Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Re: Official XXX Olympics Results - Spoilers Welcome

Two gold medals in a row today! First women's water polo, now women's soccer!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Awesome game by Hope Solo. Three huge, world-class saves, especially on the breakaway at the end.

US now has <strike>38</strike> 39 golds to 37 for China, with women's basketball and women's volleyball teams already in to the finals, and the men's basketball team likely heading there too. Tomorrow's game against Argentina promises to be a real grudge match.

We have exceeded our gold medal total from 4 years ago-even without softball. We will undoubtedly not reach the 110 total medals won last time but overall this has just been a very successful competition for the USA.

We didn't win gold in softball four years ago, either. Lost to Japan for the first non-gold ever. Medal ceremony on now for women's soccer. I guess Canada won the bronze medal.

Three for three! Ashton Eaton with gold in the Decathlon!

Field events made it even better, the US swept the Triple Jump! Christian Taylor takes the gold over Will Claye.

The 800m final was sort of close- the US runners finished 4 and 5, so the middle distance is getting good, while we can't do much in 200 and 400...

Yes, and also it's nice to see the rest of the world picking up more medals too. a very nice haul for Great Britain (51 so far)! Grenada's first-ever medal, and it's gold. Trinidad and Tobago get their second medal ever; Hong Kong as well; "Chinese Taipei" [i.e., Taiwan] wins two, Ireland wins gold in women's boxing, India wins bronze in women's boxing (a great story if you have a chance to read it, she is from a very poor part of the country and came back after giving birth to twins....). I like it much better when more countries have medal winners.

and a great Olympics for women in general, I'd say. First time ever that every country in attendance had at least one female athlete. Title IX, whatever else you might think about it, has helped US women do very well in international athletic competitions, which helps motivate other countries to train their female athletes better, which (one hopes!) helps improve the status of women everywhere.

I am not sure but it looks like we will pick up zero medals in men's boxing. Years ago we would be able to get something in several of the weight classes.

Boxing has really become a Clutterbuck and has completely fallen off my radar. Used to love watching Olympic boxing....

For many years, any thing we got over 400 meters was just gravy (and very unexpected). We are making some real gains and challenging Ethiopia and Kenya in events that we could not even qualify for.

Conspicuously low in the medal count is Germany. Also interesting is medal count in soccer. North America 3; Asia 2; South America 1; Europe 0
