Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Nice, one is about his religous beliefs and the other someone commited murder. Did his words kill you? or anyone else for that matter? I'll bet a majority of people in Alabama feel the same way he does.

Wow. Just wow. Is that the kind of country you want to live in? Majority rules?

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Honestly, I can't understand why someone who is a non-Christian would want this man to claim them as his spiritual brother or sister. I certainly wouldn't want it of someone who's faith I didn't share myself. Are you seriously offended? Or just pulling strings?

So he doesn't have a right to his religous beliefs? Majority might be better than being ruled by the Banks and defense contractors

He has every right to practice whatever religious beliefs he chooses, but as governor he is not supposed to play favorites. He also is not supposed to lead attempts at conversion (or do you think "I want to be your brother" has some other meaning?). Am I offended? No, I wouldn't go so far as to say he offends me. I don't live in his state and I plan to never go to his state, but it does bug me when a politician tries to use his choice of fairy tales as justification for his policies or a general "I'm better than you" argument. If I lived there it would sure as hell offend me.

Freedom of requires that there be freedom from. What reason is there not to be concerned about people who want to impose their religious beliefs on others when they are in positions of power?

The US is a republic so that the there is supposed to be no tyranny of the majority.

I'm with you. I wasn't thinking, before, in terms of his saying this from the governing platform (which he was). A bad thing.

.

Has he done that yet?

Fact remains, if I'm a Jew, Muslim, or god forbid athiest in Alabama right now, I'm peeved and probably slightly concerned that I will be discriminated against by the government.

Thankfully, I'm not in Alabama, and even if I were I'm nominally Christian (though I don't know if he counts Catholics as Christians...many Southerners do not.)

So no, I'm not losing any sleep over it. But it's still a freaking retarded thing for a state governor to say.

If you're any of those things you're screwed anyway.

I mean, seriously, the only Muslims in Alabama have to be incarcerated. There is no other reason why they would choose to remain there.

Countdown to the fundies using this story to somehow claim they are being oppressed in 5, 4, 3...

Don't disagree, he is playing to his base just like any politician.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Must be easy to convert people in Alabama

I said "trying to convert". I'll assume you aren't really this dense and it's all just an act.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Rick Santorum
"The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn't want to answer -- is that human life a person under the constitution?" and Barack Obama says no. Well if that human life is not a person, then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say 'now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.”

Translation: Too bad the Darkies aren't still considered property.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Wow. Based on the quote alone, I never would have realized the fact that Santorum wants slavery reinstated. Thanks for the help on this one Rev. Al

Thanks. I try to cut through all the BS and get right to the heart of the matter.

Just out of curiosity, what would be your interpretation of Santorum saying that it is remarkable for a black man to ponder what is and isn't considered human under the Constitution?

I read it as the same irony that any gay, woman or racial, ethnic or religious minority would ever back a populist conservative -- that way lies madness. Being on the business end of Dred Scott should cure someone of trying to define the human -- I can absolutely see that. Of course it's a transparently obvious spin job as far as framing this particular issue goes, but the argument being (insincerely) proffered is the opposite of the conclusion you drew. IMHO.

Santorum's a moron, but that particular comment is, somehow, not moronic. He must have a better speechwriter these days, or it was just an accident.

Iorny, not racism (See Kepler's post for the lengthy answer.)

Are you insinuating that Santorum used nuance? That's unbelievable. You realize that's a nasty, French, word don't you?
Some Republicans might prefer being called racists. :p
