Bingo. The NHL may want this but NBC doesn't. And NBC runs the WC.

...IF NBC has their way, it'll be BOS @ DET.

There's no point to putting it in Ann Arbor then, because you won't be able to give away enough tickets to sellout. Toronto fans will cross the border for an outdoor game.

If college hockey can sell out Michigan Stadium, I'm pretty sure that the Red Wings can sell out the stadium for a WC- even if it's a B-level opponent from the perspective of locals. The only obstacle would be overpricing the seats.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

FYI, I believe Detroit already charges a minimum of $119 to sit in the lower bowl at JLA.

A reasonable pricing structure would have to be set at the Big House to account for the distant sightlines and the overall supply of seats. Priority would obviously go to season ticket/suite holders.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

I have no doubt if it was Boston @ Detroit in Ann Arbor they would sell out.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

About 22,000-26,000 of the people at the Big Chill were students who paid $5 (w/season tickets to hockey or football) or $10 (bought by itself).

Unless you want to actually sell tickets for $5, you invite Toronto. Toronto fans are the dumb ones in Western Ontario who follow the Leafs and will drive 2-4 hours and pay $20 or $30 for ****ty seats especially given their pricing in the ACC. Boston fans will sit at home and watch on TV, especially since they have outdoor hockey of some variety almost yearly at Fenway.

Hell, at $20-30 I am a possible candidate for the WC in Ann Arbor... I had a chance to go to the game in Chicago, but didn't want to drop $190 on a ticket... Kinda regret it, kinda don't... Would like to go eventually just to say I went to one of these outdoor Hockey Festivals... I already know I won't be able to see anything... Just looking for something to put on the bucket list basically...

It's always tough to gauge demand. Wisconsin over-charged for their outdoor game at Camp Randall the year prior and ended up embarrassing themselves. I think that caused Michigan to go pretty conservative in their ticket pricing and demand ended up being way higher than expected. There were a lot of cheap tickets, but they went very quickly, and they probably could have charged a lot more if they had wanted to.

But generally, I would agree that it has to be Toronto. Conventional thinking is that NBC wants two east coast teams, but after this year's WC saw a ratings drop, I think the idea is to sell the spectacle of the event more than a match-up between Detroit and Toronto, and Toronto guarantees a much bigger spectacle.

Also, I had pretty good seats for the Big Chill, but the view of the ice is surprisingly good for how big the stadium. I'd imagine it would be a million times better than a baseball field where you end up with some pretty awkward angles.

I already call naming rights to the Hemskey/Hall/Horcroff line being called the Triple H line.

Watch what you say. Next thing we all know Hemsky will marry Daryl Katz's daughter and become next in line for ownership, give himself 40 minutes of ice time a game, and cut Ryan Nugent-Hopkins so he can sign his best friend Eric Lindros to a tryout deal.

2 goals in 0:13 finishes off Ryan Miller at the Joe. 9 saves on 14 shots. Not a good night for him at all.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

Wings beat Buffalo 5-0 to go to 15 straight home wins. They really need to secure home ice for the playoffs, such a bipolar team when home and away from the Joe.

Pegula's a moron for continually saying that he wasn't going to fire Regeir or Ruff. Both of those guys have worked for over a decade on a Sabres team that didn't spend money. They might not be what they need for a team willing to spend to the cap.

If they put an outdoor game in DC they'll be playing water polo.
They'll balance the budget beforehand so it freezes over.

Just saw a source say that next years winter classic is all but finalized. Wings vs Leafs at the Big House. Hopefully I'm not working.

Yesterday on Felger & Mazz, Bruins President Cam Neeley said the league has not told them they're out of the running for the WC, but he did seem resigned to the fact the B's weren't going to be involved. The speculation is that if Toronto is involved, NBC is getting something in return.
