And, you'd think with Rio coming up in 2016, that baseball would be one of the showcase sports for South America.

Apparently it is. I wouldn't have thought so either. Must be all those missionaries in Africa.

Tug of war MUST be returned. Any sport where the same country wins the gold 4 straight times should be retired for one cycle.

Gabby Douglas wins the GOLD in the All Around. Aly Raisman tied for third but due to some new tiebreaker rules, she does not get a bronze. Boo.

This was just stupid. They both should have gotten Bronze. And what is the tie breaker? Raisman had a higher score than Mustafina in qualifying.

Awesome finish between Russia and Brazil in mens hoops. Brazil goes up 2 with 6.1 left but Russia hits an impossible 3 with 2 ticks left.

But think of the beautiful moments we'd be denied. Certain older posters may recall when the Mexican kid won a swimming gold in '68 the place erupted in one of the longest, loudest celebrations ever. He was taking a victory lap around the deck when a sombrero came flying out of the stands. He put it on and the crowd went mad. Beautiful.

I have always differentited between "politics" and "nationalism" at the games. The joy in Lake Placid and around the country after we beat the soviets is "nationalism." Giving the Russians three tries to beat the US in basketball is "politics." And having the judgement of the refs upheld on a 3-2 vote of a committee that included three Soviet bloc countries is also politics.

According to Wikipedia, the tiebreaker is to exclude the lowest of the 4 scores. Mustafina had a 45.933 and Raisman had a 45.366 just counting their 3 best routines on the day. That makes no sense--if it's an "all-around," the tiebreaker should still involve all 4 events. The qualifying score would be the most obvious tiebreaker, but because Mustafina's worst routine (13.633 on the balance beam) was worse than Raisman's worst routine (14.200 on the balance beam), Mustafina gets the bronze.

Also note that Raisman scored better than Mustafina on 3 of the 4 events.

Well, if she had a lower score but the same average, then clearly she made up for it somewhere else. By eliminating the "outlier" they are, in effect, rewarding the person whose scores are the most consistent across the 4 events. That seems like a reasonable definition of a "better" all-around gymnast.

It rewards a gymnast who is slightly above average in 3 events but bad at one rather than the gymnast who is slightly below average in 3 events and amazing at one event - you're better off being good at most of the events rather than amazing at a single event.

USA beats the host in Water Polo. Tony Azevedo started the game with a natural hat trick, and the Americans never looked back.

But then wouldn't you want to take the person who was better in 3 of the 4 events?

Mustafina 15.233 + 16.100 + 14.600 + 13.633 = 59.566
Raisman 15.900 + 14.333 + 15.133 + 14.200 = 59.566
(both in order of vault - uneven bars - floor exercise - balance beam)

Mustafina was slightly below average in 3 events and amazing at one event (the uneven bars); Raisman was slightly above average in 3 events but below average in one event (the balance beam). The gymnast whom you say should have been rewarded by the system was not.

They used Pair Wise instead of KRACH (or was it the other way around)??
