Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

It's still a long season. We've had our share of injuries as well as freshmen in very key roles. The injuries hurt the worst of course. If two other teams in HE lose a first liner like Quailer over the next month, that alone could shake up the expected standings. I.e. Umass loses Marcou, where do you think their season would be headed? Same with UNH losing Butler or Maine losing Nyquist. Anything similar would cost each of those teams a game or two the rest of the way. Not a lot but the difference beween third and seventh this season. Would probably cost UMass five-six games though.....

If the goaltending and defense hold up they should make the playoffs. For home ice we would have to see some serious improvements in the O. Regardless of how it turns out, I think we'd be a top five HE team next year with Quailer back.

I'm not sure if you were implying something to the effect of "it's only Merrimack" with the bolded text above (my bad if not), but to put things into perspective (and I can't believe I'm saying this...), Merrimack has been one of the most offensively productive teams in the country thus far. Regarding in-conference games only, they're scoring 3.78 goals per game, second only to UNH's 3.81. Overall they're at 3.64/game (see below).

G/GM
4.33 Yale
4.13 Wisconsin
4.07 Quinnipiac
4.00 Bemidji State
3.76 Boston College
3.64 Merrimack
3.64 Umass
3.64 Cornell

If anything, I'd say getting a close, low-scoring victory over a much-improved Merrimack team was a great team victory AND a great accomplishment for Mountain. (cue the "you should never consider Merrimack a legitimate team" comments to follow...)

Like you, I'm also not jumping on the Mountain bandwagon just yet, but he honestly didn't give me a reason to believe he shouldn't at least be making a start here and there (how about the tournament coming up?). Rotating goalies seem to be the trend in HEA. If anything, won't the competition for the starting spot keep them both on top of their game?

I've been waiting all season to see him in net, not because I didn't think Rawlings could handle the full-time position, but because I just couldn't understand why Cronin didn't even let Mountain see time during the exhibition game. It's not like Rawlings was dominant that game. If anything, it's slightly more comforting to know now that there's a reliable guy as a backup if necessary. I actually thought Mountain handled a few rebounds better than I've seen out of Rawlings this year. Seeing him immediately poke his stick out to cover the puck off a bad rebound is something I've been hoping to see more of from Rawlings all season, as opposed to the rebound and blank stare approach...

I will say though... best moment of the weekend: Rawlings congratulating Mountain off the ice after the game. This offense really needs to start clicking during the second half. It's still crazy to know that almost halfway through the season they still have a fairly legitimate chance at home ice, even while having the worst offense in the conference by a longshot.
Agreed on all points. My mentioning Merrimack wasn't meant to disparage them at all. There offense (especially the PP) was impressive, and obviously has the the numbers to impress.

3 days before our Maine gm.. not sure what to expect (still tough to figure..the consistency part). The team has shown it can beat ME.. also get beat badly by them. I dont know Maine's schedule but this will be our last gm before the team gets 20 odd days off (from hockey gms at least).. for the Christmas break.

I'd like to see if we can steal one even though our away record (aargh..) is 1-5-1. If you can't compete on the road, you cannot think NCAA or even HE tourney here in Boston. Its time for the team to get a big one before the break. Heck tie Maine.. they're like 4-1-1 their last 6 gms so i'll take a tie but i'd like for the kids not to get blown out & then have to sit on that for 3 weeks before their nxt outing. Let's skate hard, fight for the puck & win the small battles. Just give yourselves (and fans) a Christmas present :)

Let's go get 'em Huskies! Happy holidays & g'luck team :)

From the Maine thread.. they're unveiling new Black jerseys for the Blackbears tomorrow & asking fans to wear black. The first 1000 odd fans will get free ts as well. Should be like an NU home gm then.. :)

I know the odds are against us.. but sometime or the other we got to start winning on the road.. why wait until next year :)

Go Huskies

Does anyone know whether Rawlings is expected to be back for this series? If so, I think this might be a good weekend to start both goaltenders and see how they do.

There's only one game this weekend. We only play each Hockey East team three times in a season, and we've played Maine twice already. From what I've heard, Rawlings is still uncertain.

I got a picture from a friend at Maine of what he thinks the new uniforms are but I don't think they've been officially unveiled so it might not be what they look like at all. We'll see tomorrow I guess!

Yeah, I know HE teams play each other three times. I forgot the Huskies were only playing one this weekend...

..you know, we could still have 2 goaltenders play in the gm tomorrow..

.. hope it does not come to that :)

Yeah, I can only think of BAD reasons why that would happen, so lets hope not!:o

I still have a tough time getting used to these single game weekends.

Guh, I can take losing to a better team while being outplayed, but we are shooting ourselves in the foot. I hope Cro sits Wade

Son of a *****!

My bad.:o You guys can pin this loss on me.

I'll choose to pin it on Wade's boneheaded penalty. And all the other UPPERCLASSMEN that committed boneheaded penalties.

IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!! IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!

I didn't even get to listen to the game (gotta love Saturday night schoolwork), but from what I hear it wasn't pretty. NU really needs to stop taking stupid penalties...it's lost us plenty of games both this year and last. Especially when the other team is lighting it up on the power play. The PK unit shouldn't be giving up 4 goals in a game either, no matter how many times they're out there. And 6 isn't all that much.

If there are any positives from tonight, we finally scored on the power play again. And Maine has some pretty nice new jerseys (friend sent a pic).

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Looks like HE is starting to get some separation with UNH, BC and Maine up top and PC and BU at the bottom. Us and The Mack not too much farther ahead. I'd like to think we'll make the playoffs at least. If BU doesn't, it will make the season for me regardless of where we end up.

I'm going to try and make the tournament up in Hanover to start the year out. Nice town to hang out in for a day assuming it isn't -10 degrees outside.

At the end of the game the boys at wrbb brought up an interesting question: was last year the fluke or is it going to be this year?

Last night was preffy terrible. Don't know what else to take away from it.

Eh, I don't think it's that simple. Last year everything came together perfectly and we had the best goalie in the country, but I hesitate to call it 'flukey' just as this year isn't 'flukey'. We're a young team with a lot of talent and a promising recruiting class coming in next year. We're rebuilding after losing a lot last year. I'm optimistic for the next few years, but this year is going to be inconsistent, it's the nature of a young team with two rookie goalies.

It is what it is.
