Regardless, we need to be willing to tell irresponsible people that they are not able to stick their hands into our pockets. When that happens it'll be amazing how many fewer irresponsible people we'll have out there.

This would only be possible if we stop teaching people that all occurances of bad fortune are evils perpetrated by someone else. Until people re-learn the concept of personal accountability and responsibility for one's own actions, there will be an ever-increasing number of citizens looking to the government for the imposition of their version of social justice.

The supporters of these reform ideas would obviously want them to replace the income tax - however, Congress, as it is currently comprised, would never EVER replace the current tax system with one of those proposals. If anything, the current administration would hit us with a VAT on top of the income tax system.

I completely agree that the VAT, if we get one, will be on top of the income tax. The flat tax or consumption tax, if we ever get either, will replace the income tax. It's up to the public to vote for Congressmen and Congresswomen who will fight for either a flat or consumption tax.

I completely agree that the VAT, if we get one, will be on top of the income tax. The flat tax or consumption tax, if we ever get either, will replace the income tax. It's up to the public to vote for Congressmen and Congresswomen who will fight for either a flat or consumption tax.

I also think that those backing either the Flat or Fair Tax need to come together, hash things out and get behind one of the plans. Its not doing either party any good to split the support for change away from the current system.

But that would actually require Congress to get serious about overhauling our tax scheme, and then being able to articulate why the current system of rabbit holes, exemptions, etc. should be done away with in favor of some other system.

You know, there was a time when Congress had people of various political stripes who could make a cogent arguments of that nature without resorting to personal or political attacks for their own gain or edification. It would be nice if a few more of that type were elected this fall.

Why would a VAT be in addition to an income tax, but a consumption tax (aka, a sales tax) would not? Especially when they're basically the same freaking thing?

Because most people who support those taxes don't take issue with the loopholes. Closing them is just a side benefit of those tax systems.
