Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Don't be afraid to tell us how you really feel about Metallica ;)

And graci

I'm not one of the people that feel they "sold out" with their first music video "One", but instead that they did when they wanted pop radio airplay by hiring Bob Rock and cutting their hair. Cliff Burton wouldn't have let it go this way, neither would Dave Mustaine.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Ha thanks for the info RHM. Good to see they're keeping Blasi's favorite official with us.

Seriously though probably wind up with all HEA, AH, or ECAC squads this weekend

Whoever it is it won't be refs who work your league games, as the NCAA mandates that. Hard to believe there are enough quality officials to limit it to just guys from the other 4 leagues... yeah I know how that sounds. So the NCAA will send crews from all but CHA or CCHA in case the final is teams from both.

We really don't have our own officials in the CHA. :) In Huntsville, our refs are usually CCHA refs flown in from the Midwest, while the linesmen are local guys. I know the refs for the CHA tournament final were CCHA guys. I don't know how the other member schools did it ... could be that BSU gets WCHA refs and Niagara gets ECAC guys. [Figure that RMU gets CCHA guys given proximity.]

Well that, and whats the point in sending in CCHA or CHA officials for potentially just one game on Sunday, and that's only if we don't have another CCHAvCHA matchup.

Oh I know, but had to throw that out there for JD since he was so fond of Shegos work in the CCHA tourny lol.

IHF- honest question, you saw UAH this year, albeit early in the year, but what was your assesment? What can we expect to see on saturday from an outsiders perspective?

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Wow it has gotten really quiet over here....Tons of chatter leading into the CCHA tourny and then nothing going into the national tourny?? Where is everyone??

The midwest regional thread has turned into a bunch of jackalls...i.e. arogant michigan fans  .

Really good interview today by Rico with cincinnati radio host Lance McCallister. He said something I thought was really cool. Apparently the team will be getting a police escort from the Indiana State patrol and will be driving by the crash site for Brendan Burke. So the team will be stopping at the crash site to pay final respects. Should be another touching scene. Anyone driving to Ft. Wayne from oxford will be taking the same route. Hopefully will get inspired play from the boys for their fallen companion. Easy to say they should show up, but anything can happen.

Wow. That's ... intense.

Ready for Saturday. It's gonna be fun.

Hard to say from what I saw since it was so early. Not taking anything away from UAH but Notre Dame played pretty poorly in my estimation. They turned the puck over a lot in the loss, and turnovers and a stupid penalty led directly to 2 of the 3 UAH goals. But then you can say that about a lot of goals I guess. They certainly aren't the most talented team, but I'm buying into Cole as a coach and the team is buying into the system that Cole put into place. They appeared to be really disciplined and positionally sound when I saw them, which means they can take advantage of mistakes, and any lackluster play on the part of their opponent. Teams that are in the right place a lot tend to steal a few wins. One of the things that struck me was I couldn't tell who was on the ice for UAH without seeing numbers. By that I mean it seemed like everyone on the team knew how to get to spots and be properly spaced and they didn't turn the puck over as a result. Notre Dame had very few odd-man breaks in either game.

GFM can correct this if I'm wrong, but I think they consistently get outshot by their opponents. I believe ND threw 50+ shots on them in the ND win and 40+ on them in the loss and outshot them in all 6 periods, mostly by wide margins. That lulls you into a false sense of security a lot of the time. But it can also be the key to winning. They'll give up the shots, you just have to make them good ones.

I've been here! But who am I kidding I have nothing better to do with my time, who wants to listen to a lecture when you can be on USCHO?!?

Yeah, we get a lot of SOGA, but they're usually low-percentage shots. I just re-watched the CHA championship game, and most of the chances were from outside. Now, you might argue that this was a Niagara strategy, but I'd disagree---they like to slash to the net with their speed. And, well, they did get there, but when they did, Talbie was up to the challenge.

I'll agree with IHF that UAH capitalized on Notre Dame's penalties. [I still don't know how that second consecutive penalty on Thang was called. Jeff Jackson was trying not to complain about it post-game, but then I nodded my head at him when the subject came up. I think he felt better about doing it knowing that a UAH guy was agreeing with him.[1]]

IHF is also right about Cole instilling discipline in his players. It's a breath of fresh air after the Doug Ross era, when UAH was routinely in the top ten [and often top five] of PIM/G in D-I.

That said, our talent pool gets better with each incoming class. Cole, Luongo, and McCabe are really doing yeoman's work in recruiting kids to Huntsville, which has been hard with a shaky league and is now probably harder with no league at all. We're a unique situation, though, and that's attractive to some kids. [As are year-round golf and Southern women. Ahem.]

[1] I recap for USCHO, including that weekend. I typically try to take all my UAH gear off [2] before I go interview anyone.

[2] Press boxes are for professional writers. I'm a professional rocket scientist. ;)

I don't get why more people in that topic don't have him on ignore. He's really enjoying trolling.

Because he is actually pretty funny as long as you understand what the concept of trolling is, which it seems the majority of posters on this board do not  .

I understand it completely, and there are a few posters here who do it creatively and make me laugh now and again. UMichrulz is just one of those fans who believe rooting for particular establishments make them tougher, or more attractive, or better endowed, or something else that it absolutely doesn't. It reminds me of all the people who go to games and get drunk and tough and think that by rooting for their boys I am somehow going to be intimidated by them. It is really pathetic when one thinks about it. I have had that little idiot on ignore since it resurfaced last season and just wish if people felt the need to respond to something he posts they'd do it WITHOUT quoting him. Most posters here range from inoffensive to truly fun and interesting. But there are enough that are horrible netizens to sometimes make it hard to bother with some of the threads.

2 more days before the boys hit the ice at the war memorial.

Amen!

Also thanks for the analysis. I know it was the opening weekend but you have seen them visually so it can make somewhat of a difference to have an unbiased opinion from someone who has seem both teams.

Miami routinely out shoots its opponents, but there are a lot of people who don't understand the difference between quality and non quality shots. Miami usually waits for quality shots and it is a flaw at times. They don't really rely on the "get pucks to the net theory". However something Miami does great not give up quality shots. They might do the best of anyone at keeping people to the outside and challenge shots. They do a great job at getting in the shooting lanes and blocking a lot of shots. One thing is for sure, UAH will have to work for their chances. However at this time of year, everyone has to work for everything.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

RHM - I've been tracking over on the Region thread. But I give up. I know it's not all of the UofM fans. But that one kid is a flipping *****!!! I am coming back to the fold here.

Looking forward to tomorrow's starting round. Can't be there, but with y'all in spirit.

Ranking tomorrow's games:

#1 - UNH vs. Cornell - fantastic matchup. We played UNH pretty well, but def a great team. Don't know much about Cornell, but i hear great things about that goalie.

#2 - Vermont vs. Wisconsin - By all accounts, Wisc should blow away. But Vermont showed they could play tough in the tourney last year. Definitely looking for a few fireworks in this one.

#3 - NMU vs. SCSU - Not sure about this one. St. Cloud scores a lot of goals, but we all know that Stewey has that ability to play really really well and keep his team in it. Also keep in mind that NMU can score a few as well and SCSU is giving up an even 3.00 GAA. Poor defense is not a good recipe for success in NCAA.

#4 - DU vs. RIT - I don't see DU being too flat in this one. Should be a bit of a snoozer.
