Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

D2D

Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey
Over the past month or so I've put together a list of hockey terms that most good hockey fans should at least be familiar with or, put another way, non-hockey fans wouldn't have a clue what they mean.

Many on the list have become popularized only relatively recently, while others have been around and survived the test of time. Others are unique to the sport, while others you'll typically only see in print or hear on broadcasts, as opposed to casual conversation in the stands or between periods.

The following list is by no means complete, and in fact I'm curious how many other hockey terms can be added by fellow USCHO posters...if for no other reason it's the offseason and we need to keep our hockey minds sharp! ;)

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

Some of these I've never heard of before...maybe they're only used north of the border? Like "onion bag" maybe? Clapper? Guts of the ice? I'll go with them, at least for now, but I may pare down the list at some point. I'm also adding "screen(ed)", "dump in" and "grinder".

Always thought Al Shaver was the best play by play guy. A favorite description, or term he used frequently was Barrett / Hartsy / Giles / Maxwell...insert another North Star D, "staples" the opposing forward to the boards. Al would say it loudly and enthusiastically. Yeah...staples, I like that one.
