Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I just got RDR for the PS3. I may not come up for air for awhile. :p

Those screenshots make me hope that you may be able to start as a kid playing backyard hockey and progress up through the ranks until you reach the NHL. That would be very cool, even if the gameplay is lacking or it doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

I really HATE how the jersey looks on Gretzky... but at least the characters aren't all glossy like Starting Lineup figurines.
What's to hate? Come on, they even did the tuck!

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

So yeah, spent the $6 to get Half-life 2 on Steam. Then I remembered why I haven't played 1st person shooters in a really, really long time (and why I keep the Mass Effect games in 3rd person viewpoint).

Doom Syndrome strikes again. Literally caused me to sweat all over my body and massive butterflies in my stomach. I never really got that with games like Quake or Doom itself, but the newer 3d games make my body really, really mad without a point of reference that stays fairly constant.

You don't have to be like GLM or I who blazed through to the end in a week of play. :p

So far I'm very good at dying...and not just from being shot, or mauled by a wild animal. I have fallen off a cliff several times, and even managed to drown. I completed a mission where I was with the sheriff and we killed a bunch of guys, then he left. I whistled for my horse, but I guess I was standing too close to the canyon, because he came running up to me, then disappeared over the edge. :D I decided rather than walk all the way the hell back into town, I'd just follow my horse and respawn back at Bonnie's. :p

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I got smart this time. Up to level 3 sharpshooter, level 2 Hunter, and level 1 Survivalist and I haven't even left the Ranch yet on the Stagecoach with Bonnie.

Now I need to bank a couple of Grand and then I'll be set to go out. Meanwhile every night I can do a patrol around the Ranch.

:D

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Finally killed/skinned and got credit for (i.e., didn't die right after) 18 bears for the Bearly Legal achievement. Also completed the master hunter level where you have to kill 5 wolves with a knife. I think that's level 4.

I dread the levels where you have to kill cougars and bears with a knife.

If you wait a minute or two you can whistle for another horse. You have an unlimited supply of them, even if you kill them. But there is a short delay between times that the horse will come to you after it dies (not more than 2 minutes).

Couple grand? What do you think you are going to buy? The most expensive item in the game is like $800 and won't be available for a long time. :p

No kidding. Nice job guys but I can't do that anymore.

I didn't count on going through the game that fast. I figured I would get too distracted by side things and drag my arse playing the game (like I would with GTA or anything else I play). The story is that good on this game that I felt motivated to just keep playing.

I found that the game was like a bag of chips. I'd finish a mission and then say, "OK just one more and I'll stop/go to bed/whatever." One mission became, two, and so on. Either way, you end up out of shape and totally fulfilled.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Cougars are a piece of cake with a knife. Just let one start chasing you on horseback get well ahead of it, equip the knife while riding away and jump off the horse. You're going to get hit bad on the first charge by the thing. It should circle around you a few times. While it's doing that stab it. Get back on your horse because the thing is going to run away when you stab it. Catch up on the horse, jump off and stab it again. Too easy.

The bears are going to be a different story. Shoot it a few times with a gun that won't kill it and then stab it.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Even though I only sorta peruse this thread once in a while, since I'm a console generation behind (PS2), I read everyone's posts for a page or so, and long for the days of a one-button/one joystick video game.

Stuff like GTA/Red Dead Rock/whatever look fun and all.....until I play them. Video games are not supposed to require knowing how each of the 15 buttons and 2 joysticks work to play. It's just too much work to be fun. Even in the sports games.....

For example, I looked at the manual to figure out how to fight in NHL2K8 this past weekend, took note of all the other "moves" you can do in regular play.....JFC.

Gimme shoot, pass, check. Maybe drop pass. Definitely one-timer. That's about it. That's all I need. Auto line change? Fine. Some auto game strategies (adjust how aggressive you are: trap, all out willy nilly)? Fine.

I tell ya, you need a friggin' doctorate to play half the games now, without failing at them within 30 seconds or being bored within 2 minutes because you can't do anything.

Now you're talking.

Honestly, I'm kinda hooked on the strategery games nowadays, where in my younger years I wasn't. Shining Force II on the Genesis emulator (that game I was playing at your place a while back) and Romance Of The Three Kingdoms on PS2. Right amount of "action" with thinking involved.

But I can hardly ever ignore games like Pac Man, Galaga, etc. if I see them.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

That's a good job out of you judging without actually playing.

I've tried quite a few of these games, and let's be honest, this new Red Rock whatever is just GTA in a different setting. Think the whole line of Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter games, or Doom/first person shooter games. The details may change (and yes, could be key) but the basics are the same.

I like simplicity in my gaming. I don't want to read a book to play a game. I don't want to memorize 15 bajillion combos, or learn (to use the PS2 controls) what each of the 8 buttons, 2 joysticks, and a directional pad will do.

I want plug'n'play, with some challenge.

You're basically one step away from chasing kids off your lawn.

Another big thing for me is length. The opening cinema for Red Dead Redemption takes a good 10 minutes. What does a round of River Raid take, 5 minutes, 15 if you're uber-1337?

This is why I'm so into racing games - a race takes 5 minutes, and you can stop pretty much any time.
