Seth Meyers did better than I expected at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner faux-roast. He probably told a couple too many Trump jokes. Teh Donald really didn't look pleased, though it was hard to tell whether he was miffed more by the jokes or by the laughter.

Read today that the % of people paying no NET federal taxes is now 51%.

Median household income in US (2009) $49,777.

FTFY - FICA, gas taxes, and the like mean plenty of people in that 51% pay federal taxes.

why is that meaningless? 51% of the people get as much, or more, back as they pay in federal income taxes. (my bad on leaving out the word income)

Great sentiment, but taxes and the budget are determined by people who think "compromise" is a dirty word.

Except that doesn't really fix it, because social security and medicare are taxes on income that are levied as a percentage of income earned. So it's not even necessarily correct to say that 51% of people pay no net federal income taxes.

People not having a taxation stake in the federal government is not meaningless, but that group needs to be properly defined, not turned into a cherry-picked talking point that has nothing to do with reality.

You left out gas taxes and the other talking points on the list.

20% of the tax paying people pay 70% of the federal taxes.

Is that reality?

Sure, let's look at the overall tax burden and not just the burden due to income taxes.

The thing with the income taxes, though, is that they all appear on the W2 and they all appear on our tax returns. Yes, we won't be owing a payment or getting a refund on Social Security or Medicare taxes, but they're still taxes as a percentage of income earned and they still appear prominently in any person's tax work-up. Gas taxes are different from that in that we don't even think about their existence as we pay at the pump. All we think about is, wow, $3.999/gal is a lot for gas!

20% of the people paying 70% of the taxes doesn't tell me much. Do those 20% of the people have 70% of the income and 70% of the wealth? Maybe they should be paying 70% of the taxes. Maybe they should be paying <em>more than</em> 70% of the taxes.

It's not fair that 20% of the population pays 70% of the taxes. Especially when they're the ones out creating jobs.

Could always tax people based on net worth, given the fact that is a much truer measure of wealth than income. Of course, trying to do that could be a nightmare given the need to track the value of all asset types.

In line with the discussion,

Texas GOP is complaining about a lack of govt funds to deal with western wildfires. Outside of FL and possibly CA, Texas has to be getting as much in the way of 'relief' funds from the federal government as anyone. Isn't this the group that advocates small government?

Likewise, Perry is declining an invitation from Obama to meet during his visit there. Evidently Perry did not want to travel the 800 miles from Austin to El Paso to discuss wildfires and border security. I guess the TX GOP didn't necessarily campaign on running to solve the nations problems in a bipartisan way.
