Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

I just don't see the impetus for either change to occur.

The only thing I think can and should be done regarding the third-party advertisements is a requirement for full disclosure of funding sources. I'm not aware of any requirement that freedom of speech be freedom of anonymous speech.

It's not going to change. Hit squads like the Swiftboaters are just too attractive to campaigns. They get all the benefit without any of the blowback. And the thugs themselves make out like bandits. How many times did the Swifties actually have to pay to run their garbage? Once? After that, it was free media coverage and a few sweet months of fame whoredom. Win-win.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

It would become a matter of campaign integrity. The candidate would request that the PACs either tone down their campaigns or outright admonish them.

Yeah, yeah, I know, guys. It was the wish-list for the next Congress, if we actually had statesmen anymore.

Does that mean we've given up on the current Congress after one week?

"Statesmen" are always something from history. During their own time, people thought Lincoln and Churchill were just politicians down in the mud struggling to recover an onside kick.

We'll see who emerges as a "statesman" with 50 years to think about it and shake the partisan inanities out of the way. My bet is that post-mass media and post-universal franchise, all ages will produce the same relatively low ratio of statesmen to hacks.

I never really had any hope. What I expect to see is one party make a push for something and then the other party block it (and it will go both ways). Actually, that is my greatest hope. We'll likely see the president moderate his rhetoric, much like President Clinton did after the Dems took a beating in 94, but I don't think it will be to the same degree because unlike in 94 the Repubs didn't take the Senate.

Obama spent 2 years moderating his rhetoric and all it got him was the predictable beat down at the polls you always get when you don't clearly and emphatically defend your political values. If he got any more "moderate" he'd be indistinguishable from the bums we threw out in '08.

All I want's a clear choice. Let Obama be who he ran as, let the other side muster whatever freakazoids can survive their primaries, and may the better side win.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

I don't think President Obama got elected on his campaign promises. I think he got elected on what the news showed of his campaign. IMO, they didn't go after his statements the way we've seen in prior elections. Then Senator Obama never lied during his campaign - he was wrong a lot, but never lied. The news media just went along with it because they didn't like McCain. Does anyone else remember the bru-haha that came about when a couple reporters started doing some critical investigations of his campaign? They got shut out. There was even a memo of not attacking "our guy."

Mind you, with exception to healthcare legislation, I don't think a McCain presidency would have gone much differently than President Obama's has thus far. So really it's all for naught.

I would say that if the press was bias Obama...its because on paper he was on paper he was a better candidate for a few reasons:

Age
Not really part of the Washington establishment (at least conservatives seem to value this)
Palin

But by and large, your assessment is spot on.

And he wasn't a Republican. Seriously, I think Dukakis probably could've won in 2008 simply because he would have had a (D) after his name. The GOP was f'ed 3 years ago because the economy was in the tank and they were the status quo at that point. 2012 will once again come down to the economy. If it's fairing even moderately better, Obama easily wins re-election.

Actually, I gave up on them in November. Not enough turn over to make any change in the status quo.

I'm sure the Echo Chamber will churn up some sort of "shocking revelation" that the rest of us will see as obvious electioneering but the 3/8ths, including their mouthpieces here, will be led by the nose over. I don't think it could be stupider than "death panels," but these people never disappoint.

We'll see what happens economically. It's pretty hard to blow re-election unless the Arabs deal you an oil shock or you mis-time your war.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.

"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.

The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday called Bentley's remarks shocking.

"His comments are not only offensive, but also raise serious questions as to whether non-Christians can expect to receive equal treatment during his tenure as governor," said Bill Nigut, the ADL's regional director.

"If the Holy Spirit lives in you that makes you my brothers and sisters. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus, I want to be your brothers and sisters, too," Bentley said.

Does Obama have the same policy with his Muslin brothers and sisters?

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

See, all this could have been solved if Lincoln had just let the south go.

Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Who cares if I'm his " brother or sister" anyway. You going to lose sleep tonight over his comments?

You could make that argument about anything. Who cares there was a shooting in Arizona? I'm not losing any sleep over that either.

Nice, one is about his religous beliefs and the other someone commited murder. Did his words kill you? or anyone else for that matter? I'll bet a majority of people in Alabama feel the same way he does.

Yeah, about that. I'll bet a majority of people in Alabama feel that atheists shouldn't be allowed to teach in public schools.
