Stupak overplayed his hand, badly. He put himself in a position of being pro-reform but also anti-abortion. He turned the rhetoric up so much and got boxed in by declaring the Senate bill's language unacceptable. He was not quiet about this at all, thus any compromise on his part would hurt, big time.
He made a very public tactical mistake. I'm still surprised he's not running, however.
What makes you say that? I may not be from the UP, but up until this healthcare hullabaloo, I know that Stupak was highly respected by a majority of his constituents, winning by 65%+ landslides in many re-elections. He originally ran on a platform of fighting for healthcare reform, so why is it suddenly a surprise and "betrayal" that he worked to get the recent bill passed?
