The GOP does not need (or want) the whafflers like you... the same whafflers that voted Obama in to begin with. I could care less if you think I am driving you away from the GOP... I highly doubt that you and have any of the same values in common and quite frankly could less if we did or did not.

Problem is some of you think more money = better care... that's the not the case even in the same state, sometimes it's better/cheaper for less care in the hospital, but if the hospital is ONLY concerned about making money then they will "advice" you to stay longer even if it makes no difference in your health care. That's where regulated industry makes more sense ... monopoly-public good-stable services-stable profits.

The basic premise of medicaid/care going bankrupt in the not too distance future is not the CURRENT cost, but the % rate of increase in the last 10-20 years extended into the future. Just like we knew 20%+ increase in house prices was unsustainable, the current 8-10%+/yr increase in healthcare (insurance) is unsustainable as the compounding interest makes the base bigger. The last estimate was that if we can reduce/control it to 2%/yr or so then medicaid/care will be fine.

So instead of dealing with the COST issue, they are once again talking about AFFORDABILITY issue... just like in housing and education. We'll make it affordable for everyone to get X and ignore the cost issue until our tax burden or debt becomes unmanageable.

Yes, regulation of hospitals, insurance and pharma-device industry - as I said many times below neither left or right wanted to tackle that one.

Again, I say health care is a commodity; go get a job that offers some sort of health care, and pay a smaller percentage and a co-pay when you have to go. This is capitalism, this is the American way. Not everyone will be able to go to college, can go to college, or is mentally capable to be in college; why should anything be handed to those who are too lazy? Should everyone be allowed to get into Law school? B school? Med school? We need competition to survive! In the meantime I say we try to control the borders, and clamp down on illegal workers, and companies/people that hire illegals; and you'll save some time/energy/cost in the ER as well.

Houses, cars, Brooks Brother's dress shirts, cell phones, Wii, food and health care, etc. are not basic rights guaranteed by the any constitution. Make a F' ing life for yourself, and stop being a burden on tax-paying society. How come scores of people were able to come from Europe 1880-1929 to the USA, and do this without any help from the government?! Our grandparents were not politically correct, apologetic wussies like this current administration.

Population is exponential. Cost is exponential. Why on earth would anyone believe there would be no tax increase to the American middle class to pay for this health care bill!?!?

I just can't wait to see the proposed War Tax for those who make over 250K per year... I bet we'll see the Hollywood types like, the Susan Sarandens, coming out of the wood work demanding Obama end the wars - because they will not want to fund it!

Really, liberals, lefties, those who voted for Obama, answer up!

OMG!!!! People earning more than 250K individually or 500K as couples pay half a % more in Medicare/Medicaid taxes! Its the.....

Well it's written like our tax code. 2000 pages with new taxes, added taxes based on income, subsidy progression based on income. So 13% (30million uninsured) can buy an insurance with 60% coverage or 80 or 90 (with deductions)... And if you don't buy this coverage you'll be fined $750 or 2% of your income which is greater. I'm thinking it'll be at least $100-400/month for the 60 coverage or $1200-$4800/yr ... so people might pay the fine instead... and so the poor people get to fund the healthcare for the better off. too funny.

About the only decent thing is removing the practice of denying coverage and the anti-trust exemption ... which seems to be in conflict in house vs senate.
I'm not sure how all those new taxes on insurance companies/medical etc... will work when you don't put a lid on rate hikes or how many loopholes congress created in the 2000 pages.
We just increased the base customers and insurance companies will hike the rates to "compensate" which means we'll be seeing even higher tax rates or we'll go bankrupt even faster than the last projections. I'm not sure how that equates to controlling the health care cost increases. sure everyone will be covered but either we gonna have to have death panels *limiting coverage* or lower the over all coverage to 50/50 or even 20% at which point it probally will be cheaper paying the fines and taking your chances with medicaid.

You're missing something major in this analysis. Lets use your math at face value for this example. A better off person, making 100K a year, declines insurance and pays the fine of 2% of income, or 2K. Using the upper end of your estimate, they're making out like bandits, since they would be paying 4.8K for insurance, or a net gain of 2.8K a year. This isn't the whole story however, as 4.8K insurance a year is pre-tax, thus saving you 20% of this total or approx 1K. So, in reality you're saving 1.8K every year by not taking insurance even if its cost is at the top of your spectrum.

The problem is one choice gives you something, while the other gives you nothing. By paying a whopping 1,800 a year (out of 100K in income) you get health coverage. Get injured without insurance and pay out of pocket, and watch how quickly you blow through 1,800 in a month, let alone in a year. Why pay a fine that gets you nothing, instead of paying a little more and getting something for it???

Now lets take the mid point of your range, 3K for insurance. That's about break even for our hypothetical person from a dollar standpoint, but not from a value standpoint because again, one approach gets you nothing, while the other gets you something.

As it was written Medicare was supposed to be like social security. Insurance for later in life that you paid into now. Essentially, you get what you pay for.

I realize that the rich pay in way more than they get out, but does that give anyone the right to exacerbate the problem?

Social Security and Medicare were never supposed to be insurance programs.

They are and always have been wealth transfer programs (ie, welfare) - today's workers give money to today's elderly. The idea of the social security trust fund always was and always will be a myth.

There's impliedly a societal promise that tomorrow's workers will pay the same for tomorrow's elderly(which happen to be today's workers), but I doubt many people my age believe these programs will still be around when it's our turn to benefit from them.
