Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Why do I got the impression there's a general attitude of "we have to look like we're trying"... STOP TRYING... that's the problem in the first place. All these smart people aren't smart enough to let things alone for awhile.

edit: haven't these morons yet realized we need the double-dip in order to flush the crap from the system. There's just a lot of crap in the whole wash... and any solution must not add more crap. Stimulus is just that... crap... because the problem now is the debt itself... otherwise the Eurozone wouldn't be having problems. Lets not fight fire with gasoline folks... we'll be back 6 months later in the same spot.

I think you meant "a worse spot."

In case anyone wasn't convinced: WSJ take on it.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

I'm no economist, but it seems commonsense to me too. If the big stimulus only delayed the inevitable correction and made it that much worse by adding to the debt, why in God's name would you do it again? Let's get the pain over with already.
It's like continually icing a cancerous limb, to numb it when it should have been amputated to preserve a life.

OK, I'm a little muddled. It's late.
But I hope this story is made up. It's puzzling that the fed would willfully ignore a basic economic indicator (money supply) out of Keynes worship, or whatever.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Look at Greece. That is in our future if no action is taken to deal with our debt problem and future obligations on the entitlement side of things. You simply cannot promise large benefits to retirees that last 20+ years when the ratio of workers to retirees is dropping. That approach is simply unsustainable. Of course, our gutless politicians won't address this until it's too late - which means the cuts at that point will be far more severe - and people will react to it with predictable outrage.

The current approach of borrowing and spending our way to prosperity simply won't work; at some point, people will stop buying our T-bills which will force interest rates higher. If you think people have a hard time paying 6% mortgages, imagine what will happen when those rates double.

As for the Fed, they seem to be perpetually unaware of the consequences of their monetary policy. They've already helped create two gigantic asset bubbles (dot com and housing). Obviously, they haven't (nor will they) learn their lesson when it comes to attempting to manipulate the economy.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Everybody sharpen their talking points, the administration is formally releasing their national security policy today.

Let the right wing mad libs begin: "naive," "irresponsible," "appeasement," "Jimmy Carter," "hollow army," and everybody's favorite, "troubling." :p

It will be promoted through four “pillars” of American action: renewed and expanded alliances; strength abroad through strength at home, with an emphasis on education, clean energy, technology, and innovation; support for international development and a revitalized diplomatic corps; and promotion of democracy and human rights

The English-to-Palin translation:

* renewed and expanded alliances: the SecDef will now take direction from French mimes
* strength abroad through strength at home, with an emphasis on education, clean energy, technology, and innovation: Oh nooooooooes, The Socialism!!!!111!!1
* support for international development and a revitalized diplomatic corps: The State Department is Communist; the Peace Corps is gay
* promotion of democracy and human rights: quaint, outmoded notions and/or class warfare

What a crazy idea.

BTW, if anybody finds a link to the actual document please post it. I haven't even on the WH site. They may not be releasing it before the formal presser.

Come on now, do we really have to play the blame Bush game some more? I didn't even vote for the guy. My point was just that phrases like "promoting democracy and human rights" are inherently silly, because they can be used to justify anything from behind the scenes campaigns to full out wars.

Also, where do we choose to "promote democracy and human rights"? I can guess it won't be in Myanmar or Tibet.

Same point here. Good use of the all-purpose "blame Bush" shibboleth.

Remember when Obama betrayed Iranians yearning to be free? Seems like last year... hey, wait, it was last year.

edit: Kepler... you know better than to apologize for a dictatorship. I know exactly where you will do with this... blame Bush for doing X, Y, Z which you feel is harmful which made Iran do something... guess what, they were doing it anyways. They were building a nuclear program during the Bush administration... the George HERBERT Walker Bush administration. Their intentions were never positive and were hardly a reaction to George Walker Bush.... but they played you along real good.

Some of you guys act as if the Iran stuff is a new thing... it isn't. You act as if the theocracy was a new thing... it isn't. You act as if Iran was actually going to have some pre-tense of a quasi-democracy... it hasn't. And when the moment came to support the people of Iran... you didn't.

Remember when Eisenhower betrayed Poland because he was a Red?

cute... but not that cute... where was Obama when the Iranian people needed him? He was keeping quiet in his policy of "realism"... instead of speaking up for them and encouraging them. That's some real "leadership" there... as the regime turned into a full dictatorship. Sure, all that "no pressure" is going to make them a democracy now, isn't it?

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Psst. RC. That's a strawman.

so, you're not going to do it then? Good to know. Stop apologizing for them. Don't blame Bush for Iran's sins. That'd be like saying "well, we knew he was going to hit his wife when the officer left... its the officer's fault."
