat on.
Good thing all of us can ***** and moan in real time.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

interesting brackets in women's soccer knockout rounds: the anglo-saxon teams are all on one side of the bracket!

US vs New Zealand winner plays Great Britain vs Canada winner to get to the finals.

If anyone (else) is curious, on the other side, the Sweden vs France winner plays the Brazil vs Japan winner to get to the final. Brazil's surpise loss to Great Britain in pool play now leaves them facing the defending World Cup champion just to get to the semi-finals, and France is one of the best women's teams in the world right now.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Of course we have a women's field hockey team, but we probably didn't even try to field a men's field hockey team. Fracking Title IX...

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Blame lacrosse. The guys that would play field hockey likely play that instead. It's a pretty similar idea that doesn't exist elsewhere because the Iroquois invented it instead of Europeans.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Why would men want to play field hockey? It's a woman's sport, just like kitchen cleaning.

I know some guys that want to play field hockey, but weren't able to because it wasn't offered for men, and I assume their school did not wish to cross gender barriers.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Unless we feel that with the total volume of posts and reminders on NBC that somehow Jordan will get into the overall final....

There are no gymnasts from Jordan competing....:D

The US has a men's field hockey team it just didn't qualify for the Olympics.

Love the attitude.

It only a women's sport here in the US. In the rest of the world it's more popular with men than women. My wife's HS team had a boy on it. The only requirement was he had to wear the same uniform, which part of it was a kilt. :)

The club team I currently play with has about a 25% / 75% ratio of men to women on it. Obviously coed and thank god we don't wear kilts. ;) Myself and two other guys are American born the rest are from either Europe or India.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Don't say that to the Indians, Sri Lankans, or Pakistanis! They play for keeps!

Not mention the Aussies and the Dutch men. The best player I have ever seen play live was from the Netherlands. He was simply awesome.

Speaking of which I really hope that both the Dutch teams make it into the gold medal matches. I would like to see them play live.

Well, we'd have to qualify for one... Last time I checked the roster was mostly Californians

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

So, you're suggesting that on a message board, in a thread about the Olympics, we don't discuss one the of the bigger controversies of the Olympics? You do realize that this IS THE EXACT REASON THIS THREAD EXISTS!

This is where we ***** about something an others ***** about us *****ing about it. :D
