Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Sad news...student manager Brendan Burke, son of Toronto Maple Leafs GM and Team USA architect Brian Burke, was killed in a car accident on the way back to Oxford from Michigan State where he was visiting their law school. Brendan was considering applying to MSU and was prominently featured in a story a few weeks back by John Buccigross from espn.com.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Brotherhood and the Burke family.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

RHM, Reich actually broke Burleighs season shutout mark tonight, he has 5 on the season in half the games that Burleigh had that season.

Sad news on the Burke front, hope the team can keep focus and use that as some inspiration.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

First, thoughts and prayers are with the Burke family.

No worries, havent been back there in over a year. I banged my head against a wall one too many times with the clowns over there. Sounds like some people still can't grasp the fact that Miami is a hockey school now.

What else could it be?! Football has 5 wins in 5 years; basketball is never better than .500. There aren't any women's sports that are gonna take the front...this isn't UConn after all and i'm not sure Synchronized Skating counts as a sport. lol. I think hockey's the only thing left. Oh and BTW, they're #1 in the nation.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

My prayers got out to Branden's family and the entire RedHawk Hockey community. Also to the family of the passenger in the car who also passed away tonight..just heartbreaking news.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Thank you to everyone for your kind words they are greatly appreciated. The win last night was overshadowed because of the sad news. He was a great kid and will be missed. He definantly left his impact on the program and many peoples lives.

Stay safe over the buddy, we only got 13 inches little less than half of what is heading or has headed your way. If you get any cool pictures let me know!

Well more to your point here. Not sure if you read INCH.com's weekly chat they do over at ESPN sports nation. But one of their writers when asked about Reichard's hobey canidacy said that because Miami plays such a sound team game on both ends they don't have a clear cut hobey canidate. With 5 guys having atleast 24 points and your goaltender facing an average of 20 shots they didn't feel he had to be great for them to win. Well his final point was that Cody hasn't been asked to win a game for Miami yet so he needed to atleast see that to give him consideration. Hope he was watching last night, Cody flat out won that game for Miami last night. Wonderfull performance from him, and again Miami just finds a way to get one goal more than the other team.

Side note, Final for Kalamazoo: Western 7 Notre Dame 2

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Somehow made it down to Oxford from Columbus in the whiteout conditions. Even though I am very happy with the final score, it was a rough game to watch. A lot of holding-my-breath moments, but, as RHM pointed out, Cody came up big every time he was tested, and the d-corps made some spectacular and probably vital blocks as always (especially on a particular 3-on-1 rush).

Found out about Brendan right after the game, like a punch right in the gut. After my own sometimes-scary trek to Oxford a few hours earlier, the tragic news really struck a nerve. My thoughts and prayers are with the Burke and Reedy families.

Tonight is certainly going to be tough for the Brotherhood, as well as for the rest of us who knew or even knew of Brendan. I hope the Miami community turns out in force tonight to show their support for the team, because they're going to need it more than ever.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

The news about Brendan Burke got to many of us after last nights games. My condolences to the Burkes and to the Miami family. I met him a time or two, and while not knowing him well,it was fairly obvious he was like pretty much everything associated with Miami hockey, all class. And he seemed like such a good kid. Thoughts and prayers to everyone he touched.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Well I saw that coming! Redeagle can I say I told you so?

Bitter sweet win tonight, boys were emotional and that spilled onto the ice in good and bad ways. The good, what an offensive explosion and pure domination in all fazes of the game. Yes they were out shot but Lake didn't really test Connor until the third period. I believe there were 6 different goal scorers  ! The bad, too many penalties and they let things get too them too much. Understandably so with everything that went on in the last 24 hours and it didn't hurt them tonight. I am glad no one got hurt and maybe this will light the fire under the offense!

Sour note, if NMU would of won in regulation Miami would of clinched tonight! Oh well clinch at BG friday.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Good game boys. Love to see an offensive output that would be expected from the #1 team in the country pretty much all season, especially given the cirumstances from yesterday. Can definitely see why Acton and Scho were thrown out of games in the ND series though, given they were being dominated and gave up what 3 goals on 5 shots, but man haven't seen a team goon it up like that in awhile.

That Miele 1st goal was awesome. 2x1, fake the pass to Camper, Mahoney-Wilson gets faked out 5 feet in front of the net, and Miele walks it in after side stepping him without even shooting the puck. Some highlight reel moves in the game thats for sure.

Ferris takes 1 point. Mich State takes 2 points on the weekend. Denver needs overtime to take down Air Force. Western (re: Riley Gill) sweeps Notre Dame. Interesting weekend.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

11 different players with multi point games tonight. Including Knapp! He was the lone Redhawk without a point coming in to tonight, and now he has twice as many as Steffes :D

rhm did see this one coming. There definitely was something else going on out there last night. Lake is a really good team, IMO, so there is no way short of something mystical to explain last night. Shots were just finding holes, bounces were going Miami's way, and Miami made the plays. Lake made two mistakes, IMO, pulling BMW so fast, and then letting Miami emotion out. As Rico said, Miami was sort of defending their honor. It was not the game to try to out-emotion MU.

Was it nine goal-scorers? 15 players with points? two by Knapp? What the....

Yesterday and last night was so emotional, so sad at the rink. I think the difficult time for the players and coaches is still ahead, including the funeral on Tuesday. Obviously this kid was something very special to all who knew him.

As some like to say, death is part of life, but it shouldn't be, not at 21 and 18.

Have to wonder if they're going up to Massachusetts or not on Tuesday. Especially with a road series already this weekend, that would be a short week of practice. Then again, BG has a strange week also with a game in Ann Arbor on Tuesday night.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami Season Thread

Quick recruits update since I just hit the threads on MHT. In hindsight, this post has had to get quite a bit longer after our commits the past few months.

Biggs, Tyler (F) -- USNTDP
28 games played. 11-6--17. 51 PIM. 4 PPG. 1 SHG. 2 GWG.

Murphy, Connor (D) -- USNTDP U17

8 games played. 1-0--1. 4 PIM.
Hard to track his stats, especially as a defencemen, since USA Hockey site doesn't even track +/-. Still wonder why he has only played in 8 games.

Murphy, Cody (F) Tri City Storm
He's finally startin to get on some scoresheets.
39 games played. 7-3--10. -7. 22 PIM. 1 PPG. 1 PPA. 1 SHG. 1 GWG.

Hartman, Ryan (F) Chicago Mission Tier 1

36 games played. 22-18--40. 64 PIMs. 5 PPG. 4 GWG.
1st in points. 1st in goals. 1st(t) in PPG. 2nd in GWG. 2nd(t) in assists. 2nd in PIMs.
He's 7th in his league in points, not far off from second place, but this kid is running away with the scoring title.
Alex Galchenyuk (Chicago Young Americans)
http://mwehl.stats.pointstreak.com/playerpage.html?playerid=3135750&seasonid=4364
He's not committed anywhere yet, but looks like a stud.

Coleman, Blake (F) -- Indiana Ice (USHL)

Played half his season with a different club, so here's his stats with both teams. Looks like a big boy too, 5'11 206. Wait til he gets to the Gross Center and puts on more weight.
37 games played. 5-14--19. -9. 41 PIM. 1 PPG. 7 PPA.

Berschbach, Shane (F) -Indiana/USHL,

34 games played. 11-20--31. -3. 4 PIM. 3 PPG. 12 PPA. 1 GWG.

Second in goals, second in points, second in assists, 1st in powerplay points (which could be the reason for low +/-).

Wideman, Alex (F), Indiana Ice (USHL)

38 games played. 8-3--11. -8. 18 PIM. 1 PPG. 1 PPA.

Cook, Max (F) -- Indianapolis Ice (USHL)

36 games played. 12-19--31. +13. 18 PIM. 4 PPA. 1 SHG. 2 GWG.

Second on team in points, 1st in goals.

Bryon Paulazzo - Indiana/USHL

39 games played. 11-22--33. +21. 32 PIM. 2 PPG. 3 PPA.

Leads team in points, assists, and +/-. That is a ridiculous +- by the way.

Gacek, Alex (F) | Governor Academy (prep)

35 games played. 31-25--56. 11 PPG. 12 PPA. 6 GWG.
Leads team in goals, points, powerplay goals, game winning goals. second in assists.
3rd in the league in points. 2nd in league in goals (by one). 1st in league in powerplay goals. 1st in league in game winning goals.
The two kids ahead of him are 2, and 4 years older than Alex.

Mullin, Jimmy (RW) -- Shattuck St.Mary's (prep)

45 games played. 26-29--55. 18 PIMs.

1st in goals, 1st in points, 2nd in assists (by 1)
