Correct. If Brazil win, they will have 9 points and at least a +7 in goal differential (US is +6), so they will get the #1 seed. If Great Britain wins, they will need to win either 4-2 (or 5-3, 6-4 and so on) or by 3 goals in order to surpass the U.S. If the game ends in a draw, then the U.S. will be the #1 seed.

Right, but the knockout stage has a pre-determined format. In the quarterfinals, the US will play Canada if Cameroon can upset New Zealand by three or less goals and New Zealand / Cameroon otherwise. In the semifinals, the American women will play whomever wins the Brazil / UK group (unless they get upset by Canada / North Korea).

So, assuming no upsets in the quarters, it is guaranteed that the #1 and #2 overall seed from group play will face each other in the semifinals.

Phelps misses gold by .05 of a second in 200M butterfly, takes silver.

The medal record is tied. One more medal and he is the most decorated Olympian of all time in any event.

US takes gold in the Men's 4x200 free relay, making Phelps the most decorated Olympic Athlete ever. Medals in all 4 swimming finals today for the US.

You want to see close? Check out the finish for third in the women's 200 meter freestyle. Missy Franklin should have kept her fingernails a tad longer for today.:eek:

Wow, 4 badminton teams DQ'd for trying to lose to get an easier path to a medal. I think South Korea, Indonesia and China were the countries involved.

The crazy part is the teams were playing against each other. That had to be some horrible badminton to watch.

Hungary comes from behind to overtake China in women's water polo. Sounds like we may have a rough time with Spain today, but the game is still to be played.

Wow is right- it was covered during Morning Edition this morning, and I never expected the badmiton federation to actually do something about it.

I saw some highlights of the badminton matches that were being tanked... It was no question what was going on.... There were several serves that went right into the bottom of the net... I'm not an expert, but I don't think serving is that tactical in badminton... I'm sure it's something like an 90%+ success rate for athletes at this level... These serves weren't even close...

Badminton in the Olympics? Who knew? Thankfully the IOC hasn't put rhythmic gymnastics on the program yet.

Thisjust in to NBC Sports. Rhythmic gymnastics will become an Olympic sport at the 1984 games in Los Angeles
