Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I never trust those speed run videos. Didn't the SMB one get busted for being fake? or at least not being all a single run through the game.

Nice thing about DLC is, you aren't forced to buy it. So if you don't like it, you don't have to get it. :)

Is it March yet?

Yeah, except that when features and content that should have been released with the game are purposefully held out...

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Not long after I type this, I get Bronze at Monza. Took me a couple of hours of practice, an hour of watch YouTube videos and an hour to finally nail it down.

And Monza is the easy one.

How does one kill that which has no life? :p

Sorry, but when you throw one right down the middle like that, I just gotta take a swing...

I don't know who has the patience for some of that stuff either. Like, take a GTA game, in order to be "100% complete" you have to finish all the side quests, and there are a TON of them. Who has the time?

See above. :p

How to tell if a game is good, a major news organization quote mines and uses it for sensationalism.

Didn't Fox News also portray Mass Effect as the equivalent of the Playboy channel at one point? Simply because of the romance scene that can occur before the final battle?

Don't know why reporters always get lazy when it comes to video games, but I guess it's because the sensationalism sells.

Activision ends Guitar Hero series and lays off 500 employees.

Yeah, most of them (like the "fake" SMB3 one) use emulators, save states, etc. They're referred to as "tool-assisted" and it's a commonly accepted practice within the community. Kinda like watching pro wrestling even though you know it's staged, just for the entertainment value. There are a few genuine ones out there, though.

AND the credits to boot.

I'd love to see someone do this with the TMNT: The Arcade Game or The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants.

You beat TS: BVTSM like that and I'd be incredible impressed.

Your wish is their command. If it's not there, YouTube is your friend. Just search for "speed run" for whatever game.

Some of the good ones:

- any Metroid game (they take some pretty mind-bending shortcuts to skip entire chunks of the game and finish with ludicrously low completion %)
- Quake (arguably launched the whole craze)
- Sonic 1 and 2 (they've got most levels under 30 seconds by now)

Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY is only $7.50 today on Steam.

That was a pretty good game at full price.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Dragon Quest VI comes out today. Yay!

Sure they are going backwards in release numbers, as IX has already been out for a year+ here. But it's new to us! :D

Speaking of the thread title, someone on Twitter pointed out this is the 10 year anniversary of the meme.

(Definitely worth a watch for the sake of the anniversary.)

It must be baseball season again. I put money down on MLB 11: The Show (3/8 PS3).

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

The new PSP looks pretty sweet. They had a couple pages on it in Game Informer.

Dual sticks like a controller (instead of the current nub), larger screen, better hardware (better graphics, faster processor), and a touch pad on the back of the unit. It will be interesting to see how they use the touch pad with games. No official date yet, just "before the end of 2011".

Also be nice to see some gameplay footage for it, like Uncharted 3.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Besides the Civ IV and V deals running all weekend there are some other new deals that are pretty nice.

Supreme Commander 2 - $3.74
SC2: Infinite War Battle Pack - $2.49
All of the different Hitman games - $2.49/ea

I've had firmware updates on 360/PS3 that took 15 minutes to download and install. These are mandatory if you want to get online, and pop up automatically when you start up the system.

For comparison, here's Contra STARTED AND BEATEN in that time.

Speaking on this, having to read the new TOS agreement for PSN and the 1.06 update for GT5 has taken me 20 minutes. 20 minutes.

Good news for GT5, the lowered the bronze times for the X1 Challenge, considering I have completed Monza and Nuerburgring and was only 1.5 off on Suzuka, I'll be in my X2010 soon. :)

Ok, let's talk about some serious nerfing. The Bronze time for Suzuka went from 2:16.000 to 2:26.000, that's 10 freaking seconds! Monza went from 2:10 to 2:19! The Ring went from 2:15 to 2:23! The X1 challenge went from learning the car and then pushing it to the limit to just get Bronze to learning the car and then driving 2 lazy laps to earn an X1. That is a freaking nerf!

My times for the X1 Challenge:
Nuerburgring: 2:14.107
Monza: 2:09.946
Suzuka: 2.17.536 (I just got the bronze at 2:22.276 driving a very lazy lap)

The video for getting the X1 is cool, it's delivered off a C130.

JFC. My first "practice" run at Monza where I drove like a total wuss was a 2:26.xx. I might not have to level B-Spec up to 35 after all. And I'm merely an average driver.

Yeah with these new times it lowers the difficulty considerably. My fast times were set with me driving like a complete madman, the 2:22 at Suzuka I just drove pretty carefully.
