Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

I guess they just don't get it man. They've been very intense games for years now, since both programs started to rise, but I guess seeing as though the rivalry is extremely lopsided, they think our ownage of them is due to us playing physical puck.

Oh no! If the parents are upset at their boys getting hit, we might as well hang up the skates. Good season boys, but we've hurt too many overly sensitive parents feelings.

They better close their eyes when Biggs gets on campus.

Apparently the parents of some ND players' parents were very displeased with the calls on the ice. I guess we must be a dirty team. "Barn Door Open. Horse Out." :D

I dont want to keep ranting and beating a dead horse, but it just bothers me lol. We are a big, fast, physical, talented team. If they can't handle it don't try and play with the big boys. If they thought we were bad I wish I saw what they thought of north dakota. That is their style to a T and it works for them, honestly its a good program to foil yourself after but holy crap this whinning and crying about a team being too physical is a joke. They were penalties, yes, get over it nothing malicious.

AHHHHH I so wish I could lace 'em up again with jackals like this when I read this garbage.

Alright, my last rant ill move on.

23 days till Maine and sunny florida, has to be warmer than it is here....

I had mentioned in our thread that if what I saw of Miami this weekend was indicative of what they were getting to be like against everyone my respect for the program was cratering. My respect for you guys as posters has taken a huge hit as well, and that bugs me because I had always considered our rivalry on the ice or on the internet to be a good one. Good games, good back and forth on the internet, but nothing out of bounds. It was just 4 short years ago I remember going onto a couple of threads and sticking up for Miami when people thought you guys were celebrating your first outright CCHA regular season championship a little too much. At least as far as the last few days, that is changing. I saw all four of these games (Miami and the North Dakato series), and there wasn't one thing in the North Dakota series that even remotely made me stand up and think "dirty hit" or "cheap shot" at all. Not one. That was far from the case this weekend. Instead of taking shots at Notre Dame fans who thought the hits were out of line (and we -- of course -- may have a biased view), talk to a few people who haven't got a dog in the fight and ask then what THEY think about the Miami program over the last 2 or three years. You may be surprised.

I know some of you guys have been around the game for a long time. Maybe as long as me, which is the early 1970s. And I figure some of your posters are fairly new fans, just like some of the ND posters. But I find the repeated references to "big boy hockey" to be beneath you. Notre Dame can and does play "big boy hockey." We just got done beating you guys in your own barn one night doing it. We also have plenty of "big boy" fans who know the game as well as anyone around, and who also appreciate a good physical game.

What I find most amusing, sadly enough, is that as a program you guys really haven't done anything more than us, so I wouldn't crow too loudly about owning us. Yes I know there are more NCAAs, but we have the titles in Detroit, so it's a wash more or less. Unless of course you count finding an even more excruciating way to lose a national championship game as some sort of an accomplishment. So why treat us or our posters as a bunch of newbies who don't know or understand the game? I've got nearly 40 years in this game and a personal relationship with plenty of people in it, past and present. You may not like my opinion, but I don't care, because I know that beyond the potential bias, it is completely valid.

Believe it or not, good luck the rest of the way (save for 2 games in January). And yes I really mean that. Depsite the bad blood on the weekend, I still see Miami as a partner with Notre Dame in the continuing re-shaping of the CCHA into something more than UM, MSU, and 9 supporting actors.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

IHF - despite the arguments over this most recent series, I respect Notre Dame and the ND posters/fans immensely, and that won't change with comments arising out of one weekend. I hope you won't let a few posts (by posters feeling defensive about their team, no less) ruin your respect for those posters in the long run. This Miami-ND series was definitely the most scrappy I've seen between these two teams. It seemed like there was about to be an all-out fight at every whistle from the drop of the puck on Friday until the clock ran out on Saturday. For better or worse, it looks like these games are going to be aggressive and physical by default now. Hopefully, for all concerned, they don't get out of hand in the future.

Now it would be nice if we could move on...

As Vaiver22 said: "24 days without a game makes me wonder if the season is ever going to start back up again." I wish I could take a trip down to Florida, but since that won't be happening any time soon, I wish there was some TV coverage (or at least an internet stream) for the Florida College Classic.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

All good points IHF. And, in my opinion, Miami has done less than ND over the recent past. I would like a CCHA playoff championship (or two) and Miami does not have one. Also I do think some of the attitudes on here are condescending (there are here, as everywhere on this board, varying degress of exposure to the game and varying levels of objectivity and maturity). I hope the rivalry continues strong in the future. I think that is good for both programs. But I do think there is a reason that some of the seminal perceptual distortion studies are done using sporting events. :) Fans have a tough time being objective. Some of the Miami parents were around me and they were upset by what they considered cheap stuff by ND. I did not completely agree, but that was their perception of things.

I believe the thing that started everything was Reichard getting run on Friday in the second period. That was not something Miami did. Miami went nuts at that run and it was chippy thereafter. There was a head shot there and, I am not saying this is objective, but some attributed Reichard's play (not very good) the rest of the game to that shot. The guy who sits next to me used to evaluate refs for the CCHA and he could not believe the new contact to the head rule was not invoked there (I really have no idea if it should have been). Coach Jackson reportedly apologized to Coach Blasi last year for Palmeiri's runs at Reichard (I believe Palmeiri sat on Saturday), so there is also a history here. Again IHF, that is not to justify stuff Miami did, but to say this is one-sided, especially when last year is thrown in, is not objective either.

I do believe Miami is a more physical team than ND and generally more aggressive, at least from what I have seen of ND. Miami is not Notre Dame, so MU does play with a little chip on their shoulder, which I like as long as it does not go over the line. That is the style they believe gives them the best chance to win but I, for one, do not want to see them ever go to far.

IHF, we have stood up for one another (remember that dope that went after ND right after Jackson was hired? I really enjoyed watcing ND do well just because of him). I'd like to think of this as a stage that rivalries go through. We have two good coaches for our programs who, in my opnion, play the game the right way. I think in the long run that will prevail so I hope last weekend does not linger on either side too long.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Well put, Redeagle, as always. Very objective review of the situation.

Put me in the minority. Place me in the "thug" category, but I really don't care what other fans think of our program. I don't care that folks think we're too physical or play on the edge. Do what it takes to win the game. Notre Dame finally beat us on Friday. Congrats. We'll be back to see if we can take two in January and move on. I have no feelings of emotional connection to that school or fan base and that goes for the rest of the teams in the conference.

I have not heard as much griping about Miami's style of play from other programs coaching staff and fans as I have from Notre Dame. That seems strange to me.

All I know is watching the WCHA on a very close and regular basis (out here in Colorado) leads me to believe that Notre Dame would not survive in that conference if they feel Miami is a dirty team. I don't see us doing things that are so far out of line from anyone else around the country.

That said, Redeagle is correct. I nearly jumped through the computer screen Friday night when I saw Reichard get run...again...by Notre Dame. Might be time to look in the mirror before casting stones.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

What happened to St Cloud this year? That road win isn't doing anything for us. Does anyone think they will pick up so momentum after the new year?

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

I see that Mason got suspended for the first game in the Florida Classic. This confuses me a little bit. Why does this checking from behind call warrant a suspension while Weber's doesn't, and to add more what about Tomassoni's multiple major penalties, and Kennedy's earlier in the season? When I saw the hit live I didn't even think it deserved a major penalty. There was a hit earlier in the game by one of our guys that I though was a lot worse that only garnered a 2 minute minor for boarding if I remember correctly. I just don't know why this hit in particular led to a suspension while there are so many others that I thought were worse. Maybe the CCHA is just trying to make a statement. If anyone could shed some light on the issue I would be willing to listen.

Also, I wish someone had video of the hit. I would like to see it again.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Maybe they'll start handing out suspensions for running goalies?

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Haha maybe...this whole situation just baffles me. Was Mason's hit really that bad? Like I said, I didn't think it was any worse than Weber's or the one earlier in the game that didn't even get a major.

People on ND's thread talking about vindication lol. Mason is such a thug he deserves this...

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

I haven't heard anything. As far as I know, they haven't really started putting together other options. I'm sure there will plenty of cliché options like "Bad Boys" but hopefully they'll come up with something original, too. I'd love to have the current director or someone else who knows what they are doing actually write an original "Miami Penalty Song" of some sort. In the meantime, the student section should do what we do at away games.... wave and start at "SLAM" when the penalty box door closes.

I vote for "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen. There's the obvious connection with Redhawks and Swoop, and I can just imagine how the students will reinterpret "Don't you know about the bird...."

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

http://www.miamistudent.net/news/mu-plans-to-phase-out-redskin-logo-1.1828253

In terms of the "Scalp Song," Tron said the Miami Tribe was not the original source of contention.
"The tribe didn't complain," Tron said. "I think it started as we began looking to see how we could really build traditions for the RedHawks name and gain a lot of student support for our athletic events."

Student support for hockey is just fine, thanks for the concern though. I'm sure snazzy new "RedHawk" based cheers will really get the students riled up to go sit in Millet to watch Miami play a 45-42 game against Western...right.

"Let's Go RedHawks Let's Go KAW! KAW! Let's Go RedHawks Let's Go KAW! KAW!"

"Of course, you know, whenever you make a change like this there will be a period of time where people are going to show their opposition to it," Hodge said. "That's fine. It happens. It seems kind of silly to me, but it will pass."

Glad our attachment to a Miami hockey tradition seems silly to you David. I think your management of this university is pretty laughable as well, we can find a common ground after all!

I had a pretty good look at the hit and I thought it deserved a major, just my vantage though. Love the vindication talk, this whole thing has just been so cute.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

All I know is Reilly better make the WJC team. Between Notre Dame's coach crying and some PC nut at Miami going overboard with the Scalp Song with absolutely nothing from the actual Tribe about being upset, this may be a long 3 weeks with only those things to talk about ha.

Very well said. You said it better than me lol. That was my whole point, I am in no way defending either hit on the weekend. I think they deserved major penalties, my issue is all of the complaining going on. Just like you said it, not one thing was mentioned on here after friday when Reichard got ran into the goal post. No one went screaming that ND is a dirty team, although they did the same thing last year so their is a pattern, but chalked it up to two rival teams playing hard fought games.

I do not apologize for the "big boy hockey" comments because it is true. Miami has played a lot of pyhsical games over the last 5 years when the competition level went up. I am just embarrassed for the ND hockey community over this plain and simple. I too heard from multiple people that Coach Jackson personally apologized to Coach Blasi over the actions that took place last year. Whats worse is if/when something happens to a Miami player in South Bend your program will look 10 times worse for it because of the comments coming from their posters about wanting to hurt one of Miami's players, that is an embarrasement and too keep going at this is frankly pathetic.

I see that Mason got suspended for the first game in the Florida Classic. This confuses me a little bit. I wasn't at the game, but from what I heard from more than 1 person it was a nasty hit and warranted a major penalty. I would urge you to read the definition in the NCAA rule book on the distinction between a game misconduct and a game disqualification. Anything head first into the boards or a goal post is automatic. It also depends on distance traveled and how long a player has to pull up as well as the angel the hit is made. All things taught during camps and takes a while to understand, but the book clearly outlines it as best it can.

His team won yesterday...I think.

Yeah, we really do have nothing to talk about. Guess I'll actually have to do some studying this week instead of sitting on USCHO all day.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Yeah Reilly is on the red team along with Shehan (ND), Olsen (UMD), and Schwartz (CC), as the only collegians in camp.

Re: Official 2010-2011 Miami season Thread: 3rd times a charm???

Reilly with a goal in yesterday's game, first cuts to be announced this morning. Best of luck!

Edit: Nevermind http://www.tsn.ca/world_jrs/story/?id=345454

Back to having nothing to talk about.

Eh, well once Hodge makes us become Oxford University, we can naturally take the Redskin moniker back right? How about this as a replacement scalp song? I hear Chief Illiniwek is available right now, he can do the dance.

Hey I was at circle tonight and Daryl said he couldn't understand what all the administration's fus was about, all the proof I need that the PC police are wrong.

As any circle bar regulars know - Daryl's word is basically law :p
