Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Sigh....this goes without saying, but last night's finish was brutal. We had all the momentum in the world going into OT, and yet you could smell that UML goal coming about 30 seconds before it happened the way they were attacking our zone.

For the record, it smelled awful.

In the "Positives" column: they never quit, they played relatively disciplined, capitalized on a gift-wrapped third period by Lowell, and the offense stuck around for another weekend.

In the "Negatives": horrible defensive breakdown to lose the game, Rawlings had a few softies get by him, and we wasted a chance to grab some momentum going into the stretch run.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

I agree with your points kcnuloyal.. that is a tough way to lose the gm, but we now have offense 2 out of 3 gms & that's a great thing to have 2nd half of season. Lowell is a very good team & they showed how well they skated the first 2 periods..

Even with that heartbreaking loss, i thought the team really skated well in the 3rd & OT.. Being down 5-2 with 7 odd minutes.. i thought the better team would win. I still think the better team won last night, but we weren't that far off.

Rawlings would surely like to get 2 of those back, i thought the clear breakaway we had should have been buried. So goes the tape.. someone had to lose.

I loved Cronin's aggresiveness in the last 2 mins of regulation.. he was trying having the team go for the W in regulation itself. Even in OT, with 30 odd ticks left, he sent 3 or 4 to the net for the W instead of having them skate around in circles for the tie. Like you said kcnu.. the downside of that approach is, if puck squirts out the other way.. its bye bye.. which s what happened. I still liked that mindset. You don't skate to tie..

Lots of positive from this one (least for this fan). They looked awful first 2 periods.. they looked spectacular last 2 (inc OT)...

Go Huskies.. earn your 2 pts tonight & don't look back! :)

Agreed...I love Cronin's aggressive approach too. One bounce in our favor and we're talking about this game being a season-changer. Instead, they just have to dig a little deeper and salvage the two points this weekend on a big stage.

By the way, the evolution of Jake Newton is really fun to watch this year.

QFT. He sure as heck doesn't play like a freshman d-man! I actually started saying that a few weeks before the break.

Looking forward to the game tonight. I know they lost, but let's hope they can take some good vibes from that comeback into tonight.

For the most part, I liked the changes at Matthews.

My one complaint is I had the most expensive ticket you could buy and the new press box blocked the view of a quarter of the ice, including the goal UMass shot at twice. They really should tell you about that before they sell you a ticket.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Went to the UML game. I thought it was pretty ugly. Multiple soft goals, particularly the first one and UML often skated circles around the guys in the first two periods. Not all the time but too much. Nice comeback but I agree with northeastern, you could smell the OT goal coming.

I've enjoyed watching Newton as well. His D was solid most of the game and the short-handed pinch was a great play. Only negative was I noticed about five passes roll off or over his stick in the offensive zone. The great thing is he'll get even better next year.

Thought Tuckerman, McNeely and Driscoll were great against UML.

Bummer about the UMass game tonight. Glad I had my own league game to go to instead. I would have, as my GF said regarding the UML game, "gotten very flustered".

Keeping my hopes up for some good showings the rest of the year.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

I am sick. I am literally f-in sick of this team and its lack of desire. I would bench half the team if I could.

Injuries are piling up (three ACL injuries!) and players look like they have no heart.

My number one craptastic list (not picking on froshies here)

Tyler McNeely- I wasn't sure it was possible but you seem to be a worse captain than Joe Vitale (who I liked as a player, not a leader). Tyler, you are killing me right now, where is the leadership? Light a fire under the guys! COME ON!

Mike Hewkin- How are you even playing? Unlike Chris Student (a freshman) you have no fricken excuse, get it together.

Steve Silva- Where to even start? I hope Cro benches you. What an absolute bone-head play and you were going after him all night...why? It was a two goal game that quickly became a four goal game. Good riddance.

Drew Meunch- Cronin once called you the best player on the team! Let's see it!

The lack of desire on this team is absolutely murder, I never thought we'd miss a guy like Ryan Ginand as much as we do. I knew we'd miss Brad and Joe etc...but Ginand and McCauley had that fire that no one else seems to.

There is talent on this team but the mental make-up is just total crap. Absolute 100% crap.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

3 out of 4 goals last night were when we were a man down.

I don't know if its conditioning, discipline or both...

but the simple answer is.. if we skate 5x5, we can get stingy giving up goals to our opponent.

So team, skate 5x5.. & just play the game. The scoreboard will not look that bad.. &.. you might feel better.

I think we have Rawlings start both Vermont gms this weekend (just my opinion)... not the end of the world & pls be nice to Vermont :)

Who is the third? Guizor, Quailer and ..? Did we lose someone last night?

Maley, vs Dartmouth.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thie

So I'm finally starting to acknowledge the fact that there is a very good possibility of us not making it to the Hockey East tourney this year.

Unbelievable... What stings the most (and what I agree with above) is that this team has loads of talent which is evident from time to time. Inconsistency is the word this year. All I can say is that this better be a 'building year.' All of our rookies have been forced to take the reigns here... Hopefully when we put them in with Quailer and the others next year, it will all click.

Ugh... not walking away with a single point this weekend with two home games is not what we needed.

The worst part? We're only one point ahead of 9th place right now, and we've played 3 more league games that MC has.

Come on boys! We're in serious need of a few game winning streak and some leadership right about now...

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thie

I would go with Rawlings Friday, Mountain Saturday. Mountain deserves playing time, IMO, and I would also argue that he is better than Rawlings. Use a rotation.

I agree with almost all of the post by HuskyMan. I have been reluctant to say many negative things because this is not "my" team as it is to most of you, but I watch them a lot and I have grown to love 'em. So here goes:
Absolutely stupid, terrible, undisciplined penalty by Steve Silva last night. The sad thing is that as poorly as the Huskies were playing, they were in the game until then.

I questioned whether McNeely should be captain right off the bat and he has done exactly what I worried about. He is a good player, but a captain should have better discipline.

Seven shots on goal after two periods last night against an average opponent. SEVEN!!   Nothing more needs to be said about that because it's too obvious.

Much of the team was sleepwalking through the weekend. They had no intensity whatsoever and got what they deserved.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Wow, what a weekend of hockey. I like everyone of this board am very disapointed with losing two critical HE games at home. I thought we would at least get 2 pt's this weekend and even 1pt would have tied us with BU.
The key in the league is to win at home and go around 0.5oo on the road.....do that and you will end up with home ice. Probably not going to happen this year for us.

I don't think anyone should give up on this team strictly from what happened this weekend. How can anyone after what this team did vs. UML in the 3rd period of Saturday's game. When was the last time NU came from 4 goals down to tie it? I've been following the team for the last 12 years and I don't recall this ever happening. After NU tied it in the 3rd, I told people around me that no matter what happens in the remainder of the 3rd or OT, this is a "moral" victorty for this team and sometime later in the season will help this team. Let's face it, the players were probably dead tired for Sunday's game vs. Umass and you couple that with the fact that Umass had just been bashed by UNH & BU 7-3 in their last two games, it was a recipe for disaster.

Let's also not be so quick to judge Tyle McNeely and his ability to lead this team. His teammates selected him to lead this team as a junior....unless you know what happens in the locker room, I don't think we should blame Tyler for lack of leadership. This kid had 4 pts o the weekend and only 2 penalty minutes.

There is A LOT of hockey left to be played, so let's not get too down on this team at this point.

BTW, did anyone catch that cheap shot Wade MacLeod took at the Umass goalie in the 3rd period on Sunday? He hacked at him with his stick on the back of his legg where there is no padding....total *****hole. I would have liked to see one of the Umass players (Irwin or Braun) knock Wade on his *****.

I'm glad someone finally said it.

I've been especially critical of Silva all season, and I'm also getting sick of watching him. I forget which game it was, but NU was in the offensive zone, Silva was "tripped," he stayed down in the offensive zone seemingly waiting for a call when the opposing team was attacking down ice. The end result? There's an offsides call while he lazily gets up to skate towards the bench when NU gets a quick 2-on-1 turnover. I don't seem to remember him acting that selfish last year, but maybe I wasn't watching closely enough. That pretty much sums up what I've seen from him this year.

Didn't know that. Awesome. Yet another person I was expecting great things out of this year, resorting to acting like a ********* when he gets frustrated.

The one great thing that I've taken away from this year so far is that NU's got a LOT of freshman talent. More than I can remember in a while, actually. I'm still waiting for the Daniels brothers to step up, but I've been pretty impressed with Vermeersh, Newton, Vrolyk (although he's been kind of MIA as of late) and what the goalie tandem has been able to do with so much pressure. I'm dying to see Vermeersh and Quailer on the same line next year. I know a lot of people are really focused on the current year (as we should be), but this freshman class, for the most part, has me excited for the coming years.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

I wish I could say something to back people off the ledge with this team...but it's true. Their lack of desire is killing my own desire to watch them continually underwhelm me weekend after weekend.

Did that sentence make any sense? Probably not.

It's just the worst combination of events this year. The team has taken some tough losses and even tougher injuries early on, and we've dropped a couple backbreakers. So now we're seeing our guys play with hot heads and no discipline. A coach can only do so much to prep the team for a game. Once they step out on the ice, it's about individual poise and focus.

What makes it frustrating is that the last few years, NU has excelled at grabbing the maximum amount of talent out of its recruiting classes that have trouble competing with the BU's and BC's. You can steal a lot of games in this league with solid team defense, disciplined PK'ing, and a decent goaltender (example - 1-0 win over BU). But once you have a string of unfortunate events, the discipline can go out the window and the believability is gone. Last season we had believability. We believed in our goaltending. We believed in our team defense. We believed that anybody who came into Matthews Arena was in for a fight. We couldn't finish a game to save our lives, but we at least believed we'd be in it until the end.

This year, I have no idea what we believe.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

Re: Official 2009-2010 Northeastern University Huskies Season Thread - Life Post Thiessen

..i believe we have a good goaltender in Rawlings. He is still a freshman.. he will improve. We're 2-2 this yr so far.. of course i'd have liked some pts this weekend but we did beat Lowell up in Hanover just 10 days ago. Any way you slice it.. with all their seniors.. it was a tough outing & we beat 'em. Everyone had them as #1 or 2 in HE all pre-season so they have the talent from defense to goaltending this yr.

We had no business coming back in the Sat gm.. but something sparked the team... they did come back with the breakdown in UML discipline. Yes we lost in OT, but there was that fire us fans are looking for. It was there Saturday night.. we all saw it!

The UMass gm was our 1 bad gm post break, no question (some of that has to be the mental state of our freshmen losing a close gm prior night/ the other part.. our opponent that night was just hungrier & better prepared mentally).

I'll repeat.. i think we start Rawlings both gms this wknd.. he played well all wknd up in Hanover. We can start giving Mountain more time.. either at Matthews or once there's a couple back to back well played gms.

Still don't think its the end of the world. We may not get home ice.. but i don't think our hosts (whomever they be).. will have it easy either.

This wknd.. let's try to have playoff like mentality. Let's go team! And did i mention (like a lot of you have..).. i really like our freshmen class & it bodes well for the future. And by future i mean - coming months & years :)

Your glass half-full mentality is probably a necessity on this thread...:)

Perhaps the issue is more to do with consistency than a total lack of desire. This would be a natural product of having a young team that hasn't learned how to bring it night in and night out.

Having said that, I think all of us expected more out of our upperclassmen. We need somebody with a "lead me, follow me, or get out of my way" mentality to take the reigns.
