Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

I think I agree with this, however the current regulation bill is a joke. Letting Chris Dodd, who has been in the pockets of bankers for a long long time be the leader for the bill is shameful, and I have no problem with anyone who opposes it.

You're so right. David Vitter would be a much better leader.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

I'm still hoping the tea partiers will merge with the Modern Whig Party. I might be tempted to join.

Actually that sounds interesting. One piece is a big draw...solutions over ideology and bickering. The other not so much...big national defense, which appears to go against the solutions approach on the international front. Why not carry science/economic advancement and partnering on solutions both domestically and internationally?

Well, I've been convinced that there's a good role for the feds in science research (a lot of good has come out of NASA over the years). But as long as there are loose cannon dictatorships out there, that model of intellectual property sharing can't be applied around the globe. Just with the good guys. And since the nutjob dictators still outnumber the good guys, a strong military remains essential.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Very interesting link, thank for posting.

One thing, though. The author maintains that this is "a heavily anti-Wall-Street Congress in power right now." I would say that on the contrary both Congress and the executive branch seem to be heavily compromised in their oversight by a cozy connection with major powers on Wall Street, and that's part of the problem. Many of the top government advisors are the very people who presided over the epic fail of the financial sector.
Wall Street, the Federal Reserve, Congress, and the Executive branch have been in bed together since early last century, and yes a lot of that activity has been incestuous.

The current Congress needs to at least put up the appearance of being anti-Wall Street, because Wall Street gambling was a big part (not the only part) of the country's economic woes. How far they go with this Goldman Sachs fraud inquiry may show us if they really are serious.

I think they should be pro-Wall Street but actually have a regulatory approach that works. We don't need to be a weak economic country, that won't help our long-term situation in the world. The idea that the only alternative to reckless concepts like derivatives is to declare marshall law on all financial activity is an overreaction that will lessen our already declining role in global economics.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Though prosecuting fraud is not "anti-business" any more than calling high sticking is "anti-hockey."

It's unclear to me that there is even a national economy any more except on paper. The dominant corporations are multinational, and their rise or decline may not have much bearing on, say, the rise and decline of currencies, trade deficits, etc, except insofar as they hold nations hostage by being too big to fail.

Electric power has no nationality; maybe capital doesn't (or shouldn't) either. Identifying a business interest as "American" sounds like a way to give it a privileged position relative to citizens who might otherwise regulate it. That privilege cannot be extended back to the consumer or worker by the company because that would be business suicide. So any advantage we extend is, basically, charity.

More post-partisanship I see.

I rip on a Democratic leader, so that automatically suggests I think a Republican could do a better job?

What? I was agreeing with you. Someone like David Vitter would bring a great deal of credibility if he wrote the bill. You have already voiced your disdain of anything Dodd-related; you have another senator in mind?

Oh, I apologize then. I thought you were referencing Vitter's affections for the ladies of the night.

Part of the problem with the current attempts at "reform" is that the bill is trying to reframe the entire financial system in one shot. Want to reform derivatives trading? Fine, but why are you trying to establish a "consumer protection agency" in the same breath? Is someone marketing CDS on payday loans? Are community banks, making all sorts of crappy commercial and RE loans, less threatening than some swaps trader in NYC? As a consequence, you have a Balkanized opposition that pits broker-dealers against community banks who are fighting the larger commercial banks who are against the non-bank lenders. Moreover, you have internal fighting between the regulators over who does what, e.g., will the Fed's power be expanded or curtailed? Will the OTS survive? Throw in an assessment of $50B against the largest players "to protect the taxpayers against future bailouts, when the current tab is exponentially higher, and I have to agree that this bill doesn't do shiat to protect against future bailouts or lessen the "socialized risks" we found in the last mess.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

In my book, both sides are unreasonable on this issue and for the left to claim only the right is hypocritical is just plain dumb.

How is the left unreasonable? basically, their position is, it's the woman's decision to make, it's a private matter,so everyone else just butt out.

To me being a builder and problem solver is a philosophy that one largely believes in or not. Rather than saying we believe in a total partnership philosphy, which stops at the borders and then we call the shots...makes no sense. Regardless, the uber strong defense goes against the efficient govt which appears to be their other strong plank.

Don't get me wrong...it sounds like that party has potential. But in the end, its like the party realizes it would be cool to chuck ideology, be enlightened and partner to make progress...but has also decided that it still wants to still be conservative. The result looks like its a bit schizophrenic.

I think the main reason for that is, I think it was founded by a group of veterans (lots of love for both strong defense and the national payroll/VA benefits etc.). If they try to broaden their appeal, they will have to both refine positions and ignore one-issue voters. That's probably not a winning proposition nowadays. sadly.
Same thing with the Tea Party. It'll never organize nationally because it's a collection of single-issue voters all with their own issues. If they ever sit down to hash it out for a national campaign, they'll end up killing each other.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

This is great. For the second time in a week, Keith Olbermann and his salivating boytoy Rover were both pwnd by video evidence to the refutation of their most hysterical yipping.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

How is the left unreasonable? basically, their position is, it's the woman's decision to make, it's a private matter,so everyone else just butt out.
Example:
Regarding abortion, birth control or gay rights, what you seek to do is give one person the right to overrule another on these decisions. That's putting one group of people over another. You as a pharmacist do not have the right to impose your personal view over another persons in dispensing a legal product. To enact such a law is to adopt a preference. You as a person do not have the right to unilaterally ban a medical procedure which may be necessary to save a woman's life. To do so would be to put one person's views over another ones.
If one feels (correctly IMHO) that a women has the right to choose whether or not to use BCPs or have an abortion, why is it not also a pharmacist +/or physician's right to refuse said service in a non-emergent situation? Is it not a private matter for either party? Wouldn't enacting a law forcing a pharmacist to dispense a legal product be putting one person's views over an other's?
