Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

The way I handle strangers (of any age) is that I will friend them for a few days or a week if we are playing the game, but I delete them off my friends list after that. I like to keep the list to people I know.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

A friend of mine has his warrior guy maxed out with skills and fame and is at level ~100 for the infinite dungeon. Has some enchantments offering +600HP.
Was just reading Torchlight is coming to Xbox Live in February (no PS3 version planned). So if you aren't a Steam/PC gamer you can still enjoy the game. Link

Hopefully it will be set at under $10, since part 2 is coming out for PC this Spring as well.

So what is Nintendo's target audience with that? Right now it seems like mostly kids (7-14) are the ones that the DS targets... Do many adults go for the DS? At that price I would hope that they are going after the 15-30 y/o crowd...

it is probably still the younger crowd. price point doesn't really matter there because a kid who wants something bad enough complains to his parents until he gets it. the key in that demographic is marketing and creating demand. it is when people become more responsible consumers, parting with their own money for items, do they start to consider th price of "luxury" items.

Picking it up after work.

What are the must-haves from LBP1? JJ already told me about the Metal Gear Solid paintball gun.

Pirates of the Caribbean pack as well.

I just got my LBP2 a couple of days. Got the Collector's Edition for my Wife (she wanted the Bookends, they are pretty cool). Really happy to see that all our stuff from LBP carried over as we had almost everything unlocked (with a lot of cool stuff) plus the MGS and PotC packs. The new stuff in 2 makes it absolutely sweet, add in the fact it's a game my wife is willing to play with me makes it awesome.

I enjoyed it, so here's a series of videos on Minecraft from when it was still in alpha and moving through to the first beta. (Occasionally some naughty language is used)

Minecraft is a blast. There are people who do some crazy things in that game...I am not one of them.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So Dungeons seems kinda cool, but not $39.99 cool.

I have no idea how deep the gameplay is, but the description says there are only 3 levels (bosses) to beat. That sounds like a $19 game to me.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Played a bit more DC universe today because WoW servers are down for maintenance *rage*. Switched to a PVE server because the PVP ones are just terrible. There's nothing to protect lower level characters from being killed by high level players. Seems like they added a few more options for customizing, nothing big though.

If you do get it, start in Gotham if you're a villain. If you don't have the Joker as your adviser you're just doing it wrong.

Super speed > flying and melee is better than ranged at least for lower levels. Smacking people around with a fiery staff of doom beats firing purple laser beams repeatedly.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I think I'll play some Kid Icarus this morning.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Procrastination has finally paid off! Rockstar games/add-ons are 50% off on XBL currently, so I was able to get RDR undead nightmare pack for only 400 pts. :D

I've been spending the last few days working my way through MTG: Duel of the Planeswalkers. Mostly that involves playing games over and over till you unlock all the cards in a deck. I just like free avatar awards and easy achievement points. :)

In other news, Blizzard would like me to try Cataclysm free for 10-days. No thanks.

I have that for Wii. I've found those old games are much harder now that I am an adult.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Ok, everytime I heard someone praising minecraft all I could think was, jeeze, these people are worse than Packer fans. So I finally downloaded a copy. I take back everything I said about it. I have no idea why, but this game is addicting.

It's free, you can do it, no one has to know, it's okay.

I Was attempting to do the Baradin Hold raid tonight and got ripped apart by the boss there. He has a 5 minute enrage timer and every second of that is spent in an intense damage race to beat out that timer. Only split up by him covering most of the floor in fire for about 10 seconds twice.

Yesterday I believe the final raid was cleared and they actually have to push back releasing content because so few groups have cleared this first level of Cataclysm raiding on the normal modes.

None of it is easy (mostly because people just don't know the mechanics) Even the trivial mobs that you have to go through just to get to the bosses have some kind of difficult mechanic to deal with. Saturday night I was trying to do Blackwing Descent and it took us forever just to get through 3 of them. 2 of them had to be fought together and if you didn't kill them at the same time the other would gain a huge damage buff and murder your entire group in a few seconds for killing his buddy. Oh and every so often the would find the person farthest from them, charge and do horrendous damage to anyone in the way.

Quote from a Hunter who was in the group. "Do they have how to videos for the trash?"

Of course it's a risk reward situation. Finishing this stuff makes you want to stand up, cheer, and jump around the room.

Nah, I know that I am done with MMO's. If KoToR is something special I might try it for a month. But otherwise I won't play another one. I tried WoW for 3 months and actually only played for 1 of those 3. I even tried going back to EQ for 1 month (where I had a guild, levels, gear, keys, etc.) and it didn't do anything for me either.

I prefer single-player RPG, quest based games now. Still a time sink, just no need to interact socially! ;)

Speaking of that, 2/15 is Dragon Quest VI! I easily had a 100+ hrs in DQIX.

Oh I also got around to beating Ordrak (Torchlight) last week finally. I had been on the final couple floors of the main dungeon forever and never bothered to finish it. He is annoying if you fight him fair, so I didn't. Now I can farm Shadow Vault to my hearts content. It would be amazing if character traits or items transferred into part 2.

Ice Climber for NES is a cool game.

Woohoo! I just got around to buying Red Dead Redemption - I'll have to download the undead nightmare pack soon!

Currently playing through Arkham Asylum. Good stuff!

I spent the better part of a year playing Aion. Definitely was more fun when I was still in law school or when I had a month off between jobs to play it often enough to at least sort of keep pace with the college kids who played non-stop. Trying to be a casual MMO player is just asking for frustration and trouble.

Raids that lasted longer than 2 hours also got annoying. I have a real life and a wife. I can't be devoting 3-4 hours in a row to a video game.

MMO's only work if you have no other life. I played WOW for about 14 months after it first came out. Most fun I've ever had gaming in my life, but I put everything else on hold and that wasn't healthy. I'll never do the MMO thing again.

Yeah, I've played MMO's off and on for years, though I've somehow always managed to avoid WoW (and UO/EQ were before my time). My MMO history goes back to Anarchy Online, Star Wars: Galaxies (before Sony f'ed it up), Tabula Rasa, Warhammer Online, Aion, probably one or two others I'm forgetting (not including the psuedo MMO's like Guild Wars, Diablo, Diablo 2).

Some of them I got bored with simply due to the nature of the game/bugs/etc., but others I just couldn't keep up with others who played 7 days a week for 4+ hours a day when I couldn't or wouldn't. Which was okay for awhile since there were certain plateaus that were constantly populated, but then I'd invariably hit the dead zone which all the power-levelers and long time players had gotten past but which the casual gamers rarely reached before quitting.

I may give the new Star Wars MMO a shot depending on my work situation at the time it's released, but I have a feeling MMO's may be behind me, too. Plus I'm gonna have to replay the Mass Effect games this summer before ME3 comes out around Christmas.
