Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close
Picked up the new Tomb Raider last week. I like the grittier, younger, Lara Croft much better than the over-bewbed older version we have had in the past.
Feels a lot like Uncharted series (which in turn may have copied other tomb raiders) in that you are a scientist/treasure hunter/etc. Collecting relics, documents, etc. as an aside to the story. A bit more quick time sequences than I like, but not totally overwhelming.
Still feels good to kill bad guys, there is a cover system, and the enemies don't just stand around waiting to be shot (for the most part). There is also a stealth kill and finisher system. Reasonable selection of weapons, and an upgrade system for both the character and her equipment.
Some of the set pieces are pretty dramatic feeling. For example (spoiler), early on in the game you get your foot caught in a bear trap. it's night time with a big storm (rain, lightning, wind). So while you are stuck wolves will jump out of the wild randomly and you have to kill them with your bow/arrow.
