So THAT's what became of Edward Furlong.

Wow. That's just mean.

Then again...

Even though I spent 11 years in Houston, the decision not to place one of the shuttles there slipped by me. But, now that I think of it, what possible reason could there be for not putting one of the shuttles at the Johnson Space Center? First word spoken by a man on the moon was "Houston." All of our space missions, including those by the shuttle, were controlled from Houston. All astronauts trained and lived in Houston. And still do. How does NASA or whoever made this decision justify it?

Agree. NYC? Really? That has as much relevance to the space program as, well, nothing.

Sick joke: perhaps they figured that Texas already got Columbia...

Maybe my sarcasm detector broke, but where did NYC come from?

Obama has to know what he's getting into. He's a career opportunity for local reporters in places like Texas. Either be prepared to deal with partisan hackery or don't do it.

That's exactly what I'd like to know. "Enterprise" - the space shuttle prototype - is to be retired and on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space museum in NYC.

Ahh, I get it now. I wasn't aware of that one. Based on the article, I thought the controversy was just about the Endeavor going to California (still a blue state).

I don't think anyone has too much heartburn with CA - the shuttles were physically built there and frequently landed at Edwards AFB, etc. CA was definitely an integral part of the program.

I'd be a whole lot more suspicious that there might be political motives if they were going to swing states rather than solid blue states. Why would Obama (or any other Democrat) feel like they would want to sway it to NY?

I was working in Houston when the Challenger blew up. I'm telling you, it was like a punch in the solar plexus. Not that pro forma babbling about what a tragedy this was. For the most part, these people were our neighbors, our friends, their kids went to Clear Lake HS, they shopped at the Galleria, went to Astros games in the dome. It was like losing members of the family. It is no exaggeration to say the entire city was in mourning.

The JSC already gets 750K visitors a year--it's not exactly an alligator farm on the side of the road. And adding the shuttle to that facility would only increase that total. I'm not inclined to conspiracy theories. But, these days, NASA is fighting for a mission and the funding for that mission. The president has cancelled many NASA programs, it's not exactly impossible to imagine Administrator Bolden making decisions he thinks will curry favor with the administration. With a list of those decisions helpfully provided by one of the little Obamas.

This is a terrible decision, however and why ever it was made, and needs to be reversed. It's like that picante sauce commercial: "NEW YORK CITY!!!"

There are only two locations where there can be no discussion about placing the shuttles: The JSC and the KSC. Any other locations pale in comparison to those. Put shuttles in Rhode Island for all I care. But one needs to be in Florida and one needs to be in Houston, period.

Agree with this, for sure. CA is definitely behind those two, but I used to work in Palmdale at the intersection of Challenger and Columbia - CA is on the list.

No complaint there. I just begin with the "automatics" and then work down the list. Putting shuttles on the coasts is not, per se, a bad idea IMO, it's just that in this case the placement comes at the expense of Houston. Everyone understands that LBJ threw his considerable weight around to get a major NASA presence in Houston. But that historic political fact doesn't detract from the central role Houston has played, and presumably will play, in our space efforts. I ask the rhetorical question: other than politics, what could possibly explain this snub to Houston? .

Not quite all. IIRC, Houston took control of spaceflights starting with Gemini IV (McDivitt / White).

But, I digress. Politics rears its ugly head. Will Congress fix this in the (lack of) appropriation process?

You're right, but the point remains the same. We all remember those exciting early Mercury missions when all of the guys with the right stuff were in radio contact with mission control. . .in Brooklyn. :D
