Oh...and I have TWO of the Easter Gates. What a waste of the gold eggs.

Nintendo continues its slow death. A total of 2.72 million Wii U sold vs. the original 9 million forecast... Yikes.

They have god tier IP and name recognition (Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc.) so they'll keep soldiering on, but they'll likely pull a Sega sooner rather than later. The 3DS might have a chance to survive depending on how saturated the smartphone market gets.

If they're smart, they dump the console division or spin it off. Keep plugging the handheld and game market. Can you imagine Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, or Metroid on PS4/XBox? All of them would be monstrous releases. They could turn a profit within a few quarters I would think.

They might even think about keeping a hardware development division around as it relates to peripherals for their games on other consoles. The Wii controller was one of the biggest evolutionary leaps we've seen in "HMI" consumer technology in a long time. As were the N64 controller and rumblepak for that matter. Both featured new technologies (or were effectively co-released in the case of the analog stick and Sega Saturn) that are almost requisite in controllers today. I guess you could even lump Mario Paint's mouse and the Nintendo's zapper. But I digress...

Their handheld dominance is nothing to back away from and they have the IPs and developer support to keep it going. They have a small but very devoted fanbase. They're also still a force in the Japanese market.

Problem is, the handheld and Japanese are almost meaningless in the scheme of things. They've lost the hardcore gamers and the casuals bailed on them after the Wii. The problem I see is that they're stubborn. Look at the article, they see Mario Kart 8 as something that will push them back to relevance. Maybe it'll increase sales, but it's not gonna put them on equal terms with Sony or Microsoft. They might get it if they reveal something mindblowing at E3, but I doubt they will.

I don't see them pulling out of the console market though. Too much pride in them to do it.

The problem for them is that they could have done a higher quality console similar to what play station/microsoft have done and still done their cheesy games on it, while allowing the likes of mario, zelda, metroid, etc to grow with the caliber of console... I honestly enjoyed my wii and many of the games on it. I still get it out when I have nieces and nephews over...in fact, thinking about it now, I should probably pull out big brain academy and start playing regularly with my wife cause I get to play a game and she should enjoy it too...

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

The Wii U did ONE thing right that makes me still consider (on at least a monthly basis) running down to Best Buy to pick it up: Earthbound on Virtual Console.

<strike>The main knock on the ported game is that they couldn't reuse the music due to copyrights.</strike>

Nix that, I looked it up and it sounds like it's an exact port. Interesting...

At this point, with the wii/Nintendo its not even the hardware... There's just nothing worth buying in sufficient quantity if you are older than 12. Many of the legacy franchises have been dumbed down in the name of user friendliness. Then you've got that massive dual screen gamble. They went to too small of a niche.

I get it that Nintendo doesn't want the latest blood dripping monster game, but you need variety and you can't let your franchises go to slack (those new Mario games... Ugh... Vanilla.)

They don't see themselves with ability to compete with Sony and MS. They feel they have to keep it cheap to hit their main demographics: kids and families. Because of that, they don't run stuff with good specs. Because of that no third party developers want to work with them. That is what is ultimately killing them. Because their consoles are harder to develop for, and because they are * to work with, they have no games beyond their own. And Mario and Zelda and Metroid ain't doing it anymore, because like Patman said, they've gone downhill and they're not that good. Compare that to Sony's stuff, Uncharted, Infamous, The Last of Us. Nintendo has nothing of that caliber.

There are two reasons the Wii sold as much as it did: a) It was a novelty. b) The Virtual Console.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

The last console I bought (not counting handhelds) was the N64. But I sure love my 3DS.

Family Guy

Almost done unlocking Brian and Dr. Hartman.

Simpsons

Just got the faberge egg after a week. Noticed they added buying 4500 gold eggs for 50 donuts.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

I'm so "meh" about the Simpsons right now. THis event has just taken every ounce of my will to play the game.

I just got my first faberge egg yesterday myself. EA must be reading the message boards for Tapped Out feedback. Nobody likes this update; the characters with the greatest potential for entertainment value are the most difficult to get. I had ~250 donuts when the update came, used 50 for the golden eggs. I ended up getting Sherry Bobbins on the 7th or 8th try using those eggs, but her quests haven't started yet. I have a feeling that they've also updated their random number generator has been modified to give people more of what they want.

As to dx's comment, I've noticed that 3 of my 50 neighbors have stopped playing since the second week or so of the Easter/Whacking Day update.

Getting there myself. This game crashes more than Helen Keller in the Indy 500. I cannot collect my buildings and jobs, assign new jobs, take care of Krustyland, and visit friends without the game crashing at least twice along the way. It's gotten particularly egregious since the Easter update and since I upgraded to KitKat.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

I finally got Pastor Sean the other day. And this morning...what did I get from likely the last prize box I'll be able to open? Yeah...it was another Easter Pond. :(

I have so many of those ponds and trees that I'll never use. And I keep getting fences - both those white brick ones and the pastel picket fense once. I'm never using them. As soon as I start to need some room, or this Easter update is over, I'm placing the fences I did use to get the 15 donuts into storage.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

I got a Banana Dictatorship last night.

I consider this a greater video game accomplishment than KOing Mike Tyson.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Happy news, Tapped Out players - today is the final day of the Easter event.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Simpsons update added Friendship level 9. Looks like the reward is finally tie-dye Lisa outfit.

5000 pts to unlock. Should take me about 8 days.
