Off season notes and news....

Re: Off season notes and news....

I was really hoping to see how Marian would do under a second year with him! I wonder how this will affect the incoming recruits and overall impression on future prospects....

Re: Off season notes and news....

I saw that last night. I wondered where Largen was going, and why he left Marian, if it's for reasons other than their chronic underfunding of the program. He did a nice job there last year.

Marian athletic department shows growth -

As Director of Athletics at Marian University, Jason Bartelt is always looking for the chance to attract future Sabre student-athletes.

This past winter, Marian began its first season of men’s volleyball. A few years back, track and field became a varsity sport. Just before that, it was women’s hockey. In 2017-18, men’s lacrosse will hit the field for its inaugural season.

There’s no doubt about it — the Sabres have expanded greatly as an NCAA Division III athletic department in the past decade.
...
Although the Marian administration has certainly become familiar with the process of adding new sports, it doesn’t make it any easier. Challenges include finding the right head coach, attracting student-athletes and getting the program to the point where it’s able to field successful teams.

“It starts with hiring a coach. You’ve got to get the right person on board because that person has the responsibility of going out and recruiting the players,” Marian University President Andrew Manion said
...
“It takes a few years to get competitive. That’s a challenge you know is going to come and you build into the timeline of the program. Obviously there’s limited physical resources. You’ve got to figure out your schedules in terms of field time and locker room time, but when you start a sport, you think those things through and have your athletic director make sure everybody gets accommodated.”

As a Division III university, a roadblock Marian doesn’t need to worry about is funding. Unlike Division I and II colleges that offer athletic scholarships, all student-athletes at Marian pay tuition. Facility upgrades and equipment and transportation costs, among other things, add up when it comes to college sports, but for the most part athletics at Marian can sustain themselves.
...
Bartelt and Manion indicated that women’s lacrosse would join the university’s athletics offerings in the future to pair with the men’s team.

Re: Off season notes and news....

They can sustain themselves. Sure. They can spin it all they want. That's why Wise jumped ship to go coach for another school (one that was the absolute bottom of the barrel in D-3 at the time) in the same league after some success at Marian, and why Aitken chose to return to SNC as an assistant coach instead of remaining a head coach at Marian. And now Largen is gone after one nice year.

Sorry, not buying the story.

"It takes a few years to get competitive." -
Apparently this didn't bode well if their expectations -
The Sabres went 18-7-3 overall in Largen’s first season and 15-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Sabres finished second in the South Division before falling to St. Norbet in the conference tournament semifinals.

And two of the last three years under Wise were 19 and 20 win seasons as well. Aitken was just over .500 as a coach, so the whole thing didn't crash and burn under him, either.

Something's wrong internally there with their hockey programs, whether it's finances, expectations, priorities withing the athletic department, whatever. My guess is finances and priorities. A few years ago a Marian-Adrian series got bumped to Sunday-Monday afternoon due to a beer league tournament in the arena that weekend. I'm not exaggerating.

I've had conversations with some that were close to the Marian program a few years back. I will not divulge who they were with, or the content of those emails, but I will say that I have reason to suspect that the Marian hockey programs are underfunded to the point where this is happening now.

Sarcasm was intended.

Re: Off season notes and news....

I see on the other site where they're bringing in 14 players as well. Are they feeding a club team as well? I think I only see 3 seniors on last year's roster on the stats sheet.

Re: Off season notes and news....

Their whole athletic department is underfunded. The AD used to be the baseball coach and does not understand hockey or costs associated with fielding a competitive team. The Soccer teams don't even get DISCOUNTS on things such as cleats and have to return their track suits at the end of the year!

Eventually that's going to reveal itself in the W-L records. The fact that it hasn't yet is a great tribute to the jobs that Wise, Aitken, and Largen have done.

People can post all the pointless PR puff pieces they want...and it won't change the fact that you're completely right here.

Boak Adds Pietrangelo to Men’s Hockey Coaching Staff

During his playing career, Pietrangelo suited up for Division III Finlandia University of the NCHA, located in Hancock, MI. The defenseman played three seasons for Finlandia before retiring due to injury.

Pietrangelo played in 36 career collegiate games for the Lions. He also played junior hockey for the Metro Jets of the CSHL. In three years of high school hockey with Traverse City West High School, Pietrangelo led his school to three straight Big North Conference championships.
Pietrangelo is a 2015 graduate of Ferris State University with a Bachelor's degree in Health Care Services Administration.

"I am excited to work with Coach Boak and continue to build on the momentum from the past few years of Roos hockey," Pietrangelo added.
