All that post made me think of was...

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Double post. PSN has annouced their North America customer appreciation package.

Link

Since I own both PS3 and PSP, I will get 3 free games out of it. Although the PS3 ones i would want most, I already own.

ETA: Amazon.com gold box deals today are video games.

Choose two free games from a list of five, none of which I've ever heard of? Meh.

What? You have never heard of ModNation Racers or LittleBigPlanet?

Are you living under a rock?

How nice of them to give away games from their 2007 collection.

No, but I also dislike paying for DLC and don't generally play much on consoles except sports games and sandbox games.

(Yes, I've read posts in here about LittleBigPlanet, but I still have no idea what it's about and nothing I read made it sound interesting to me.)

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

If you've never seen the Fox News segment on the first Mass Effect game, by all means google it or do a youtube search. It's freaking hilarious.
Oh I've seen it. Why I remember that whole hot coffee debacle.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So, if I'm reading this right, if I've already logged in and reset my password then I should be fine, the problem is that someone else could potentially reset my password again?

Sounds about right. Somebody could reset your password, then access your account and do all kinds of fun things under "your" new password.

I was trying to reset my password and got an error, then I stumbled across that article. Wonder if there will be an additional peace offering from Sony after this fiasco.

Re: Baseball game question

Microsoft is rolling out their DVD drive update starting this week, but in some 360's, it renders the drive unable to read discs. The good news is they can detect this error over Live and will reach out to you through email to offer a brand new 250GB slim once you jump through some hoops. I'm hoping mine bricks when I download the update.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Someone tl;dr this, work doesn't like the link.

I logged on and changed my password as soon as PSN came back up. Am I okay?

According to reports on Nyleveia.com, Eurogamer, and NeoGAF, Sony's PlayStation Network password reset system-the one just put in place after the PSN hack-has been compromised, allowing hackers to change a PSN password if they know your email and date of birth. Exactly the sort of information that was released in the original hack.

Sony has taken the password reset system offline. Kotaku has reached out to Sony for comment.

Update 1: The good news (as pointed out by NeoGAF's "Metalmurphy") is that if your account was compromised, you should have gotten an email from PSN that says your password has been reset.

Update 2: An official community moderator on the EU PlayStation forums notes the following services are offline:

PlayStation.com
PlayStation forums
PlayStation Blog
Qriocity.com
Music Unlimited via the web client
All PlayStation game title websites

Update 3: This is the purported exploit as provided to Kotaku. As PlayStation services are now offline, this exploit is no longer able to be executed:

The prodecure is as follows:
1) Navigate to : https://store.playstation.com/accounts/reset/resetPassword.action?token (this is normally, via email, https://store.playstation.com/accounts/reset/resetPassword.action?token=YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY with the y's being a unique token) - do not enter the code at this point.
2) Open a new tab in firefox, and go to fr.playstation.com (other pages will work too most likely), and click Login (Connexion)
3) Click Recover password
4) Enter the email and date of birth of the target account
5) Click continue, then on the confirmation page, click "Reset using E-mail"
6) Switch back to the original tab, and enter the code, then click continue
7) You will now be asked to enter a new password for the target account

Added both link and text since I don't know what part you can't use.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I knew this day would come eventually. My computer doesn't run The Witcher 2 well enough for it to be playable. I made it through the opening couple cut scenes but it was too brutally slow to play. I might be able to get away with just getting a newer video card, but computer parts are so cheap I might as well just build a whole new PC all together. I also realized I am out of HDD space, so time to upgrade that as well.

This one has lasted me a good 4+ years.

Yeah...I got my last one specifically because it was cheap but upgradeable (came with duo core, could up it to a quad core, came with 4 gigs of ram, could expand up to 32, extra PCIe slots if I wanted to run multiple video cards in SLI mode, plenty of bays for extra hard drives, etc.). The only flaw in my plan was the motherboard itself frying after about 18 months.

So now I think I'm using what's leftover from my extra paycheck next month after I get a TV and blueray player to start over. Just need to get a new m/b, CPU (probably an i5), and ram. May spring for Windows7 while I'm at it.

Looking at the ideal top end items, the Motherboard/CPU, Video Card and Memory would run me about $2100.

Might be worth it at that price to just go through Alienware/Dell and have them build it out for me at around $4200 (+tax). But that would include all the other parts and a warranty.

Never buy ideal top end items. You should be able to make one for ~1000$ if you splurge on a couple things.

Normally I don't. But I don't really want to run 2x video cards (say the gtx 550/60's 1gb) if I can just run 1x gtx 590 3gb. Also no reason to get the 570 or 580 as they are incremental increases (1.5 gb).

I'm just in the thought phase, so plenty of time to hash out what is 'worth it' to me.

Icreases in memory do not always mean 2x the performance. A mid ranged graphics card is only minorly "worse" than the top end in performance while being vastly superior in bang for the buck. Honestly outside of the old radeon 9700 pro when it was released there hasn't been a top end card since that's been worth the price when compared to a mid ranged card. Especially when you see the price drop 3-6 months down the line.

Here's a budget one I came up with a month or so ago.
