Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Saints Row 4 trailer out. And you thought 3 went off the deep end. The insanity level is now at "standing in the corner beating itself in the head with a ball peen hammer"

Basic plot: Saints have taken over the US presidency and the world, aliens invade and put them in a computer simulation of Steelport to stop them. Yeah.

Expect basically The Matrix with gangstas and furry costumes. Superpowers up to and including telekinesis.

Personally, I hope they flesh out Steelport some more and beef up the customization again. SR2 was just deeper on both counts.

Has anyone here been following the development of the new gaming system Ouya? I just learned of it by through this article: http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/12/tech/gaming-gadgets/ouya-julie-uhrman-sxsw/index.html?hpt=hp_bn5

I'm not sure about the idea. I think it's a wait-and-see thing for me. $100 for a gaming console and you can play games without shelling out $60 or more for the chance? There's promise to it, but game quality is a definite concern on this business model.

Depends how many developers sign on. iOS and Android games are exploding right now. If they land a few big titles that you can't get on a phone, they'll do decent.

Strangely, these were the exact circumstances that led to the entire North American video game market crashing and burning in 1983. Everyone and their brother was cranking out atrocious shovelware with no quality control to score a quick million, with a bazillion platforms all offering basically the same stuff resulting in a flooded market and consumers throwing their hands up in despair. Fortunately, a lot of the QC can now be mitigated by the consumer through things like online word of mouth, Youtube, etc, plus it costs $5 as opposed to $60.

If one has never even seen a gameplay video of a Saints Row game, hears about it all the time, and is somewhat interested now, what's your advice?

Do you have to start with the first? How many hours of gameplay can be expected (my standard for games is 60+)?

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

There's a copy of SimCity sitting on my dining room table. Probably won't even bother installing it for a couple weeks.

Saying "I've heard dreadful terrible things about that game" would be a huge understatement.

And that's even besides Kluwe's one man crusade to burn down EA due to the game.

You can miss SR1 with no major repercussions. It's a pretty decent GTA clone, but hadn't developed any real personality yet (it was designed for the XBox because at the time GTA was a Playstation exclusive.)

SR2 is the best in the series. It takes place 5 years after SR1, but the game kinda intends for you to start over anyway so it's no huge deal. The game starts to run with the wackiness here as well. The personality starts to develop, deeper customization, deeper city, lots of play modes, heavy on exploration, overall the most emphasis on fun. At the time, GTA was going the "serious interactive movie" route, so SR realized they'd never keep up with that and went down the "screw going to a restaurant, let's go ride a 4 wheeler through the mall on fire" route. It actually worked really well. People liked the self-aware fun route.

SR3 built on the self-awareness by turning the crazy up to 11. However, they kinda overdid it and the game became a parody of itself. The emphasis on "crazy" kinda takes away from the fun that 2 was. More linear, less emphasis on freedom/exploration, more on cramming as much crazy crap into the main story as they can. New city, not quite as deep, some modes pushed to the side or cut entirely, customization takes a hit as well.

tl;dr: 1 is decent but skippable, 2 is the best and the most fun to play, 3 has the craziest stuff but is more linear and kinda takes away from the fun.

ETA: Better summary. SR2 has no problem with you dressing up as a dominatrix and beating people with a three foot dildo. SR3 FORCES you to dress up as a dominatrix and beat people with a three foot dildo.

1st SimCity i've never had any inclination to play. Toss up between SimCity 2000 and Simcity 3 as best in series. Not a huge fan of 4.

Officially can not wait for the PS4 - my controller on my PS3 is going to shyt.

SR2 is pretty good, I had fun playing it when I got as free download on PS+. I got SR3 with Gamefly and sent it back after a few days, just couldn't have fun with it though I may give it another shot.

Resubscribed because USCHO doesn't know how to implement a mobile interface.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VII: The 7th Generation Comes To A Close

Saying "I've heard dreadful terrible things about that game" would be a huge understatement.

I ended up installing it last weekend. Couldn't play it the first day, did the tutorial the second day, signed off, and couldn't get in after that, couldn't get in the next day, played for 30 minutes the next day, couldn't get on the next day, decided to go back to waiting for a few weeks until this **** is fixed.

edit and rant: I should add the only reason I installed it was because EA is bribing players with a free game if they were signed up by a certain date. Although whatever two year old game I end up getting is not going to convince me to buy another game from Maxis. I was so excited for this game, and it is such a let down. After Sim City Societies, this is the second stinker in a row. It's starting to influence my memories of earlier SimCity and Sims games, which I really enjoyed. I won't remember playing those for hours and having fun, but will remember this.

EA blew this. Big time. It may be one of the bigger flops in recent history. This overzealous DRM crap (which will be defeated soon if it hasn't already) is only costing the developers money, it's detrimental to the gameplay experience, and it doesn't result in the pirates actually buying the game (a common myth is that every copy of a game downloaded is money lost - purely false because it assumes the person downloading it would have bought it in the first place).

EA CEO John Riccitiello has resigned according to the tweeter machine.

Nevertheless, pirating is still wrong. I can't say I never did it, but i don't excuse it as somehow being ok simply because the publishers suck.

I don't think I said that, but I agree. The point I'm making is the publishers are spending all this time and money trying to fight piracy and it's just not working. This latest game can't even be played without being online to pimp Origin. SimCity is the latest in a long line of debacles that have turned EA into a complete laughing stock.

I still have to say they do a hell ove a job with sports games. :)

Do they? THeir NBA game blows. Madden is a festering pile of ****. FIFA and NHL are good but getting stale. Fast. Baseball, if they even have a game, plays third fiddle to The Show and 2k.
