Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Rift is 33% off this weekend at Steam. Apparently even though its a WoW clone, its still pretty fun to play and does have some differences.

I am staying away from monthly subscription based games (other than maybe trying KoToR). But hey, maybe you like them.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So, I'm really loving GT5. Even am getting into the B-Spec part of it (never have done that on any other version). Couple questions, probably dumb ones:

1. In B-Spec, is it better to constantly talk to your driver, or just make adjustments when absolutely necessary?
2. How the heck do you get a good truck? I've only found 2, both in the online dealerships, but the one I bought (the funky GM one that I hate, but it worked for one of the truck races) doesn't have a good enough top speed, even after pretty much maxing it out.

I love the seasonal races. Even if you finish 6th, that's some big money for what you race.

Edit: and the French car I have (Hommel or something like that)....JFC is that thing touchy. You breathe on it wrong and it skids out of control.

Don't even bother trying to win B-Spec until you've gotten your driver up to level 10. He is a complete and total moron until then. Just leave him alone and let him finish races. You still rack up a decent amount of XP for each race.

The upside of this is, once you unlock more B-Spec drivers, you can put a level 1 driver in a monster car in an expert race and watch him gain 8 levels at once.

2. How the heck do you get a good truck? I've only found 2, both in the online dealerships, but the one I bought (the funky GM one that I hate, but it worked for one of the truck races) doesn't have a good enough top speed, even after pretty much maxing it out.

All the trucks suck. You basically have to buy the biggest one available, max the transmission out, and tune the gears about halfway up top speed (not too high or you'll accelerate so sluggishly you'll never make it there.)

1. So wait, I don't have to stay with my initial driver? The unlocked ones are "better" from the get-go? Sweet! I have some beefy cars (backed up by the fact that my only B-Spec driver is undefeated in about 20 races). It's the Russian guy.

2. Ok, so it does involve manual tuning/gear ratio crap. F that.

Kind of. You unlock additional empty slots, which you can fill with drivers. The new drivers start at level 1. However, you can enter them in the higher level races right away and watch them jump like 8 levels after one race.

To enter an event you only have to have at least one B-Spec driver who matches that level. You don't have to use him.

And admit it already. You spent an hour trying to get the random name generator to spit out a funny name. I got T. Gay, R. Petty, and A. Frank. Not kidding.

2. Ok, so it does involve manual tuning/gear ratio crap. F that.

It's actually not that hard to tune gear ratios. There's one setting called "Final Gear Ratio." That's a good spot for beginners to start since it affects all the gears pretty equally. If you want to sacrifice top speed to favor quicker acceleration, slide it to the left. If you want to sacrifice quick acceleration to hit a higher top speed, slide it to the right. Don't go too far at first. Try three or four clicks one way, and see how that works for you.

This is almost required on the muscle cars. You'll sacrifice next to no acceleration (it just roasts the tires and goes to waste anyway) and you'll be able to go like 180. The engines start to make some pretty glorious whining noises at those speeds. The Buick Special sounds exactly like the Tasmanian Devil.

Actually, never mind, I got that completely wrong. Your "master" B-Spec level is completely separate from their individual levels. That master level is the one that matters. Meaning if your master B-Spec level is 10, and all you have is a 7, you can still enter him.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

1. For B-Spec, I had no idea what I was doing, and thought it had a set number of drivers, hence going with an intimidating nationality. :o

2. I heart the Buick Special. Too bad it corners like MNS hitting on a woman. Straightaways/slow casual corners are its friend.

Get a B-Spec driver up to level 6, then max out a Mazda Miata/MX-5/Eunos (all the same car) and have him win the NR Roadster Challenge I think it's called.

The prize car from that 1) looks dead sexy 2) will curbstomp the holy hell out of anything it's allowed to enter. You can put a level 1 B-Spec guy in it and he'll farking lap people. You can even win against GT/Le Mans cars.

Eventually, buy the Corvette ZR1 and give it the Race Mod package. There's a race at Indy it can enter which is good for grinding quick money and XP.

Yeah there are some hilarious names for B-Spec drivers and opponents. I beat M. Schumacher by 2 laps, true story.

Fully Customizable Suspension should be one of the first purchases for almost any car. Never touch the individual gears, just use Final Gear.

Buy the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner, tune it up a bit, mess with the gears a bit, and draft like mad on the Daytona race.

Tune-up the car a bit, use cheap engine upgrades and you should be able to win and gain more money. Most importantly it's the XP you get.

Red Bull X2010, don't talk about touchy until you get to drive this beast:

I would just like to reiterate for Brent: that video is in no way faked or anything. It really is that fast. It's nearly impossible to drive with a controller.

Basically, they sat down with Sebastian Vettel (F1 driver) and a bunch of F1 engineers, and together designed a concept car that wasn't bound by any rules of any racing organization, just to see what was possible. If a car can pull one sideways G, that's pretty agile handling. The X1 can pull EIGHT. That's past fighter jet territory and pushing up against the limits of what a human being can withstand without turning into goo.

The original concept had a farking 1500 HP GAS TURBINE on it.

Here's one at full speed.

That car looks fun.

I repeat: I'm NOT messing with the gears. I don't know crap about ratios, and I'm too lazy to learn.

And I've only not won a couple seasonals I've entered, but that is mostly due to me still getting used to some of the cars/tracks.

Basically like Twitch said there's a setting called "Final Gear Ratio". It should just a slider with an MPH mark, to left it'll accelerate better but not much top speed, to the right it'll have higher top speed but slower acceleration.

If it's dummyproof, I may look into it.

And by the way, night racing? SUCKS.

Raced the seasonal Lamborghini at some Tarmac thing; started in daytime, ended at night the switch is about halfway through at 2.5 laps. Just before the switch I managed to be about 2 seconds ahead of everyone (you start about 11 seconds or so behind, in 12th place). Ended up falling back to 4th, and finally managing to eke out a .450 seconds win, overtaking the lead car in the final stretch.

It's just about time for me to start grinding for an actual race car, it's about the only races I haven't done (that I know about). Sitting at about 1MM right now, I think I need 20MM.

It's pretty dummyproof. There's a "reset to default" button if you screw something up.

Think of gear ratios as like the gears on your bike. You pedal 1st gear until your legs can't move any faster, then you shift up to 2nd, etc. What you're adjusting is how hard each gear is for your legs/engine to pedal. Turn a gear down and your engine will be able to pedal through it easier, but it won't get you as much power and speed. Turn a gear up and it'll be tougher to work through, but it'll generate you a lot more power and speed if your engine can handle it.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

L.A. Noire so far is pretty enthralling to play. Hard to put down. So I would say that's a positive.

Some car chases, gun fights, fist fights, and a lot of looking for clues and interrogating suspects. Plus a good 1940's vibe. I think you can even turn the game to all black and white if you want.

How "adult" is this game? Box says nudity, sexual themes, use of drugs.

All of the nudity is dead women who you inspect once and then won't see again. But there is a lot of blood, boobs, etc in each of those scenes.

I haven't noticed much else that was graphic in any way. They swear, there are flash backs to the war, etc.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I'm downloading my Xbox firmware update now (and secretly hoping for a brick).

Why in the world would you hope for this?:
