Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

The more I think about it, the more I believe that an outdoor GLI would be a farce. The late semifinal with MI vs. SCSU might draw 30% attendance on the strength of MI fans, but the only way attendance would be better than that is if the title game is MI/MSU. Just like at the Joe, you're even more unlikely to see people staying for both games due to the outdoor nature of the event, and a general lack of interest in watching games involving Tech and St. Cloud.

Three reasons why the Winter Classic will never involve a Canadian team:
N
B
C

They get 0 ratings for huge viewers in Toronto or Montreal or Ottawa. NBC wants numbers and the cities in the Northeast can deliver those. Denver and Minneapolis may have a chance, but the only way a Canadian team gets in the Winter Classic is for them to hold their own. NBCSN or NHLN might broadcast that here in the States, but NBC doesn't want any Canadian teams - or any teams from the non-traditional hockey markets. Phoenix, Dallas and the Florida teams need not apply. They might consider Anaheim or the Kings as the road team for the LA market, but that would be a stretch.

I really think that NHL should be going to having the Winter Classic in the US every year and the Heritage Classic every 2 or 3 years in Canada.

A lot of Leafs fans live in Florida during the winter to get away from the cold. Toronto is one of the best know brands in hockey period. They and the Canadiens are the caveat in the big U.S. market rule.

I hear that's where they're moving the Chiefs after the mill closes :p

I just don't see NBC allowing a Canadian team into the Classic. Have they ever (by choice) carried a game with a Canadian team?

<strike>Versus</strike> NBC Sports Network has started carrying more Canadian teams... One can only assume that's a prelude to carrying one on the mother network as a trial run (some random Saturday day game?).

How does the GLI work? MI played BC in the first round this year...why then would they play the outsider again next year?

How can you say it will never involve a Canadian team when there's already talk about Toronto being in it next year?

Well, right now either you or Bob McKenzie is going to be wrong.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

The NHL may want Toronto-Detroit in the WC, and they may have even leaked it to trustworthy sources - like McKenzie - to make it seem like a fait accompli. However, as I recall the Winter Classic matchups are picked by NBC and there is no way the network wants to lose a good chunk of its audience to a Canadian team. I don't happen to think having a TOR-DET (or MTL-BOS) game will lose that much in the ratings game, but NBC isn't going to want to take that risk. Has anybody heard anything from NBC about this, or are the sources for this story at the league?

I'll happily be wrong because TOR-DET at the Big House would be quite the spectacle.

The GLI is always Michigan, Michigan State, and Michigan Tech & then there's a different fourth team every year.

Right, I understand that part...I was talking about determining what the matchups will be.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

Yeah, sorry I goofed that up. Next year it'll be Michigan vs. Tech in the night semifinal, but I still doubt that makes attendance in a hypothetical Comerica Park outdoor game any better than 30-35%. Most of the casual blue fans will hold off for the championship game. State will play SCSU in the afternoon, and that game traditionally starts at 4. Since many people have to work during the week after Christmas and the people who do take time off are usually going out of town, there will be maybe 4,000-5,000 people there until the 3rd period.

The GLI really is just about the championship game for a lot of people, both casual UM/MSU types, and older Techies who swore off the Huskies years ago.

Re: Official 2011-2012 NHL Season Thread: 2 Sedins, No Cup!

Based on the amount of cheering for that goal, Detroit fans are getting a bit of payback for the United Center being "Joe Louis West" in the mid 2000's.

Bingo. The NHL may want this but NBC doesn't. And NBC runs the WC.

...IF NBC has their way, it'll be BOS @ DET.
