Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

For crying out loud....

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann, one of the most conservative members of Congress and founder of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, will deliver an alternative response to President Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 25th, her office confirmed Friday.

The speech, which will be broadcast online and sponsored by Tea Party Express, a California-based political action committee, will compete with the Republican’s official response by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget

fired? I think.

Based on what? If he was fired he wouldn't have been allowed to sign off. Instead, they said this

"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors," NBC Universal said in a statement.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

That or he was a (relatively) huge expense that simply didn't get the ratings. Perhaps they'll get someone similar to a left-leaning Joe Scarborough. I'd watch that just like I love watching Morning Joe when I get the chance.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Exactly. In fact, from a conservative perspective, the country would be far worse off. I doubt the Tea Party gets created if McCain is president, and I bet Pelosi is still Speaker of the House as well.

It's been said that you don't get Reagan if not for Carter's election in '76.

The similar may or may not hold true in 2012, but I wouldn't bet on it. We had both houses and the White House occupied by the same party two times now in the last ten years. We changed that quickly this last time, and did with a slightly more gradual process last time. If President Obama loses re-election, expect the Senate to remain a Democrat majority.

For the record, prior to the primaries concluding in 2008, I was saying that no matter who won the Presidential election that year, we'd have a one-term president. I didn't expect Congress to swing the way it did this November, so I might have to eat crow on my other prediction. We'll see.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

that's media speak for fired.

It is? When they fire you do they generally let you sign off?

The contract wasn't renewed. Speculation I'm seeing is that this is because of the Comcast buyout of NBC. Either Comcast didn't want him or Olbermann didn't want to work for Comcast (or both). I doubt he was fired and then allowed to go back on the air.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Countdown with Keith Olbermann cancelled?

Sounds like he was fired with the Comcast takeover. Whatever you think of him, I don't get that move from a business perspective. I doubt they're going to find someone who gets bigger numbers than he does doing that type of show with that type of bent.

Either way, there are now some possibilities out there that are pretty dang awesome.

For instance, can you say White House Press Secretary Keith Olbermann?

Or a primary challenge to Obama in 2012?

Additionally, Lawrence O'Donnell will now take Olbermann's spot. Which means there's now a self-proclaimed socialist in the prime MSNBC evening slot. So there's that.

What does comcast have against olbermann?

I have no idea.

I don't think he was fired because he had low ratings. His show consistently had the highest ratings on MSNBC, with Rachel Maddow right behind. The ratings for everything else (including Ed, Hardball and Morning Joe) are abysmal; and the daytime "news" is unwatchable. High School A/V productions have more polish.

We might well have got Reagan in '80 anyway, as Ford was termed out.

With the Democrats defending roughly 22 Senate seats, I would have to think that an Obama loss in 2012 means that they could easily lose the Senate, especially as close at the Senate is today.

And I thought the same thing you did re: the 2008 election. We're overdue for a one-and-done.

Personally, I like O'Donnell. He doesn't bullsh*t you one bit. From the dozen or so times I've seen him, here's my assessment: He brings intelligence to the discussion. He's an unabashed socialist that doesn't rely heavily on demeaning his opposition like Maddow, Olbermann, or Weiner. He actually brings facts and a cogent argument to the table instead of, "ZOMFG REPUBES ARE STOOPID!!!" In that respect, he kind of reminds me of Wellstone.

So, has Murrow's grave stopped spinning?

I haven't seen him enough to have an opinion one way or another. Just think it's an interesting fact.

Edit: Now seeing a report saying Comcast had nothing to do with it after all. Maybe he truly did want to try something new.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

fired.
the clues : MSNBC "ended" his contract. (not the other way around) Olbermann all but said so with his rif on "Network". they let him know today. when the star goes willingly its a long good bye (see King, Larry and Philbin, Regis)
he's violated network rules several times and is notoriously hard to work with. he's also highly paid. hard to justify with his ratings.
Comcast may have let it be known they'd like him gone when they take over. so technically it was NBC's decision. have seen this happen many many times in station deals. let the seller take the heat.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Olbermann signed off for the last time on his "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" political affairs program on Friday night.

"This is the last edition of "Countdown," Olbermann said on the program.

"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract," the network said in a statement. It did not elaborate.

His departure came just over two months after MSNBC briefly suspended Olbermann for giving money to three Democratic politicians, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was coincidentally shot and wounded in an assassination attempt on January 8 in Tucson, Arizona.

"MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors," the network statement said.

Olbermann's program helped define MSNBC as a liberal voice in cable television and a counterpoint to Fox News' largely conservative bent. MSNBC is now second in cable news ratings behind Fox News and ahead of CNN.

Comcast Corp earlier this week won approval from the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice for its combination with NBC Universal, the company behind MSNBC. Once the deal closes, Comcast will acquire a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal from General Electric Co.
