Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Miami @ Alaska - Period 1 Observations:

1. Austin the Tsar scored on a silky-smooth move. made that guy look like he was standing still.
2. I have to admit that I LOVE when our guys go to Alaska, because I love listening these Alaska commentators. They are a true joy to listen to.

(Barber just scored from Czarnick)

3. Is it just me or does Williams over-skate his posts on a relatively regular basis? Keep in mind that this comes from a fan that never played competitive hockey. It just seems that he skates himself out of position and is late recovering. Is this a common issue with young goalies?

No Paulazzo, no Spinell last night is interesting. And, to steal from Cris Carter...Blake Coleman and Jimmy Mullin...where you at, man?

I haven't noticed this. I'll keep an eye out for it. Proper angle coverage is critical, particularly when we start playing better competition.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Mullin is the biggest disappointment for me so far, talk about sophomore slump / not earning a spot on a better line

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Early contenders for the 1st Annual Tyler Biggs Memorial We-Expected-More Award :p

I approve. I still expect Coleman to have a big year but Mullin is in a funk.

Or What about the 1st Annual Curtis Mckenzie Deceptively Good First Year To Make Everyone Think You Have First Line Scoring Potential But In Reality You're More of a Grinder Award?

Ironically, I typed here about six hours ago that mullins situation was probably more a depth issue and us trying to roll four lines. Then my phone died. Nice sweep, mckay with the clean sheet, hagel gets his first goal in a miami sweater, little wide is still on fire.

Still up at 5am doing architecture crap, gotta love finals week. Wish I could have streamed the late night game on my laptop, that would have been nice. Regardless, nice win, keeping up with what looks to be a competitive top 3 or 4 teams in the CCHA down the stretch. Wideman continuing to reinforce himself as my favorite player this year.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Seeing Coleman be active and involved even though he didn't put the puck in the net was promising. Was good for Mullin to get one, too. We get scoring from those two plus Murphy and Wideman will make us very dangerous and force teams to focus on more than just the big line.

Weekly Alumni Update after a great weekend performance by the current team up in Alaska.

Alumni that stood out to me this week were Reilly Smith, Alden Hirschfeld, and Jeff Zatkoff. Smith finally broke through with his first pro goal then proceeded to pot two more throughout the week also adding an assist for a 4 point week. Hirschfeld contributed a goal and 2 assists for the Providence Bruins and was +4 on the week. Hirschfeld also tangled in his first pro fight. I will have to look to see if I can find any video. Zatkoff has been lights out the last three weeks posting a combined 6-0-0 record.

Little late to the party here, but this is awesome.

Nice to see McKay setting sustainable expectations for his rookie season. :D

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Just closed my MHT account. Got called out by the apostle DevilGrad for taking the moron DICK to task. So, I edited my post and told him to close my account. Done with that site. Bunch of idiots. I know I'm not in the minority when I share that opinion. Issue was over accepting mediocrity in Miami's overall athletic program which DICK is so quick to say is ok. If friggin Northern Illinois can go to a BCS game, I don't understand why we aren't trying to do likewise.

Rant over.

Go hockey.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Agree. The name of the award is perfect!

Dare I say signature worthy?

Sort of spitballing here, but the NHL CSS released their prelimiary 2013 draft rankings, and for the first time in a few years Miami is without a skater on the board. I've read a few blurbs indicating that Hamilton may still be a late round pick, but I haven't read much about the prospects for Wingels, Joyaux The Younger or Louis. Point being, next year's team will cap out at 5 or 6 draftees. I like this.

I'm not in the camp that says adondon pursuing the blue chip, 1-2 year rental players. However, after going all in on the big recruits, and getting burned, I like that we seem to be leveling out. Maybe we lose Barber after his junior year, perhaps McKay going undrafted is as much of a travesty as some scouts have espoused and he leaves after two years. Either way, this should be a fun group for awhile to come.

Me too. Honestly, my first reaction to seeing a bunch of draft picks on a recruiting class isn't "Oh sweet, these guys will be awesome!", but rather, "Most of these guys will be gone in 1-2 years".

Agreed. I think there is definitely a balance to be struck, but I would much rather be putting the majority of our efforts into a solid 4 year player.

Please no....

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Congrats to Barber and Kuraly. Miami could have had 6 players on the world junior preliminary roster
