I must say I was ignorant of the location of Vanderbilt. I've been to Nashville before but was visiting the Honky Tonk side of town. Interesting to note that Vanderbilt is situated very close to downtown Nashville and they don't carry a hockey program in what is proving to be a Hockey Crazy City...

Good Luck and say Hi to Jordin Tootoo for me if you see him! ;)

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get your good news then. I know they sure could use some more hockey fans...especially ones who frequent this board.

Re: Official Brookyone - 5 4 Fighting Nagging Thread

OK...give us the translation.

Ok had to do some research.......

Great Grand father Jan Aerstzoon "Jan, son of Aerts" was from the dutch town "De Bilt"
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Bilt

As is common in the olden days, name lines change every generation. Jan Aerstzoon's son was named "Jacob van de Bilt", named after the town, or an area of town. Father and Son head to the promised land in the west (America) in the 1600's. The last name gets basterdised by the English into one name "VanderBilt" and the rest is history.

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_Vanderbilt

While my name is Germanic, have both Dutch and German lineage. The Dutch side grandparents are named "van den Broek" meaning "from the Swamp" and "van de Wal" meaning "from the dike".

OnMaa you never fail to surprise us. Nice piece and you may have even educated (No Dumb Bunny) RStarr a little bit

Hey Brooky...maybe we can just settle on agreeing to call them the North Dakota Fighting Van De Wals and call her a day, eh. Whatdayasay? :)

Re: Official Brookyone - 5 4 Fighting Nagging Thread

If you were American...or if they had a hockey team...you would have heard of it. I guess RStarr will have to become a Predators fan for her hockey fix as it is in Nashville TN. The mean SAT is 1370 (Math & Reading) so in real life RStarr is no dumb bunny. BTW, congrats RStarr.

According to my college guidebook "Vanderbilt has top 20 academics according to USNews and a top 20 party scene according to Playboy. ....The Vanderbilt stereotype is what you might expect at a southern school: an all wealthy white school. Girls are blonde, preppy, fake and dependant. Guys are party animals and southern gentlemen. Everyone is from the south and everyone dresses to impress. ....If you come to Vanderbilt you better bring a sundress for football games".

Is that how y'all pictured her?

:D

No.

Some more American History. If you drive through the New York Adirondacks you will find towns like Schroon Lake, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Guilderland etc. Down Town New York is called Harlem, named after the famous dutch town Haarlem ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haarlem ). Back in the 1600's, the Dutch traded all over the world. New York City was at that time Dutch territory, and was sold in the 1600's to the English for 12 rifles and a piece of land in South America now called Suriname. Later in 1667, the English tried to trade it back to the Dutch, but they refused (See Refusal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Breda_(1667) ..... And the rest is history as they say.

P.S....It was during this same era the "Van der Bilt's" settled in America in the mid 1600's. They made their money in trading and shipping up and down the Hudson River.

Yeah, that is why it was originally called New Amsterdam. During late colonial times, and for most of the 19th century, the area in New York state east of the Hudson was called the English side, while the west was referred to as the Dutch side.

All this talk reminds me of the great John Clee's line in A Fish Called Wanda, I believe. Something like..."If there's two things I can't stand..It's people that are intolerant of others...and the Dutch!" :)

Seems to me over the years there has been a long line of Hockey Players in the NHL with Dutch names..thinkin Ed Van Impe and John Vanbiesbrouck (?).
Do you have a list, with there translations? :p

Isn't Stevie Yzerman of Dutch heritage?

Dude, sooooooooooooooo off base there. The line was uttered by Michael Caine as Austin Power's dad in Goldmember. ;)

Re: Official Brookyone - 5 4 Fighting Nagging Thread

Confirmed: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295178/quotes

Nigel Powers: All right Goldmember. Don't play the laughing boy. There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Goldmember: What? Take the fahza away! Dutch hater! And now, it is time to say goodbye. Dr. Evil's orders. Which, for you, is bad news bears,

[talks in a deep vioce]
Goldmember: Walter Matthau.

Plenty of NHL'rs with Dutch Genes and Names...

The Staal Brothers (Brothers of Steel), Stevie Ijzerman (Man of Iron), Joe Nieuwendijk (New Dike), Van Riemsdijk (Ring Dike), Van BiesBroek (Swamp Grass), Beukeboom (Beuken Tree) and the list goes on.....BTW Ed van Impe is more likely of Belgian background...another famous van Impe, Lucien, won the Tour de France a few times.

There is a huge connection between the Dutch and Canucks, stemming from WW2. Both countries are very appreciative of each other as a result.

Ya..That's what I meant.:) Knew I heard it somewhere. Funny line in which you can change from the Dutch to any nationality that may be bothering you at the time. A real keeper.

On a brighter note...I now know the proper spelling of John Cleese.

Sorry, Dude. I would have thought he made the quote, too!

Re: Official Brookyone - 5 4 Fighting Nagging Thread

Just thought I would bring this up to the top so that Brooky and Fighting could get their brawl on in their special thread
